تُعد عادة مضغ القات متجذرة في المجتمع اليمني و لها العديد من الآثار
السلبية في أجهزة الجسم المختلفة. إن انتشار عادة مضغ القات تتعدى الرجال البالغين إلى النساء و الأطفال في المجتمع اليمني مؤشر خطير بحاجة إلى لفت الاهتمام. يعد الكاثينون و الكاثين مركبي القات القلويين الأساسيين لإحداث آثاره المنبهة، و توجد العديد من المركبات الأخرى يعزى إليها بعض آثار القات غير المنبهة مثل مركبات التانين المتهمة بارتفاع حالات سرطان المرئ و المعدة و الفم.
الهدف من البحث: تقييم أثر مضغ القات المزمن في المخاطية الفموية سريرياً، و معرفة دور التدخين في ذلك.
Khat chewing is a deep-rooted habit in Yemen. It has many
negative impacts on different body systems. The spread of khat chewing
among adult males in Yemeni society needs special attention. Cathinone
and cathine are the most stimulants of khat ingredients. Other ingredients
could have other implication such as gastrointestinal carcinogenic tannins.

effects on oral mucosa and the role of concurrent smoking.

Chewing Qat is a common habit in the Yemen society.
Various studies demonstrated clear effects of this habit on the
Yemen society, in general, and the systemic organs of the
human body in particular. The absence of studies about the
effects of chewing Qat on teeth, supporting tissues, and oral
mucosa was the major motive for this study.
