An experiment was carried out using 120 unsexed chicks of a commercial broiler breed taken from a hatchery nearby the farm of the experiment. When the chicks started to hatch the chicks were collected without the need to complete the operation of hatching to ensure that the hatching chicks were hatched at the same time. The chicks were distributed into four groups of each group divid into 6 sub groups each sub group contains 5 chicks. The chicks were fed different diets.
Background& Objective: This research is carried out to investigate the Anti-inflammatory activity of the alcoholic extract of flower buds of Crataegus laevigata in experimentally-induced arthritis in rats. Materials & Methods: the inflammation was i nduced experimentally by Carrageenan, the standard material that causes non-immune acute inflammation. The size of edema was measured before and after the inducing the inflammation, in control group as well as in group treated by extract and by Diclofenac. The measurements persist until the 4th hour following the injection of Carrageenan. In another set of experiment, the important biomarker, TNF-α, was calibrated in inflammation-induced groups of rats that received extract or Diclofenac and compared with control. Results: The extract significantly reduced the size of edema compared with control and this effect was not less than that of Diclofenac, the standard anti-inflammatory drug. Indeed, the extract lowered the values of TNF-α. Conclusion: The Crataegus laevigata has clear anti-inflammatony effect , but it should be further investigated.
Seasonal changes effect on yield and quality of carrageenan from the Syrian marine alga Hypnea musciformis were studied during 1 year. The carrageenan yield varied from 31 to 46%. The maximum yield was recorded between April and September, while l ow carrageenant content was recorded in December. The gel strength of carrageenan was maximum in September (260 g/cm²) and minimum in March (90 g/cm²). The viscosity ranged from 22 to 44cP with a peak recorded in September. Seasonal variations were not observed in the gelling (42-50 C°) and melting (60-70 C°) temperatures of carrageenan. The results indicate that Hypnea musciformis can be considered a good sources for production of commercial carrageenan in future.
