This research studies some soil properties formed on calcareous rocks under a natural plant cover of wide leaves (mainly: Quercus calliprinos and Quercus infectoria) in Banias region (63 – 234) meters height above sea level. Firstly, 3 soil profiles in the studied area were done, then morphological characteristic, type of plant cover and Geographic Position System (GPS) were accomplished. Samples were taken from profile horizons, then, physical and chemical properties were determined (structure, bulk and real densities, total calcium carbonate percent, organic matter content, action exchange capacity, exchangeable calcium and magnesium, and pH). The profile depth ranged between low and medium (60 – 137) cm, the pH ranged between neutral and alkaline (7.1- 8.2), there was an increase in calcium carbonate content in the whole profile (17- 88%), and also increase of organic matter contents in the horizon (8- 12%). Due to high clay (18-74) % and organic matter content (8-12) %, the soils showed high cation exchange capacity (CEC) (21- 92 meq/100g). Exchangeable calcium was dominant on the surface of adsorption complex (17- 74 meq/100g), then magnesium in second stage (0.2- 6 meq/100g). From a classification point, the soils were classified under the following orders: Entisols, Mollisols, Inceptisols, which have profile types: A – AC – C, A – AR – R, and A – (B) – C. Soil depth and its content of rocky pieces were varied according to relief degree, plant cover intensity, and parent rocks hardness. Most of soil properties are a parent material descendible, and the soils were slightly developed and recently formed.

Palaeomagnetism and some magnetic and physical properties (magnetic susceptibility, intensity of remanent magnetization, ac current electrical conductivity and density) of 115 samples from 18 sites of the Yemen Volcanic Group TKY (Tertiary and (or ) Cretaceous) from igneous rock exposures from Sana’a region were studied. One palaeomagnetic pole position was determined and a magneto-strigraphy of the area was suggested. The different properties were measured in order to use them as characteristic factors in discriminating the neighboring igneous flows. The measurement of the in situ magnetic susceptibility of 80 points, distributed on 4 sub-areas, in the area helped to calculate the mean value of the magnetic susceptibility of each sub-area, which may be used in any magnetic interpretation of aeromagnetic or magnetic anomalies. Also, the density of 115 samples were measured and a mean value of the density of each sub-area and an overall mean density of each rock age, were calculated in order to be used in any future interpretation of any gravity anomaly in the area.
This research aimed to study some chemical characteristics of rainwater in the region located at the East of Baniyas area the coastal region of Syria . Baniyas area contain complex of industrial facilities including oil refinery, electrical power g eneration station and oil transportation. pH values, concentration of trace metals (Pb, Cu, and Cd) and major ions (Ca2+, Mg 2⁺, Na⁺, NH₄⁺, K⁺,SO₄2-, NO3⁻, Cl⁻, F⁻) were determined during the period from October 2012 to May 2013. Samples were collected from 15 sites differ in distances from the emissions sources. Most of samples have normal pH value. The pH values decreased while the concentration of SO₄2-, NO3⁻, and trace metals Pb, Cu, Cd increased significantly by getting closer to emission source up on 2500m. The changes of the chemical characteristics of rainwater were significant.
This study was conducted at the farm of agriculture college (Abu Jarash), Damascus university to determine the impact of time and depth of adding phosphorus on it's availability in calcareous soil cultivated with corn during 2011 and 2012 seasons. Super phosphorus fertilizer was added to the soil at three different depths (0, 10 and 20 cm), while the control spot left without fertilizer addition. Soil samples were taken for analysis of available phosphorus (P) from 12 replicates at different depths 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 cm with two samples for every depth at zero time, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 days during the growing corn. Results indicated that the available phosphorus increased directly in all samples after cultivation, with a marked value recorded at all depths after 15 days of cultivation. This concentration began decreasing gradually with a constant rate in time in all transactions and reached 50% after 90 days of cultivation. It was also observed that available phosphorus was higher at the two depths, 0-10 and 10-20 cm and after 15 days of post- corn cultivation and followed by zero time and it was found that the best concentration was observed at depth extended from 0 to 20 cm in the treatment of adding fertilizer at depth of 10 cm and time of sampling was 15 days of cultivation.
Palaeomagnetism and some magnetic and physical properties (magnetic susceptibility, intensity of the Natural Remnant Magnetization (NRM), ac current electrical conductivity and density) of 136 samples from 22 sites of the Yemen Volcanic Group TKY (Tertiary and (or) Cretaceous) from igneous rock exposures along the road from Sana’a – west towards Al-Hudyadah were studied. A single population consists of seven Virtual Geomagnetic Poles (VGP), of the Upper Oligocene, was accepted and a mean at 182.81° E, 77.44° N with α95= 12.5° was calculated. The different properties were measured in order to use these properties as characteristic factors to discriminate the neighboring igneous flows. The measurement of the in situ magnetic susceptibility of 140 points, distributed on 7 sub-areas, in the region helped to calculate the mean value of the magnetic susceptibility of each sub-area, which might be used in any magnetic interpretation of aeromagnetic or magnetic anomalies. Also, the density of 132 samples were measured and a mean value of the density of each sub-area was calculated in order to be used in any future interpretation of any gravity anomaly in the area.
This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of soils developed on volcanic ash in an area with a Mediterranean soil moisture regime to determine the presence or absence of amorphous minerals in these soils.
