The aim of the research was to clarify the pre-processing steps required for satellite images before starting to analyze and extract data from them using the ENVI program. Radiometric and topographic correction applied to the Landsat image 2017, and then we calculated the NDVI index for this image before and after applying pre-processing. The results showed a difference in the spectral values of the image before and after the radiometric correction, especially in near infrared band. The reflection values were recorded in the original image between (40-50) and (300-3500) in the corrected image. The difference in the reflection values after the topographical correction was also visible on the near- infrared and infrared bands, especially in the points where shadows of the terrain. Differences in the values of NDVI for 2017 were observed before and after the application of pre-processing on the image, especially in points of good and very good vegetation coverage with high values of the index. The study concluded that it is important to follow the minimum number of steps required for preprocessing steps in order to avoid unnecessary steps and recommend well tested, readily available, and adequately documented data approaches and data products.

Estimation of tree and stand volume is a key calculation for productive forest management (de Miguel et al., 2012). A precise estimation of tree volume needs to take the variation in bole forms into account while calculation, this can be done by es timating tree form factor. This study aims to construct a mathematical model to calculate the form factor of brutia pine trees grown in the regions of Rabiaa in northern Latakia. The form factor model can help foresters to precisely estimate the volume of tree and forest stands. During the period 2008-2011, 72 pine trees of various ages and sizes, located in natural stands of different densities and site qualities, were felled. Diameters at different heights of the felled trees were measured; trees volumes and volumes of equivalent cylinders were calculated, and consequently the values of tree form factor were computed. The dataset was randomly split into two parts, 75% (55 trees) of the data for constructing form factor model and 25% (17 trees) for model validation. A form factor model was obtained using the non-linear regression equations in the statistical program SPSS. Value of the coefficient of determination adjusted (R²adj) was about 0.81. The model has been validated using several statistical methods, the relative bias ( e%) was ca. 17.9%, while the value of model accuracy ) % x m ) was 22.9 %. In order to obtain lower value of model relative bias and higher value of accuracy it’s recommended to use a larger database comprising all distribution areas of pine in Syria.
Climate change is the major global challenge facing water resources managers because of its impacts on many life fields beginning with agriculture activities to economic - social regions. In this study, drought in the eastern north of Syria have be en investigated (Hasake, Rakka, DerAzzor, Bokmal, Kameshli) using a set of data containing precipitation data for period from 2000 to 2010, and MODIS time series images for the same period. This study assure that 2008/2009 described as drought period in the study area, and the NDVI maps ,which we have, give us an idea about the vegetation status and patterns in the study area. The study clearly show that NDVI and rainfall was found to be highly correlated in Rakka with P- Value= 0.003; and medium correlated in the other stations with P- Value > 0.05. Results of this study verify needing to use this index (NDVI), along with precipitation data, in drought monitoring in the eastern north region of Syria. So that,. It would help managers in making decisions to face drought in this area.
The aim of this research was to investigate the changes of vegetation and regeneration of plant species in Kassab forests after 1991 fire. The study area is located in the North western part of Syria in the middle of Al-Baier and Al- Bassit forest s to the North of Latakia. Thirty five plant surveys (Relevé) were carried out in the study area during 2009 according to Braun-Blanquet method included the burned area and the nearby locations of non-burned forest. By comparing the plant surveys (Relevé), results showed good regeneration of most plant species that were in the study area before the fire. Three forms of vegetation were distinguished in the study area: 1 - The areas where dominance is shared between Pinus brutia Ten. and Quercus cerris L. subsp. pseudocerris (Boiss.) Chalabi. 2 - Areas dominated by Pinus brutia Ten. with accompanying species from Eu-Mediterranean zone and supra Mediterranean zone. 3 – Areas where Pinus brutia Ten. and Quercus cerris L. subsp. pseudocerris (Boiss.) Chalabi are partly or completely absent, and dominated by shrubs and grass species.
This study was analyzed the temporal variation of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of natural stands of cedrus libani in the northern humid part and eastern exposure of the Syrian coastal mountains (Slenfeh, Jawbat Burghal), and its correlation with climatic variables (temperature and precipitation) during the period of 2004-2014. We examined the interannual and seasonal variation in NDVI values of Cedrus stands, and accumulative effects of climatic variables (temperature and precipitation) on stands using simple linear regression and correlation (Pearson). The NDVI values of Cedrus libani stands showed significant increase in Slenfeh and Jawbat Burghal (0.006, 0.004 /year) respectively. We found that the annual mean NDVI was significantly correlated with annual mean precipitation in Jawbat Burghal (R = 0.689).The significant increase trend of seasonal mean NDVI was in Slenfeh summer and Jawbat Burghal winter (R = 0.638, R = 0.724) respectively. The results showed, there were accumulative effects of temperature on Cedrus libani in Slenfeh and Jawbat Burghal in autumn and winter, while the accumulative effects of precipitation in autumn and summer were noted.
A lot of research directed its concern to the reliability of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) used in various applications, especially in early detection of forest fires to ensure the reliability of warning alarms sent by sensors and reduce the aver age of false warnings. In this research we have tried to evaluate the reliability of WSN used in early detection of fires in Fir and cedar preserve, mainly. By designing hybrid WSN network, similar to the terrains of the preserve and modeling it using program Opnet14.5. We have studied several scenarios, to allow increasing malfunction of the network resulting from fire break out and spreading: starting in allowance of 0% and comparing its results the results of mathematical equations of reliability according to the same scenarios. In addition, we have calculated the final availability through suggesting a mechanism to improve WSN reliability using the redundancy, i.e add sensitive spare nodes, which replace the damaged ones as the result of fire. The results have proved the remarkable increasing of reliability. Also, it has been predicted of the reliability of the network designed according to reliability of different values of the nodes used by using one of the reliability devices "the Block Diagram".
