We study the cohomological physics of fivebranes in type II and heterotic string theory. We give an interpretation of the one-loop term in type IIA, which involves the first and second Pontrjagin classes of spacetime, in terms of obstructions to having bundles with certain structure groups. Using a generalization of the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancelation in heterotic string theory which demands the target space to have a String structure, we observe that the magnetic dual version of the anomaly cancelation condition can be read as a higher analog of String structure, which we call Fivebrane structure. This involves lifts of orthogonal and unitary structures through higher connected covers which are not just 3- but even 7-connected. We discuss the topological obstructions to the existence of Fivebrane structures. The dual version of the anomaly cancelation points to a relation of String and Fivebrane structures under electric-magnetic duality.

In this paper we study the cohomology of (strict) Lie 2-groups. We obtain an explicit Bott-Shulman type map in the case of a Lie 2-group corresponding to the crossed module $Ato 1$. The cohomology of the Lie 2-groups corresponding to the universal cr ossed modules $Gto Aut(G)$ and $Gto Aut^+(G)$ is the abutment of a spectral sequence involving the cohomology of $GL(n,Z)$ and $SL(n,Z)$. When the dimension of the center of $G$ is less than 3, we compute explicitly these cohomology groups. We also compute the cohomology of the Lie 2-group corresponding to a crossed module $Gto H$ whose kernel is compact and cokernel is connected, simply connected and compact and apply the result to the string 2-group.

The concept of orbifolds should unify differential geometry with equivariant homotopy theory, so that orbifold cohomology should unify differential cohomology with proper equivariant cohomology theory. Despite the prominent role that orbifolds have c ome to play in mathematics and mathematical physics, especially in string theory, the formulation of a general theory of orbifolds reflecting this unification has remained an open problem. Here we present a natural theory argued to achieve this. We give both a general abstract axiomatization in higher topos theory, as well as concrete models for ordinary as well as for super-geometric and for higher-geometric orbifolds. Our first main result is a fully faithful embedding of the 2-category of orbifolds into a singular-cohesive infinity-topos whose intrinsic cohomology theory is proper globally equivariant differential generalized cohomology, subsuming traditional orbifold cohomology, Chen-Ruan cohomology, and orbifold K-theory. Our second main result is a general construction of orbifold etale cohomology which we show to naturally unify (i) tangentially twisted cohomology of smooth but curved spaces with (ii) RO-graded proper equivariant cohomology of flat but singular spaces. As a fundamental example we present J-twisted orbifold Cohomotopy theories with coefficients in shapes of generalized Tate spheres. According to Hypothesis H this includes the proper orbifold cohomology theory that controls non-perturbative string theory.
We construct a dynamical quantization for contact manifolds in terms of a flat connection acting on a Hilbert tractor bundle. We show that this contact quantization, which is independent of the choice of contact form, can be obtained by quantizing th e Reeb dynamics of an ambient strict contact manifold equivariantly with respect to an R+-action. The contact quantization further determines a certain contact tractor connection whose parallel sections determine a distinguished choice of Reeb dynamics and their quantization. This relationship relies on tractor constructions from parabolic geometries and mirrors the tight relationship between Einstein metrics and conformal geometries. Finally, we construct in detail the dynamical quantization of the unique tight contact structure on the 3-sphere, where the Holstein-Primakoff transformation makes a surprising appearance.
Geometric structures on manifolds became popular when Thurston used them in his work on the geometrization conjecture. They were studied by many people and they play an important role in higher Teichmuller theory. Geometric structures on a manifold a re closely related with representations of the fundamental group and with flat bundles. Higgs bundles can be very useful in describing flat bundles explicitly, via solutions of Hitchins equations. Baraglia has shown in his Ph.D. Thesis that Higgs bundles can also be used to construct geometric structures in some interesting cases. In this paper, we will explain the main ideas behind this theory and we will survey some recent results in this direction, which are joint work with Qiongling Li.
We give a detailed explicit computation of weights of Kontsevich graphs which arise from connection and curvature terms within the globalization picture for the special case of symplectic manifolds. We will show how the weights for the curvature grap hs can be explicitly expressed in terms of the hypergeometric function as well as by a much simpler formula combining it with the explicit expression for the weights of its underlined connection graphs. Moreover, we consider the case of a cotangent bundle, which will simplify the curvature expression significantly.
