Research summary
Critical review

This research was conducted to detect the morphological and molecular differences between golden henbane (Hyoscyamus aureus L) collected from south Syria. Seeds were collected from six locations, then sterilized and grown In Vitro. Grown plants we re described for some morphological characters. The molecular characterization was carried out using the method of Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) to detect genetic variations. The plants showed significant (p<0.01) morphological differences among studied locations, Plant height ranged from 14.97 to 18.97 cm and stem color ranged from red to green. Trichome density also ranged between medium, high and very high. Furthermore, significant differences in leaves dimensions were observed according to the plant geographical location. The main root length ranged from 6.09 to 8.37 cm. Molecular analysis by ISSR produced a total of 56 bands, 49 of which were polymorphic (87.5%), resulted from using 11 non-specific primers. A genetic distance dendrogram was drawn. based on the results of genetic characterization of plant from different locations. The plants collected from Salkhad separated with a genetic distance of 0.312 while the plants collected from other locations were grouped together, at the same time, they were divided into two sub groups, the first group comprised plants collected from Qalamoun and Dimas regions with a genetic distance of 0.032, whereas sub group II content Bosra plants which separated clearly from those of Dara' dam and Wadi Al-Zaidi by a genetic distance of 0.017, These results may indicate a relationship between genetic characters of this plant species with geographic distribution.
The antibacterial activity of Inula viscosa L. leaves extracts against some pathogenic bacteria, which were isolated from Al-Assad hospital laboratory in Lattakia, was tested by disc diffusion method. Results showed that water extracts had antibacte rial activity against all Gram positive and negative bacteria. The diameters of inhibition zones were between 9 mm against Pseudomonas aeroginosa and 41 mm against Proteus vulgaris. All Gram positive bacteria showed sensitivity to all organic extracts, so they had antibacterial activity, while Gram negative bacteria showed resistance to chloroform extract except for the one of Klebsiella pneumoniae with an inhibition zone of 12 mm, and resistance for dichlormethan extract except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa with an inhibition zone of 15 mm. there was resistance for diethyl extract except for Serratia marcescens with an inhibition zone of 32 mm. Ethyl acetate extract had antibacterial activity against all bacteria. Ethanol, methanol and acetone extracts showed antibacterial activity against all bacteria except for Escherichia coli with an inhibition zone of 10 mm. This study indicated that water and organic Inula viscosa L. leaves extracts had antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria which also was tested, especially water extract, ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate and hexane extracts. So the Inula viscosa L. leaves extracts may be sources for natural antibiotic in future.
The antimicrobial activity of aqueous extract of Zingiber Officinalis were tested for their antifungal activity against the following dermatophytes :Candida albicans, Cladosporium cladosporiosis , Cryptococcus neuphormans, Trichophyton violaceum a nd against other four bacteria : E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes. The extract used in traditional medicine for the treatment of nausea was tested in vitro through the Agar Disk Diffusion Method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of extracts determined by the Agar dilution method ranged from 1.5 to 12.5 mcg. The most sensitive microorganisms to the extract were Candida albicans with MIC 1.5 and E coli with MIC 1.5 mcg.
In October 2014, the collected air-green samples of Basil herb were gathered from the region of MashtaAlhulu in the ,Then the volatile oil from fresh samples was extracted with N-Hexane and other samples with steam distilled water, and we have found the percentage of the volatile oil in the first sample (N-Hexane) is 2,7% , and 2,5% in the second sample (steam distilled water). Suitable conditions were chosen to separate the components of the volatile oil by GC-MS and we noticed : - the first sample (extracted with N-hexane) contain 18 compounds, and they are: Six Terpenes compounds and they form 21.22%,Hydrocarbon compounds form 21.8% from the total weight and they are 7 compounds, and one compound from Ketone class dicycle and its percentage is 2.32%,and two Ester compound and they form 18.96%, One phenolic compound and forms 21.60%, one Ether compound and forms 14.08%. -the volatile oil from the second sample (extracted with steam distilled water) contains 11 compounds, and they are: 6 compounds belong to Hydrocarbon class and they are the main components in the volatile oil with a 91.24% of the oil total weight, One compoundfrom Ether class forms 1.62%, one phenolic compound which forms 3.93%, and three Terpenes compounds and they form 3.17%.
We aimed in this study to evaluate the effectiveness of Syrian propolis on some bacterial strains isolated from Al-Assad hospital in Latakia, to estimate its antimicrobial activity. Thus, we studied two propolis samples from two regions in the Syrian coast, and prepared ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) with different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%, and 20%). Then we tested these extracts on four strains of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Acinetobacter baumannii), using pore method on Muller Hinton Agar. As we observed, the bacteria showed diverse susceptibility to the extracts and the most susceptible bacterium was Staphylococcus aureus which was sensitive to all concentrations and especially for EEP 20%. However, the least affected bacteria were E. coli and Pseudomonas, as the 0.5% and 1% EEP had no efficacy. On the other hand, there were little differences in antimicrobial activity between the two samples of propolis.
