يدرس هذا البحث تأثر الجاحظ في كتابه " الحيوان بحكايات كليلة و دمنة لابن المقفع, و يشتمل على فكرة أساسية تمثلت في تطور القص على ألسنة الحيوانات التي ابتدأها ابن المقفع, فالحكاية الخرافية التي تحمل مغزى اجتماعيا أو خلقيا تعليميا, تطورت عند الجاحظ لتؤسس نسقاً من التفكير الأسطوري الذي تجلى في كتاب الحيوان, بلغ على يده مرحلة جديدة من الترميز, إذ حاول الجاحظ تأسيس فكر أسطوري, و تكمن أهمية الموضوع في دراسته, جانباً مهماً في الأدب القصصي الخرافي الذي أسسه ابن المقفع, و وظف فيه تقنيات سردية عدة, أدرك قيمتها فقدمها في صيغ جديدة و قوالب فنية تخدم غاياته و مقاصده, و يعد كتاب كليلة و دمنة من أهم كتب التراث, و تكمن قيمته في كونه كتاباً أدبياً تعليمياً, يلتقي فيه فن السياسة و السلطة, بالأدب الاجتماعي التعليمي, و يحمل مغزى خلقياً و اجتماعياً, و مواعظ و حكماً إنسانية تصلح لكل زمان و مكان, و كان له أثر كبير في المؤلفات العربية السردية التي جاءت بعده, و في كل مرحلة زمنية كان هناك شكل للتأثر بالكتاب, إما تقليداً و محاكاة و إما نظماً و تأليفاً, أو تأسيساً لأنماط جديدة تستخدم معظمها الإطار الفني الذي استخدمه ابن المقفع في الحكايات, و توظف تقنيات الكتاب السردية التي كان له الفضل في تثبتها لتمسي صدى يهتدي بها من جاء بها من جاء بعده.
