The study included 184 patients with type 2 diabetes referred to the specialist clinic or admitted in the sections of Al-Assad University Hospital in Damascus during the years 2012-2013. The patients were divided into three groups: Group A: a group of patients with diabetes is not treated with Metformin, 72 patients (39,1%). Group B: a group of patients with diabetes is treated with Metformin for more than 18 months, 72 patients (39,1%). Group C: a group of patients with diabetes is treated with Metformin for less than 6 months, 40 patients (21,8%). This study showed that 43,5% of the patients have Vit B12 deficiency: 32,6% of patients with diabetes treated with Metformin compared with 10,9% non treated with Metformin. The patients who were treated with Metformin (112 patients) were divided by dose intake and then depending on the duration of treatment into two groups for each category and shown an inverse correlation between duration and dose of therapy with metformin and levels of Vit B12. We also found that despite the increased risk of Vit B12 deficiency in patients with diabetes treated with Metformin but this was not associated with the occurrence of symptoms such as megaloplastic anemia and neurological symptoms.
The study included 200cases of apparently healthy adults attending hospitals of Damascus University, medical students, nurses and graduated doctors, whose aged over 18 years and of both genders during 2015, were excluded 11 cases of diagnosed diabe tes, 35 cases of anemia, so the cases were 154. The study showed that the prevalence of prediabetes was 14,9%, and the prevalence on females was higher that on males (9,1% versus 5,8% respectively). While the prevalence of IFG was 9,1%, and mostly with the age group 38-47 year. The most risk factors in our study were obesity, central obesity,hypertriglyceridemia and high blood pressure. The study also showed high fasting insulin levels and increased insulin resistance in patients with IFG, and showed a moderate positive linear correlation between fasting blood glucose and insulin resistance. It also appeared that it could not determine if the insulin resistance is the cause or result, but the patient enters in defective circle.

Many studies showed that hypovitaminosis D is common worldwide, especially in the neighboring countries. The aim of this study is to determine serum concentrations of 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 in healthy Syrians, since vitamin D status in Syria is unknown.
To determine the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in a sample of apparently healthy people. Cross-sectional study of 382 apparently healthy people attending Al-Assad University Hospital clinics in Damascus (not as patients). Anthropometry (hei ght, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure), fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and high density lipoprotein were examined for all the participants, and then the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was determined according to International Diabetes Federation and National Cholesterol Education Program / Adult Treatment Panel 3 definitions.

The aim of this study is to collect more information about Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in Syria due to it being one of the most common causes of preventable mental retardation if detected at early stage and treatment is preventable, and to the absence of any published statistics regarding it in our country, and to emphasize on the necessity of applying a mandatory newborn screening program for early diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism to improvement of child’s life, by investigating the adequacy of the clinical determination the physician's experience to get an early diagnosis.
