The results of Tissue-blot immunobinding assay (TBIA) of 754 samples of cowpea seeds collected from various regions in Lattakia province has showed the transmission of Pea seed borne mosaic virus (PSbMV) among five virus studied (CMV, BYMV, PSbMV, BBMV and AMV). Pea seed borne mosaic virus was detected on seeds collected from various locations in 24, 64% to 37, and 50%. This result is the first record of seed transmission of PSbMV in cowpea seeds.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of seed Rhizobia-treating and Cowpea severe mosaic virus (CPSMV) inoculation on bacterial nodulation and nitrogen fixation in cowpea. CPSMV was isolated from infected plants, College of Agriculture, Abu-Ghraib, Baghdad, IRAQ, the Rhizobia was isolated from nodules on roots of cowpea plants. The plants were inoculated by the virus 2 weeks after germinations. Nodules on roots of Rhizobia-treated plants were formed while no nodules were observed on non-treated ones. The mean number of nodules was 24.93\ plant on virus inoculated plants compared to 59.86 nodules\plant on non-inoculated ones. Significant reduction in nodules weight was induced by the virus, 0.62 gm on the virus inoculated plants compared to 2.13gm on non-inoculated ones. It has been found that the Rhizobia induced significant increase in nitrogen percentage at p=0.05 in the foliage, 1.29% in plants non-treated with Rhizobia non-inoculated by the virus compared with 2.502% in Rhizobia treated-virus inoculated plants and 2.550% in Rhizobia treated non inoculated plants. The virus caused an increase in nitrogen percentage, 1.877% compared to 1.29% in non-inoculated plants. The Rhizobia caused an increase in pods number\plant, seed number\plant, and seed dry weight (gm)\plant, 25.6, 114, 32.4 compared to 12.8, 70.6, 8.7 in non-treated plants respectively. The treatment of virus inoculated plant by Rhizobia induced a significant increase in these values, except with nitrogen percentage in seeds, 16.4, 84.6, 10.4, 4.3 respectively.
The experiment was conducted at the vegetable research farm, Depart.of Hort. and Forst. Resea., Nenivah during the growing season of ١٩٩٤ and ١٩٩٥. The objective of the research was to investigate the effect of plant spacing (١٠, ٢٠, ٣٠ cm) and phosphorus fertilizer (٠, ٢٥, ٥٠, ٧٥ kg.P٢O٥/donum),on yield and other related traits of Cowpeas.
Afield survey of ckickpea chlorotic stunt virus (CPCSV) was conducted in some plantation areas in Lattakia province. A total of 252 samples were collected from plants showing chlorotic and stunting symptoms from 54 field. Results of Tissue Blot Immun obonding Assay has shown the presence of CPCSV in some plantation areas. The percentage of CPCSV varied in samples collected from fields, the highest percentage was 33.33% in Ras-elain aria and the lowest was 7.69% in Elbourjan aria.
Formaldehyde is classified by the World Health Organization (International Agency for Research on Cancer) as a carcinogen in Group 1. The upper limit allowed for use in cosmetic products as a preservative has to not exceed 0.2%. This study aims to detect and determine formaldehyde level in some cosmetic products available in the local market using acetyl acetone method. Formaldehyde was detected in 77% of the studied cosmetic products (49 samples) despite the fact that most of them were not labeled formaldehyde or formaldehyde donor preservatives (about 70%). The amount of formaldehyde in keratin samples were higher than the allowed limit (0.34% -11.73%) except one sample 0.18%. pH decrease and temperature increase of keratin samples led to an increase of formaldehyde level as a result of its release from preservatives.
A field survey of Pepper mild mottle (PMMV) and Cucumber mosaic (CMV) Viruses was conducted in some plantation areas in Tartous and Lattakia Provinces. A total of 1278 samples (782 from Tartous and 505 from Lattakia) were collected. Results of Tis sue Blot Immunobinding Assay showed the presence of PMMV in 0.39% and CMV in 11.42% in the collected samples. The percentage of CMV varied in Tartous and Lattakia Provinces. In this study, PMMV was not recorded in Lattakia, whereas it was recorded in Tartous in a small percentage (0.64%). Using Tissue Blot Immunobinding Assay, the collected seeds from the infected pepper fruits from Tartous fields showed the transmission of PPMV throughseeds in a ratio of 0.70% to 0.87% according to seed resources, whereas CMV was transmitted in a high percentage of 2.81% to 7.98% according to seed resources. PPMV was not recorded in leaf samples or in seeds taken from Blozah District in TartousProvince.
