The research was carried out in Nawa area in Daraa governorate during the year 2012, to study the response of four sesame genotypes (Local Idleb, Zouri, Improved Hourani and Brown Sudani) to four irrigation treatments (rainfed cultivation, one supplemental irrigation during branches formation, two supplemental irrigations during branche and capsules formation and three supplemental irrigations during branches formation, capsules formation and seed filling stages). A hydroponic culture experiment was conducted under the green house conditions, at the general commission of scientific agricultural research, and the faculty of agriculture, Damascus university, during the year 2002-003. The objectives of this in vestigation concentrated on the influence of four salinity levels (0-50-100-150 mM NaCl) on some physiological parameters of eight sorghum genotypes. The experiment was designed in a RCB design with three replications.
A laboratory experiment was conducted during 2002-003. The purpose was to develop an effective and rapid screening tool to assess the genetic variability for the response of some local barley varieties to polyethylene glycol- induced osmotic stres s at early growth stage. Also this will help to evaluate the relevance of pre-exposure of barley seedlings to sub-lethal (induction) levels of osmotic stress. This might enhance the capacity of seedlings to tolerate the lethal levels of stress.
This study was conducted in a pot experiment during 2012-2013 to investigate the response of four Syrian bread wheat cultivars (Sham 4, Sham 6, Bohouth 4, and Bohouth 6) to increasing levels of nitrogen fertilization (0, 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200 k g N/h). Nitrogen was added in two equal split applications, half was added as urea (46% N) at sowing, and the second half was added as ammonium nitrate (33.5 % N) at tillerring and stem elongation stage. Some growth and productivity parameters were investigated. Nitrogen application led in all four cultivars to significant increase in number of tillers, productive on the expense of non-productive tillers. This was accompanied by a significant increase in number of spikes on plant and number and weight of grain in the spike. Sham 6 had a higher number of productive tillers at nitrogen rate of application 200 kg N/h, whereas Bohouth 4 had a greater height for main stems and tillers compared to other cultivars. Grain productivity increased with the first level of nitrogen application (40 kg N/h) by a rate of 53, 57, 55, and 48 % for cultivars Sham 4, Sham 6, Bohouth 4, and Bohouth 6, respectively. Grain yield reached with nitrogen application of 200 kg N/h to 15.89, 15.96, 13.6, and 15.7 ton/h, respectively. Cultivars differed significantly in grain yield within each nitrogen application level. Grain yield for Bohouth 6 got closer to Sham 4 and Sham 6 with nitrogen application reaching 160 kg N/h, and after which became not significantly different, while grain yield of Bohouth 4 remains significantly lower compared to all cultivars.
The research was carried out at a field in Talkalakh region- Al smeka village in Western Area-Homs Province . The research objectives to study the effect of water stress conditions on tow hybrids of Zea mayes L. ( Basel1 and Basel2) during differe nt phonological stages(seedling, vegetative growth, flowering, physiological maturity) and control (no water stress) . We were able to develop a screening technique involves pre- exposing sorghum seedlings to a sub – lethal level of salinity stress (induction stress) (150 mM NaCl) for 16 hrs which can induce the genotypes to prepare defensive means, which may differ according to the genetic potentiality of each genotype. These protective responses may help the genotype to endure the lethal level of salinity stress (400 mM NaCl) for 48 hrs. At a later stage, the seedlings were transferred to distilled water for 72 hrs and the rate of recovery growth was taken as a criterion to select the highly salt tolerant genotypes by using Zdistribution analysis. Results revealed that genotypes such as: Izraa 10, Izraa 15, and Izraa 18 could be classified as salt tolerant genotypes which showed higher recovery growth and the least growth reduction over the control. Whereas a genotype such as Izraa 22 was grouped as salt sensitive one where the percent growth reduction over the control was greater, indicating that this genotype has low recovery growth ability. Our results suggest that the proposed screening technique is rapid, effective, and match the natural screening.
