The important health benefits of pomegranate fruit is Attributable to its high concentration of polyphenolic compounds. This compounds concentration is likely to be affected by cultivar, environment and development stage of fruits. In this study, some physic-chemical characteristics along with minerals (K, Ca, Mg, and Fe) were determined in fruit during maturation stages every 20 day from 30 to 150 day-old fruit of two pomegranate accessions ‘Helo Erbin’(AE) and ‘Lafan Al-Hesn’ (AH) grown in Syria. The highest percentage of aril and juice and lowest percentage of peel were observed in 150-day-old fruit.

The antioxidant activity of pomegranate juices extracted by two methods was determined using three methods: β- carotene, Linoleic acid emulsion, and DiPhenel Picryl Hydrazyl (DPPH). The juice was extracted by separation arils from fruits and squee zed using Cyclone machine (T-1), while the second extraction method included squeezing the whole halve fruit with previous machine, (T-2). The potential compounds were determined using ethanol in a comparison with Butylated hydroxyl Anisole (BHA) as reference antioxidant. There were significant differences (P<0.05) in the antioxidant activity between the treatments in all measuring methods. The means of antioxidant activity amounted to 82.66% in T-1, 86.82% in T-2 and 86.98% in BHA. There was significant relationship between total phenols and antioxidant activity in all treatments.
Essential oils from peels of 6 citrus species were extracted. The species were lemon (Citrus limon), orange (C. sinensis), grapefruit (C. paradisi), pomelo (C. maxima), mandarin (C. reticulata) and bitter lemon (C. aurantium) using hydro-distillat ion (Clevenger type). In general Gram-positive bacteria were more sensitive to the oil extracts tested than Gram-negative bacteria, and P. aeruginosa was the most sensitive within the Gram-negative group.
During the season of 2002, samples of olive fruit were taken (Ashrasi type) from Ninavah horticulture’s station that belongs to the ministry of agriculture in Iraq. The purpose of this research is to study some physical and chemical characteristic s during the growing period, from July until October. Those characteristics include moisture, ash, oil content, chlorophyll A & B, protein, pH and carbohydrate, In addition to fruit length, size, weight, radius, and rigidity. The results showed significant increase in moisture, oil, weight, size and length of the fruit were studied. Significant reduction was noticed in the percentages of the protein, carbohydrate, ash and the fruit rigidity. The highest values of chlorophyll were observed during The month of September. October considered as the best time to harvest olive fruits for pickle purpose.
This study was investigated at the laboratories of Horticultural department, Faculty of Agriculture, Damascus University to measure the changes in oxidative and antioxidative parameters during tomato fruit growth. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipi d peroxidation (MDA) contents were analysed as indicators of oxidative processes. Results showed that H2O2 content decreased during fruit growth phase and slightly increased during ripening, meanwhile MDA content was found to increase only at the end of fruit ripening. The activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, APX, CAT) were modified during fruit growth. Activities of SOD, APX increased during fruit growth phase, meanwhile CAT activity increased during fruit maturation. The level of ascorbate increased during fruit growth. These changes in antioxidant metabolites and enzymes establish that the antioxidant system plays an important role in the both phases of tomato fruit growth.
Changes in precipitation patterns are considered one of most important hazards facing terrestrial ecosystems and water resources worldwide. Monthly rainfall data for six meteorological stations located in the Syrian coastal region were used to study changes in precipitation characteristics during the period 1960-2010. Trends with mann- Kendall Test, Gamma Distribution and Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI) were applied to detect changes in seasonal and annual precipitation amount in addition to seasonality. Results showed significant negative trends in annual precipitation in all stations up to 30% in some cases, which could be related to the decrease in spring and winter rainfall amounts that ranged between 38.5% to 50.2% in spring and 14% to 38% in winter. Despite significant decrease in annual precipitation, there were no significant trends in seasonality. These changes in precipitation patterns would pose big challenges to water resources management , agricultural production and forests management.
