Understanding narrative text requires capturing characters' motivations, goals, and mental states. This paper proposes an Entity-based Narrative Graph (ENG) to model the internal- states of characters in a story. We explicitly model entities, their i nteractions and the context in which they appear, and learn rich representations for them. We experiment with different task-adaptive pre-training objectives, in-domain training, and symbolic inference to capture dependencies between different decisions in the output space. We evaluate our model on two narrative understanding tasks: predicting character mental states, and desire fulfillment, and conduct a qualitative analysis.
Given the current social distancing regulations across the world, social media has become the primary mode of communication for most people. This has isolated millions suffering from mental illnesses who are unable to receive assistance in person. Th ey have increasingly turned to online platforms to express themselves and to look for guidance in dealing with their illnesses. Keeping this in mind, we propose a solution to classify mental illness posts on social media thereby enabling users to seek appropriate help. In this work, we classify five prominent kinds of mental illnesses- depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD and PTSD by analyzing unstructured user data on Reddit. In addition, we share a new high-quality dataset1 to drive research on this topic. The dataset consists of the title and post texts from 17159 posts and 13 subreddits each associated with one of the five mental illnesses listed above or a None class indicating the absence of any mental illness. Our model is trained on Reddit data but is easily extensible to other social media platforms as well as demonstrated in our results. We believe that our work is the first multi-class model that uses a Transformer based architecture such as RoBERTa to analyze people's emotions and psychology. We also demonstrate how we stress test our model using behavioral testing. Our dataset is publicly available and we encourage researchers to utilize this to advance research in this arena. We hope that this work contributes to the public health system by automating some of the detection process and alerting relevant authorities about users that need immediate help.
With mental health as a problem domain in NLP, the bulk of contemporary literature revolves around building better mental illness prediction models. The research focusing on the identification of discussion clusters in online mental health communitie s has been relatively limited. Moreover, as the underlying methodologies used in these studies mainly conform to the traditional machine learning models and statistical methods, the scope for introducing contextualized word representations for topic and theme extraction from online mental health communities remains open. Thus, in this research, we propose topic-infused deep contextualized representations, a novel data representation technique that uses autoencoders to combine deep contextual embeddings with topical information, generating robust representations for text clustering. Investigating the Reddit discourse on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD), we elicit the thematic clusters representing the latent topics and themes discussed in the r/ptsd and r/CPTSD subreddits. Furthermore, we also present a qualitative analysis and characterization of each cluster, unraveling the prevalent discourse themes.
This study aims at recognizing the differences in some skills of emotional expression from teachers’ and parents’ perspectives between the simple mentally retardation pupils integrated in first stage in basic learning and those who are nonintegrate d. The population consisted of 20 pupils of simple mentally retardation (8-12 years) integrated in public schools in first stage in basic learning, and 20 peer pupils in private centers. Whereas the teachers were selected (15 male/female) in public schools and (10 male/female) in private centers. Parents (80 )are the fathers and mothers of (20) pupils in public schools and (20) pupils in private centers. The study used the descriptive approach by designing a questionnaire to measure the differences in some skills of emotional expression between the simple mentally retardation pupils who are integrated in public schools and nonintegrated pupils who are in private centers. This questionnaire was distributed to teachers and parents. Then the data were analyzed statistically by SPSS. The results were as follows: - There are statistically significant differences between integrated and nonintegrated pupils on all dimensions of the scale for the sake of integrated pupils. - There are statistically significant differences between the means of some skills of emotional expressions (joy, love) according to the variable of gender for the sake of females. - There are statistically significant differences in (anger)for the sake of males.
The purpose of this study was to determine the level of Learning Orientation and Mental Focus for students of Tishreen University. This study also aimed at investigating affection of many variables on students` Learning Orientation and Mental Focus such as instructional strategies, gender and specialization. Sample consisted of (672) students from Tishreen University in academic year (2016-2017). The Results Of This Study Showed:  The most preferred strategies by students are interactive Strategies; (57.4%) of students prefer to learn by using of interactive strategies.  Students of Tishreen University have a very good level of Learning Orientation (77.46%) and Acceptable level of Mental Focus (57.98%).  There is no a statistical difference between students` mean scores on scale of Learning Orientation contributed to gender variable, but There is a statistical difference between students` mean scores on scale of Mental Focus contributed to gender variable. This difference is in favor of males.  Learning Orientation are affected by Instructional Strategies; the students who prefer interactive strategies have mental focus more than students who prefer show strategies. The study recommended to continue in investigating for variables that increase with Learning Orientation and Mental Focus.
The aim of the research has aimed to identify the extent of the implementation of the strategy of mental maps in English teachers in Damascus governorate. In addition, it has aimed to identify the differences between the average grades of teachers in the application of the strategy of mental maps according to the variables (type of education and qualification). The survey has been applied on the second cycle of Basic Education in ( 2016-2017) . As for the study sample , it included (62) teachers , they have been chosen randomly .The researcher has followed the discriptive analytical approach in her survey and she has used the questionnaire as a means to achieve the objectives of the research after it was tested for its vadility and reliability. The questinnaire of mental maps has been applied to them , which is prepared by the researcher . -The research concluded the following results: - Implementation of the strategy of mental maps of English teachers in the schools of the second cycle of basic education was a medium degree. - There are statistically significant differences between the average grade of English teachers in the second cycle schools of the basic education level on the extent to which mental maps are applied according to the type of education variable in favor of special education. - There are statistically significant differences between the average grade of English teachers in the second cycle schools of the basic education level on the extent of applying mental maps strategy according to the variable of scientific qualification for teachers with the highest qualifications.
The purpose of the research is to identify the degree of employment of teachers of the first cycle of basic education of mental habits in teaching English language, as well as knowledge of the differences in the employment of these habits according to the variables of the academic qualification and the number of years of teaching experience. The sample consisted of (303) teachers and teachers The first cycle of basic education was chosen randomly by the cluster of schools in the first cycle of basic education in Damascus Governorate. They were asked to identify the teachers' use of mental habits in the teaching of the English language by the researcher after verifying its validity and stability. The results indicate that there is a low degree of teachers in the use of mental habits when teaching the English language on the total score of the scale and in all mental habits except the habits of listening comprehension and sympathy, and control of arrogance, thinking about thinking, and finding humor that was a medium. The results showed that there were statistically significant differences between the average teachers on the scale of the use of mental habits in teaching English language according to the variable of scientific qualification for teachers with diploma and postgraduate qualifications. And the existence of statistically significant differences between the average teachers on the scale of the use of mental habits in the teaching of the English language according to the variable years of experience for teachers with (5) years of teaching experience and more except areas (thinking and communicating clearly and accuracy / mutual thinking / risk responsibility) The absence of differences between the members of the research sample according to the variable number of years of experience in these fields.
