To assess long-term structural integrity under operational conditions in nuclear reactors, SS 316LN with varying nitrogen content is subjected to thermal aging for 20000 hours at 650{deg}C. While the annealing twins and heterogeneous grain evolution by bimodal division are independent of chemical composition, the type, size and morphology of evolving secondary phases are characteristic for nitrogen concentration. Colour contrast in bright field optical microscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy reveals the presence of three major precipitate phases; M23(C, N)6, Fe2Mo intermetallics and Cr2N. Contiguously formed hetero-structures of Fe2Mo and Cr2N are quantified and extensive formation has been observed in steels with high nitrogen content (0.14 wt. % and 0.22 wt. %). A unique occurrence of morphological derivatives of intra-granular M23(C, N)6 precipitates with cube-on-cube orientation relationship such as (1) isolated cubes, (2) primary stringers/strings of cubes, (3) secondary stringers/clusters of branched primary strings, and (4) clusters of laths are identified. The stringers and laths are preferentially grown in{111}/<110>{gamma} and have crystallographic variants. The conclusions are drawn from bright field colour contrast optical micrographs in the present study demonstrate the potential of light optical microscopy to be used as a significant tool to efficiently and accurately process huge amount of data including the preferential growth planes/directions ({111}/<110>) of morphological derivatives of M23(C, N)6 precipitates, by analyzing the symmetry and dense planes/directions of secondary phases. Overall mechanical properties have been reformed by the precipitation strengthening effect arising from the excess nitrogen content.

New positive-parity states, having a band-like structure, were observed in 105Ru. The nucleus was produced in induced fission reaction and the prompt gamma-rays, emitted from the fragments, were detected by the EUROBALL III multi-detector array. The partial scheme of excited 105Ru levels is analyzed within the Triaxial-Rotor-plus-Particle approach.
The unique optoelectronic properties of black phosphorus (BP) have triggered great interest in its applications in areas not fulfilled by other layered materials (LMs). However, its poor stability (fast degradation, i.e. <<1 h for monolayers) under a mbient conditions restricts its practical application. We demonstrate here, by an experimental-theoretical approach, that the incorporation of nitrogen molecules (N2) into the BP structure results in a relevant improvement of its stability in air, up to 8 days without optical degradation signs. Our strategy involves the generation of defects (phosphorus vacancies) by electron-beam irradiation, followed by their healing with N2 molecules. As an additional route, N2 plasma treatment is presented as an alternative for large area application. Our first principles calculations elucidate the mechanisms involved in the nitrogen incorporation as well as on the stabilization of the modified BP, which corroborates with our experimental observations. This stabilization approach can be applied in the processing of BP, allowing for its use in environmentally stable van der Waals heterostructures with other LMs as well as in optoelectronic and wearable devices.
While being of persistent interest for the integration of lattice-matched laser devices with silicon circuits, the electronic structure of dilute nitride III/V-semiconductors has presented a challenge to ab initio computational approaches. The root o f this lies in the strong distortion N atoms exert on most host materials. Here, we resolve these issues by combining density functional theory calculations based on the meta-GGA functional presented by Tran and Blaha (TB09) with a supercell approach for the dilute nitride Ga(NAs). Exploring the requirements posed to supercells, we show that the distortion field of a single N atom must be allowed to decrease so far, that it does not overlap with its periodic images. This also prevents spurious electronic interactions between translational symmetric atoms, allowing to compute band gaps in very good agreement with experimentally derived reference values. These results open up the field of dilute nitride compound semiconductors to predictive ab initio calculations.

To develop silicon-based spintronic devices, we have explored high-quality ferromagnetic Fe$_{3}$Si/silicon (Si) structures. Using low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy at 130 $^circ$C, we realize epitaxial growth of ferromagnetic Fe$_{3}$Si layers on Si (111) with keeping an abrupt interface, and the grown Fe$_{3}$Si layer has the ordered $DO_{3}$ phase. Measurements of magnetic and electrical properties for the Fe$_{3}$Si/Si(111) yield a magnetic moment of ~ 3.16 $mu_{B}$/f.u. at room temperature and a rectifying Schottky-diode behavior with the ideality factor of ~ 1.08, respectively.

We report on detailed investigations of the electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic GaMnAs layers, which have been fabricated by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. Superconducting quantum interference device measurements reveal a dec rease of the Curie temperature from the surface to the GaMnAs/GaAs interface. While high resolution x-ray diffraction clearly shows a homogeneous Mn distribution, a pronounced decrease of the carrier concentration from the surface towards the GaMnAs/GaAs interface has been found by Raman spectroscopy as well as electrochemical capacitance-voltage profiling. The gradient in Curie temperature seems to be a general feature of GaMnAs layers grown at low-temperature. Possible explanations are discussed.
