The problem of this study is focused on how environmental issues are presented in Syrian newspapers due to the importance of the environment, the variety of dangers it involves and how journalism deals with it. This study aims at knowing to what extent Syrian newspapers are interested in the environmental issue and how they introduce it. This study answers a number of questions: What is the number, the nature, the focus, the quality and the quantity of the topics which are concerned with the environmental issue in the studied newspapers (Albaath, Althawra, and Teshreen). These newspapers were selected for many reasons: They are the oldest Syrian newspapers which are still published, and they constitute the main base of Syrian newspapers. A sample was drawn randomly from these newspapers during the first six months of 2008 by the use of the regular industrial week method.

This research examines the impact of physical environmental Uncertainty on the environmental management accounting (EMA) adoption level. Specifically, it aims at defining the relationship among the government's environmental policy, environmental resources and services used by the organization, environmental products, markets and demand, green competition, environmental technology in the industry, the behavior of environmental stakeholders in the organization, and how major environmental issues are affecting the organization concerning EMA adoption among manufacturing companies in Syria. Drawing from the contingency theory, the research seeks to identify the extent to which physical environmental uncertainty influences EMA adoption level. Hypotheses were constructed based on a direct proportion relationship between the physical environmental uncertainty and EMA adoption level. A total of 68 managers working in 20 Syrian manufacturing companies participated in the survey. Physical environmental uncertainty was tested against the EMA adoption level via simple regression analysis and correlation. The findings indicated that there is a direct proportion relationship between the physical environmental uncertainty and the EMA adoption level. The findings were discussed, and some recommendations and suggestions were provided.

Drought is one of the most important challenges facing sustainable development in eastern Mediterranean regions, where water resources are already limited and ecosystems are fragile. Sums of weighted standardized monthly precipitation anomalies were used to assess annual drought intensity, frequency and spatial extent in five climatic stations located in Syrian coastal region during the period 1966-2008.Changes in drought intensity were detected using trends with Mann – Kendall test. Results show that drought occurs with high frequency over all parts of the coastal region(up to 35% in some parts),but with different intensities.Extreme drought can hit all regions in some years as happened in 1972-1973. Moreover drought may strike the same region for three consecutive years (1988-1991). Also the results show an increasing tendency in drought intensityrelated to the decreasein drought index values (between 0.29-0.96). This can have serious ecological and economic consequences and will pose an increasing challenge to agriculture and the management of water resources in this region.
