This study was carried at Al Assad hospital, Lattakia. It is a retrospective study of uterine leiomyoma patients who had been accepted in the Department of Gynecology during the period between 1/6/2011 and 1/6/2013 . The study included 103 patients. We documented information for each patient: age, signs and symptoms, number of pregnancies and births, clinical and vaginal examination, ultrasound, blood tests: hemoglobin, hematocrit and red cell values, and the type of surgical treatment. The prevalence of uterine leiomyoma in this study was 5.1%. The most clinical manifestation of uterine leiomyoma was abnormal uterine bleeding (63.1 %). Hemoglobin was less than 12 g / dL at 59.22% of cases. Hematocrit was less than 36% at 57.28 % of cases. This confirms that uterine leiomyoma patients are at high risk of anemia, (we depended on cut off point of WHO for hemoglobin and hematocrit), and the anemia is by iron deficiency because the average values of red blood cells were less than normal. Myomectomy is the surgical option among young women who want to reproduce or maintain menstruation, while abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy are surgical options for older women or who have completed their reproductive life .

Research summary
Critical review

Aim: to assess the expression ofcathepsin B(ctsB; an important protease) in human breast cancer and correlate that with the tumor grade. Materials and Methods:Serial sections were obtained from 23 formalin-fixed paraffin embedded breast cancer tis sue specimens which were collected from Alasad University Hospital and a pathological laboratory in Lattakia - Syria. Tissues were stained for cathepsin B using immunohistochemistry. Tonsil tissues were also included as a positive control. Results:Positive cytoplasmic staining of CtsB was observed in both follicular macrophages and endothelial cells in tonsil sections. In breast cancer tissues, tumor cells, endothelial cells and stroma stained positive for CtsB. The presence of CtsB in blood endothelium significantly correlated with the tumor grade (p=0.049). Conclusion: These results supported the important role of cathepsin B in tumor progression, particularly in angiogenesis. Future studies should investigate the regulating mechanisms of cathepsin activities within the tumor environment, and that can be considered as new tagets for cancer treatment.
This research has included quarterly and periodically physical and chemical analysis of treatment wastewater in the Latakia countryside during year 2011 by testing three treatment plants similar in the mechanism of action and distributed in three v illages (Happit, Al-Harah, Marg Moairban). This study has included the measurement of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and determination of nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, and chloride. In this research, potentiometric using Selective Electrodes ISEs, the Visible Spectrum, and the Turbidimetry methods were used. The results showed significant differences in concentrations of the studied ions between one station to another. The highest nitrate concentrations (228.33mg/l) were recorded in Happit treatment plant especially in summer, and the highest phosphate concentrations (41.81mg/l) were in Happit treatment plant in summer. Whilst the highest sulfate concentrations which ranged between (508.67– 1157.33)mg/l were in Al-Harah treatment plant at all seasons. The highest chloride concentrations (310.33mg/l) recorded in Happit treatment plant in summer. The statistical study has demonstrated and showed high and sometimes low correlation coefficient R2 so that gives clear indications about the sources of pollution.
This research has included quarterly and periodically physical and chemical analysis of treatment wastewater in the rural areas of Latakia city during year 2011 by testing three treatment plants similar in the mechanism of action and distributed in three villages (Happit, Al-Harah, Marg Moairban). This study has included the measurement of temperature T, pH, and determination of sodium, potassium, calcium concentrations, and sodium adsorbed rate (SAR). This study was based on the potentiometrictechnic using Ion Selective Electrodes (ISEs). SAR measurements have shown that there are clear differences between autumn and other seasons, and between treatment plants. The highest values was in the Happit treatment plant in all seasons and the highest value was (88.25 mg/L) in the autumn which is much larger than the allowable limit. The highest concentrations of sodium ion were in the autumn in all treatment plants (1002.67-7130.33) mg/L, which is off limits. As for the potassium ion concentration was highest (72.46 mg/L) in Happit treatment plant in the autumn. While calcium ion concentrations in Al-Harah treatment plant was exceeded (670.33-800.00) mg/L the allowable limit in all seasons except the summer. The statistical study has demonstrated and showed strongand sometimes weak correlation coefficient R2 so that gives clear indications about the sources of pollution.
Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. In the developing countries, it is responsible for the death of about 125 000 women each year. In most cases 67-80% are caused by uterine atony. Uterine massage would re present a simple intervention with the potential to have a major effect on PPH and maternal mortality in under resourced settings. Aim: The aim of the present study is to study the effect of uterine massage on the immediate postpartum hemorrhage among primiparae. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted of al-Assad Hospital and Children & Obstetrics Hospital (Lattakia), a convent sample of 40 primiparae women. Checklist application form was used to assess the postpartum hemorrhage by hemoglobin and hematocrit measurement before applying uterine massage and after the end of procedure. Results: This study demonstrated that the rate of hemorrhage decreased in the experimental group, hemoglobin and hematocrit was higher (10.4 mg/dl, 32.3%) (P=0.029*) (P=0.015*) among primipara who received uterine massage. Conclusions and Recommendations: Our present study results advice to apply uterine massage for all women after labor and delivery because its effective in reducing blood loss. It is also recommended to learn nurses how to apply uterine massage.
This research was done as a collaboration work between Tishreen University and the General Commission for Scientific Agricultural Research in Karahta research station for improvement of Shami goats and Der Al-Hajar station to set tables for normal values of some blood and chemical parameters in Awassi sheep during pregnancy to predict any nutrition or health disorders. Forty seven Awassi ewes in the same age (in the third season) were used for that purpose. Blood sample were collected from all ewes every month of the pregnancy period. Thealanine aminotransferase (ALT),the aspartate aminotransferase (AST), the alkaline phosphatase (ALP), the glucose (Glu) were analyzed. Results indicated the existence of significant changes (P<0.05) between the increase and decrease in all indicators studied throughout The study period, which shows the change in functional status of liver in conjunction with stage of pregnancy. The overall average of the effectiveness of enzymes (2.05-26.47), (32.65-181.40) and (11.17-79.76) U/l for each of the ALP, ALT and AST, respectively, and total concentration of glucose (37,50-95.20 mg/dl) throughout the study period.
