"كاد" من أفعال المقاربة، و دلالتها التي لا تفارقها هي مقاربة حصول الفعل و وقوعه، دون أن يكون قد وقع بالفعل، و لهذا لا يجوز دخول حرف الاستقبال عليها، و ذلك لمنافاة حرف الاستقبال لدلالتها. و لهذا السبب وجب أن يكون خبرها فعلاً مضارعاً، لأن المضارع فيه دلالة على الحال أو ما يقاربه، و لهذا أيضاً تجرد هذا الفعل في الغالب من (أن) لأن (أن) تخلص الفعل للاستقبال و تباعده عن الحال. و هذا على عكس (عسى) التي يجب أن يقترن خبرها ب (أن) لأن (عسى) تدل على المستقبل. فشدة القرب من حدوث الفعل أو التراخي في حصوله ، هما الفيصل في وجوب اقتران الخبر ب (أن) من عدمه.
