We present a method for automatic query expansion for cross-lingual information retrieval in the medical domain. The method employs machine translation of source-language queries into a document language and linear regression to predict the retriev al performance for each translated query when expanded with a candidate term. Candidate terms (in the document language) come from multiple sources: query translation hypotheses obtained from the machine translation system, Wikipedia articles and PubMed abstracts. Query expansion is applied only when the model predicts a score for a candidate term that exceeds a tuned threshold which allows to expand queries with strongly related terms only. Our experiments are conducted using the CLEF eHealth 2013--2015 test collection and show %seven source languages and also in the monolingual case. The results show significant improvements in both cross-lingual and monolingual settings.
There are many methods and suggestions proposed to improve the efficiency of search in order to catch up with the increasing speed of information boom on the web. Most of these proposals are concentrated on term frequency and page rank algorithms a nd yet very few of them focus on semantic relationship of content. The objective of this research project is to provide a semantic relationship model that can be used for semi-structured or unstructured information on the web to help improve the accuracy and efficiency of search engine.

This research highlights the vital role of Pavement Management Systems integrated with Geographic Information Systems in planning and managing road maintenance in Lattakia, and getting a flexible local system by following a new method in processing a nd viewing information that supports maintenance decision. This study included applying a pilot project for managing pavement maintenance over a group of roads following The General Establishment for Road Communications. Those roads were divided to links and segments then evaluated using the " Asphalt Institute Method ", which gave us a numeric pointer that led in turn to the type of maintenance needed for a particular pavement. In this research, we depended on the Geographic Information Systems to design and build a comprehensive database, that reflected the present condition of the studied roads, and enabled us to store, analyze and document pavement surface condition and link it to the digitized maps of the studied roads. This guaranteed easy and direct access to various kinds of data and solutions as every segment appeared in a different color reflecting its conditions according to the theme of the map. By doing so, we could support the process of taking right maintenance decisions.
