تعرض تعليم علوم المكتبات و المعلومات لتغيير و إعادة تنظيم أساسي خلال العقدين الماضيين، حيث تحول منهج المكتبات التنقليدي إلى مهنة معلوماتية ذات دراسات جامعية في المرحلة الأولى و حتى مرحلة الدراسات العليا و حتى الدكتوراه. فضلاً عن تغيير في المقررات و المناهج و قبول الطلاب، و قد كان لسوق العمل و دخول تكنولوجيا المعلومات و الاتصالات تأثيره الواضح في الأفكار و المفاهيم التقليدية للمكتبات و قد أصبحت دراسات المكتبات و المعلومات أكثر استقراراً في الجامعات. و هذه الدراسات تعتمد على البحث و تستجيب للمتطلبات الأكاديمية الجامعية علاوةً على اهتمامها بالمهارات و التخصصات المطلوبة لسوق العمل. هذا و يقوم قسم المكتبات و المعلومات بجامعة دمشق بوضع المقررات و تطويرها لتتماشى مع التطورات المتسارعة في هذا المجال و بما يواكب تطور المناهج في الجامعات الغربية.
Teaching library and information science has been under pressure in the last decades to shift and reorganize the fundamental approach to the traditional library profession to an information technology studies in the first phase and postgraduate levels. The impact of the labour market and the introduction of ICT was clear to the ideas and concepts of traditional libraries and library studies to become more stable at universities. Such studies rely on research and respond to the requirements of university academic interests in addition to the skills and disciplines required for the labour market. Libraries and Information Department at Damascus University keeps developing the curriculum to be compatible with the rapid developments in this area.
