The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether a relationship exists between bilirubin, RDW, and prognostic factors for gastric cancer (tumor stage - tumor markers). Methods: The study included 112 individuals admitted to Tishreen University Hospital and the Oncology Center in Latakia during the period between July 2018 and December 2019. They were distributed into two groups as follow: the group of gastric cancer patients included 56 patients (33 males and 23 females) between the ages of 37 and 83 years, and the control group included 56 individuals (34 males and 22 females) between the ages of 37 and 80 years. The stage of gastric cancer was evaluated based on the AJCC (American Joint Committee on Cancer) cancer staging system. Patients were interrogated, and social and behavioral information were obtained, then venous blood samples were obtained for biomedical evaluation. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 25 software. Results: Bilirubin and RDW were significantly associated with the prognostic factors of gastric cancer. RDW was positively associated with the tumor stage and tumor markers (CEA and CA19-9). Total bilirubin (TBIL) and indirect bilirubin (IBIL) were negatively associated with these factors, while direct bilirubin (DBIL) showed no significant association. Patients with gastric cancer had higher RDW than healthy controls, while total bilirubin (TBIL) and indirect bilirubin (IBIL) were significantly decreased. The results of our study indicate that both RDW and bilirubin could be potential prognostic factor for gastric cancer.

Research summary

The majority of patients with SCD receive transfusions at some point in their life. Transfusion can be simple transfusion or exchange transfusions which offer better control of blood volume and viscosity. Such transfusions are most readily accompli shed via automated red cell exchange. Evaluate the results of our experience in applying the technique of selective cell separation by continuous flow (Cytapheresis) for automated red cell exchange for patients with sickle cell anemia to reduce the level of hemoglobin S (HbS) in certain cases, especially in preparation for major surgery.
Background& Objective: Prosthodontists always do their best in order to make dentures that fulfill all the functional and esthetic requirements of the patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between patients’ satisfaction with traditional complete dentures and clinical measures of denture quality, which include clinical assessment of retention, stability, support, occlusion, esthetics and speech. Materials & Methods: 104 patients participated in our study (65 males, 39 females). The range of their ages was (40 – 78) years (median=60.9). Traditional complete dentures were made for all these patients, and then they were followed for 4-6 weeks. After that, a questionnaire was filled for each patient. This questionnaire includes questions about patient satisfaction and assessment of the new denture. The clinical measures of quality of the denture were also assessed by a prosthodontist. Results: The results of this study showed that there was a poor significant relationship between patients’ rating of the retention of their dentures and the clinical measures of retention, stabililty and support (r<0.04). At each of the surveyed situations, the patient considered their dentures better than the examiner did (P<0.05). There was also a poor, significant relationship between the accuracy of reproduction of centric relation and the patient ability to masticate with his denture(r=0.27). Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that clinical measures of denture quality affect the retention of the denture as perceived by the patient. They also affect the comfort of the patient during mastication. For that, the dentist must always do his best to make dentures with enhanced quality. On the other hand, clinical measures of quality are not the only factor that affects the patient satisfaction with denture.

Our study aimed to evaluate the relation between platelet lymphocyte ratio and to correlate this ratio with the clinicopathological characteristics of non-metastatic colorectal cancer patients. We enrolled 95 non-metastatic colorectal patients at Oncology Depatment at Tishreen University Hospital. Our results revealed that there were statistically significant differences in the higher mean of lymphocyte platelets ratio by the stage of the tumor (p<0.0001), by the size of the tumor (p=0.001), and by the metastases of the lymph nodes (p=0.03), as the mean increases with the tumor stage with the size of the tumor and the formation of metastases in the lymph nodes. While there were no statistically significant differences in the higher mean of lymphocyte platelets by the histological grade of tumor (p = 0.1), as well as by the tumor location in the left and right colon (p= 0.3). These results reflect the correlation of the high percentage of lymphocyte platelets with the histopathological clinical characteristics that indicate a poor prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer
This study aimed to assessing the relationship between locus of control and depression among breast cancer patients. The study was carried out in the chemical and radiational treatment center in Tishreen University Hospital – Latakia, Data collecte d from15/12/2015 to 15/2/2016.The sample comprised of 100 breast cancer patients. Three tools was been used, the first tool (Demographic and Clinical Data Sheet) was been filling by the researcher, then all patients which participated in the study was asked to answer on the second tool (Rotter's Locus of control Scale) and the third tool (Beck Inventory Scale II). This study found that there was significant statistical relation between locus of controltype and depression degree among breast cancer patients, more than half of breast cancer patients was had depression, and was had external locus of control. So it is recommended study theeffect of training program to modify locus of control type on the incidence average of depression among breast cancer patients.
