We explicitly compute the limiting slope gap distribution for saddle connections on any 2n-gon. Our calculations show that the slope gap distribution for a translation surface is not always unimodal, answering a question of Athreya. We also give linear lower and upper bounds for number of non-differentiability points as n grows. The latter result exhibits the first example of a non-trivial bound on an infinite family of translation surfaces and answers a question by Kumanduri-Wang.

Recall that two geodesics in a negatively curved surface $S$ are of the same type if their free homotopy classes differ by a homeomorphism of the surface. In this note we study the distribution in the unit tangent bundle of the geodesics of fixed typ e, proving that they are asymptotically equidistributed with respect to a certain measure $mathfrak{m}^S$ on $T^1S$. We study a few properties of this measure, showing for example that it distinguishes between hyperbolic surfaces.

In this paper we study smooth orientation-preserving free actions of the cyclic group $mathbb Z/m$ on a class of $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifolds, $sharp g (S^n times S^n)sharp Sigma$, where $Sigma$ is a homotopy $2n$-sphere. When $n=2$ we obtain a c lassification up to topological conjugation. When $n=3$ we obtain a classification up to smooth conjugation. When $n ge 4$ we obtain a classification up to smooth conjugation when the prime factors of $m$ are larger than a constant $C(n)$.

We prove the existence of Veech groups having a critical exponent strictly greater than any elementary Fuchsian group (i.e. $>frac{1}{2}$) but strictly smaller than any lattice (i.e. $<1$). More precisely, every affine covering of a primitive L-shape d Veech surface $X$ ramified over the singularity and a non-periodic connection point $Pin X$ has such a Veech group. Hubert and Schmidt showed that these Veech groups are infinitely generated and of the first kind. We use a result of Roblin and Tapie which connects the critical exponent of the Veech group of the covering with the Cheeger constant of the Schreier graph of $mathrm{SL}(X)/mathrm{Stab}_{mathrm{SL}(X)}(P)$. The main task is to show that the Cheeger constant is strictly positive, i.e. the graph is non-amenable. In this context, we introduce a measure of the complexity of connection points that helps to simplify the graph to a forest for which non-amenability can be seen easily.
Let $S$ be a compact, connected, oriented surface, possibly with boundary, of negative Euler characteristic. In this article we extend Lindenstrauss-Mirzakhanis and Hamenstadts classification of locally finite mapping class group invariant ergodic me asures on the space of measured laminations $mathcal{M}mathcal{L}(S)$ to the space of geodesic currents $mathcal{C}(S)$, and we discuss the homogeneous case. Moreover, we extend Lindenstrauss-Mirzakhanis classification of orbit closures to $mathcal{C}(S)$. Our argument relies on their results and on the decomposition of a current into a sum of three currents with isotopically disjoint supports: a measured lamination without closed leaves, a simple multi-curve and a current that binds its hull.
In this paper we analyze a two degree of freedom Hamiltonian system constructed from two planar Morse potentials. The resulting potential energy surface has two potential wells surrounded by an unbounded flat region containing no critical points. In addition, the model has an index one saddle between the potential wells. We study the dynamical mechanisms underlying transport between the two potential wells, with emphasis on the role of the flat region surrounding the wells. The model allows us to probe many of the features of the roaming mechanism whose reaction dynamics are of current interest in the chemistry community.
