We analytically study optical properties of several types of defects in Bragg multiple quantum well structures. We show that a single defect leads to two local polariton modes in the photonic band gap. These modes lead to peculiarities in reflection and transmission spectra. Detailed recommendations for experimental observation of the studied effects are given.

Based on a microscopic many-particle theory we study the amplification of polaritons in a multiple-quantum-well resonant photonic crystal. For the Bragg-spaced multiple quantum wells under investigation we predict that in a typical pump-probe setup f our-wave mixing processes can lead to an unstable energy transfer from the pump into the probe and the background-free four-wave mixing directions. We find that under certain excitation conditions this phase-conjugate oscillation induced instability can lead to a large amplification of the weak probe pulse.
Earlier we reported an observation at low temperatures of activation conductivity with small activation energies in strongly doped uncompensated layers of p-GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells. We attributed it to Anderson delocalization of electronic states i n the vicinity of the maximum of the narrow impurity band. A possibility of such delocalization at relatively small impurity concentration is related to the small width of the impurity band characterized by weak disorder. In this case the carriers were activated from the bandtail while its presence was related to weak background compensation. Here we study an effect of the extrinsic compensation and of the impurity concentration on this virtual Anderson transition. It was shown that an increase of compensation initially does not affect the Anderson transition, however at strong compensations the transition is suppressed due to increase of disorder. In its turn, an increase of the dopant concentration initially leads to a suppression of the transition due an increase of disorder, the latter resulting from a partial overlap of the Hubbard bands. However at larger concentration the conductivity becomes to be metallic due to Mott transition.
We report experimental studies of conductance and magnetoconductance of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well structures where both wells and barriers are doped by acceptor impurity Be. Temperature dependence of conductance demonstrate a non-monotonic behavior at temperatures around 100 K. At small temperatures (less than 10 K) we observed strong negative magnetoresistance at moderate magnetic field which crossed over to positive magnetoresistance at very strong magnetic fields and was completely suppressed with an increase of temperature. We ascribe these unusual features to effects of temperature and magnetic field on a degree of disorder. The temperature dependent disorder is related to charge redistribution between different localized states with an increase of temperature. The magnetic field dependent disorder is also related by charge redistribution between different centers, however in this case an important role is played by the doubly occupied states of the upper Hubbard band, their occupation being sensitive to magnetic field due to on-site spin correlations. The detailed theoretical model is present.
Multiple quantum beats of a system of the coherently excited quantum confined exciton states in a high-quality heterostructure with a wide InGaAs/GaAs quantum well are experimentally detected by the spectrally resolved pump-probe method for the first time. The beat signal is observed as at positive as at negative delays between the pump and probe pulses. A theoretical model is developed, which allows one to attribute the QBs at negative delay to the four-wave mixing (FWM) signal detected at the non-standard direction. The beat signal is strongly enhanced by the interference of the FWM wave with the polarization created by the probe pulse. At positive delay, the QBs are due to the mutual interference of the quantum confined exciton states. Several QB frequencies are observed in the experiments, which coincide with the interlevel spacings in the exciton system. The decay time for QBs is of order of several picoseconds at both the positive and negative delays. They are close to the relaxation time of exciton population that allows one to consider the exciton depopulation as the main mechanism of the coherence relaxation in the system under study.
Unlike random potentials, quasi-periodic modulation can induce localisation-delocalisation transitions in one dimension. In this article, we analyse the implications of this for symmetry breaking in the quasi-periodically modulated quantum Ising chai n. Although weak modulation is irrelevant, strong modulation induces new ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases which are fully localised and gapless. The quasi-periodic potential and localised excitations lead to quantum criticality that is intermediate to that of the clean and randomly disordered models with exponents of $ u=1^{+}$, and $zapprox 1.9$, $Delta_sigma approx 0.16$, $Delta_gammaapprox 0.63$ (up to logarithmic corrections). Technically, the clean Ising transition is destabilized by logarithmic wandering of the local reduced couplings. We conjecture that the wandering coefficient $w$ controls the universality class of the quasi-periodic transition and show its stability to smooth perturbations that preserve the quasi-periodic structure of the model.
