Laboratory experiment was conducted in the laboratories of field crops department, Faculty of Agriculture, Damascus University, during the year 2011, in order to screen some lentils genotypes to osmotic stress at seedling stage.
Different experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions, at the Faculty of Agriculture – Damascus University, in order to develop a suitable and efficient screening tool, which can be applied to assess the genetic variability among 20 sor ghum genotypes (Izraa series) for high salt stress tolerance. We were able to develop a screening technique involves pre- exposing sorghum seedlings to a sub – lethal level of salinity stress (induction stress) (150 mM NaCl) for 16 hrs which can induce the genotypes to prepare defensive means, which may differ according to the genetic potentiality of each genotype. These protective responses may help the genotype to endure the lethal level of salinity stress (400 mM NaCl) for 48 hrs. At a later stage, the seedlings were transferred to distilled water for 72 hrs and the rate of recovery growth was taken as a criterion to select the highly salt tolerant genotypes by using Zdistribution analysis. Results revealed that genotypes such as: Izraa 10, Izraa 15, and Izraa 18 could be classified as salt tolerant genotypes which showed higher recovery growth and the least growth reduction over the control. Whereas a genotype such as Izraa 22 was grouped as salt sensitive one where the percent growth reduction over the control was greater, indicating that this genotype has low recovery growth ability. Our results suggest that the proposed screening technique is rapid, effective, and match the natural screening.
In this study, five barley cultivars (Arabi Abiad, improved Arabi Abiad, Arabi Aswad, Furat 1, Furat 2) from the harvest of 1999 season were used .The chemical composition, Amino acid content, B-Glucan content, viscosity, cell wall compounds, and metabolic energy were determined in two laboratories in Germany .A metabolism trial was also conducted to study the nitrogen balance, dry matter, Organic matter, ash, and some other productivity parameters. Results showed that the influence of barley varieties on chemical composition of the grains was clearly visible. The crude protein content ranged from 138 for Furat 1 to 169 gr/Kg dry matter for Arabi Abiad. The difference in starch content resulted in differences in metabolic energy Values from 12.4 for Furat 1 to 13.3 MJ/Kg dry matter for Arabi Aswad. The food assimilation trial showed that the varieties Arabi Aswad gave the best productivity parameters, and the crude protein content did not adversely affect the nitrogen balance in all the barley varieties meald, but it was the lowest for the Arabi Aswad variety meal (p <0.05). There were no significant differences in dry matter and organic matter digestibility for diets containing Arabi Abiad, Furat 1 and Furat 2.
This study was carried out at the Faculty of Agriculture, Damascus University, and ACSAD during the year 2001 – 2002 in order to assess the genetic variability of twenty wheat genotypes for osmotic stress tolerance by using PEG-6000 as a water str ess induced tool. This trial aimed to develop a semi-natural rapid and effective screening technique in which the optimum induction as well as lethal levels of osmotic stress are well defined . The results revealed that the treatments –0.4 MPa and –1.5 MPa were the optimum induction and lethal levels of osmotic stress, respectively.
This research was conducted at Izraa research station of The General Commission for Scientific Agricultural Research during the growing season 2010/2011 to study the performance of six durum wheat varieties at early growth stage under water defici t stress. The experiment was designed using randomized complete block design with three replication. The statistical analysis results of the experiment clearly showed genetic variations among cultivars under water stress. Drought stress caused a depression in all studied traits. Mean yield decreased in average 31.7 %. The number of spiks/ m2 was the most trait affected by drought stress, It decreased in average 29.1% while biological yield decreased in average 24.26%. It was observed that the number of spikes per m2 was the highest in the variety Hourani (191) and the highest number of grain per spike (34.1) whereas the variety Bohouth7 and the variety hourani recorded the highest thousand grain weight (40.5 g). The statistical analysis results showed that the variety Cha5 a achieved the highest grain yield per m2 (239.4 g), whereas, the variety Bohouth7 recorded the lowest grain yield per m2 (182.8 g), under water deficit stress conditions.
