Parvovirus B19 infects children and adults, causing erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), polyarthritis, aplastic crisis and chronic anemia in patients with hematological or immunological disorders, and fetal hydrops or fetal death. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of B19 IgM in Damascus patients with thalassemia major..

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of hypogonadism among β-Thalassemia Major (β-TM) adolescent patients, and the role of iron chelation therapy (ICT) in its prevention. Data was collected from 60 β-TM patients and 35 controls aged 1 3─ 30 years through a questionnaire and a review of medical history to collect sociodemographic characteristics, transfusion regimen, chelating history and pubertal status. Complete blood count, serum ferritin, and pituitary-gonadal function tests were analyzed 1–2 weeks after blood transfusion. Logistic regression, independent t-test, and chi-square test were used to analyze our results and the significance was tested at p≤ 0.05. The overall prevalence of hypogonadism among β-TM patients was 75%, the mean of serum ferritin was 6704.83± 2849 ng/ml and all patients had serum ferritin above 2000 ng/ml indicating a severe iron overload. Low hemoglobin level (p=0.006), high ferritin level (p=0.018), high blood transfusion per year (24-blood transfusions) (p=0.007), and poor compliance to iron chelation therapy programs (p=0.001), were detected had significant partial effect in hypogonadism. In conclusion, hypogonadism is highly prevalent among Gaza strip β-TM patients. Its presence being associated with lower hemoglobin values, iron overload, high blood transfusion and low compliance of iron chelation therapy
The study aims to determine the Seroprevalence of anti-H. pylori antibodies in patients with peptic complaints using indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), and compare serology with histological examination of biopsies from upper gastrointestinal e ndoscopy to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of this assay. The Study sample included 120 participants divided into two groups: 69 patients with peptic complaints who underwent upper GI endoscopy in Al-Assad Hospital in Lattakia (average age 47 years old), and 51 volunteers without peptic complaints (average age 33 years old). The study was conducted in the period between February 2011 and March 2012. Indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) was used to study the seroprevalence of anti-H. pylori antibodies and fluorescence intensity in the two groups. The results showed that 63 of the patients group (91.3%) and 39 of volunteers (76.47%) are anti-H. pylori antibodies positive. The comparison of serology with histological examination of biopsies showed a sensitivity and specificity of 78% and 80% respectively in the presence of moderate and strong degree of fluorescence. The results reveal the importance of IFA as a non-invasive screening test besides the endoscopy, and the utility of this technique for the epidemiologic studies in a local setting.
Periodontal diseases are considered to be the most prevalent disease among population next to dental caries , they differ from other systemic diseases such as depression , cardiac diseases and diabetes in that they have clear causes and depend upo n person’s daily life style . The health knowledge can play an active role in prevention of oral disease while other diseases have complicating factors that health knowledge alone is insufficient to prevent its occurrence . This study aimed to determine the level of oral health knowledge among of Damascus university students.
Several studies and reports have indicated the prevalence of hepatitis D virus infection in many parts of the world at different rates , Ranging from areas of epidemiological and areas with a low prevalence of it. Till now there is no study in Syr ia shows us the prevalence of viruse Delta in chronic hepatitis B patients . The aim of our study was to determine the current prevalence of hepatitis D in chronic hepatitis B patients . And to take appropriate measures in dealing with these patients due to the increased risk of liver disease in the event of injury by it . 77 patients with chronic hepatitis B certainly proved with PCR analysis 25 women and 52 men visiting the center of hepatitis in Latakia were tested for antibody to hepatitis D virus (anti-HDV) by ELISA test . The results indicate a positive antibody in three patients (women and 2 men) and the prevalence was 3.8% , which point to a moderate prevalence of hepatitis D comparing with neighboring countries.
