The quantum Kibble-Zurek mechanism (QKZM) predicts universal dynamical behavior in the vicinity of quantum phase transitions (QPTs). It is now well understood for one-dimensional quantum matter. Higher-dimensional systems, however, remain a challenge, complicated by fundamental differences of the associated QPTs and their underlying conformal field theories. In this work, we take the first steps towards exploring the QKZM in two dimensions. We study the dynamical crossing of the QPT in the paradigmatic Ising model by a joint effort of modern state-of-the-art numerical methods. As a central result, we quantify universal QKZM behavior close to the QPT. However, upon traversing further into the ferromagnetic regime, we observe deviations from the QKZM prediction. We explain the observed behavior by proposing an {it extended QKZM} taking into account spectral information as well as phase ordering. Our work provides a starting point towards the exploration of dynamical universality in higher-dimensional quantum matter.

Recent experiments on a one-dimensional chain of trapped alkali atoms [arXiv:1707.04344] have observed a quantum transition associated with the onset of period-3 ordering of pumped Rydberg states. This spontaneous $mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry breaking is d escribed by a constrained model of hard-core bosons proposed by Fendley $et, ,al.$ [arXiv:cond-mat/0309438]. By symmetry arguments, the transition is expected to be in the universality class of the $mathbb{Z}_3$ chiral clock model with parameters preserving both time-reversal and spatial-inversion symmetries. We study the nature of the order-disorder transition in these models, and numerically calculate its critical exponents with exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group techniques. We use finite-size scaling to determine the dynamical critical exponent $z$ and the correlation length exponent $ u$. Our analysis presents the only known instance of a strongly-coupled transition between gapped states with $z e 1$, implying an underlying nonconformal critical field theory.
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated transverse field Ising (TFI) model on the checkerboard lattice (CL), which consists of N{e}el, collinear, quantum paramagnet and plaquette-valence bond solid (VBS) phases. We implement a numerical simulation that is based on the recently developed unconstrained tree tensor network (TTN) ansatz, which systematically improves the accuracy over the conventional methods as it exploits the internal gauge selections. At the highly frustrated region ($J_2=J_1$), we observe a second order phase transition from plaquette-VBS state to paramagnet phase at the critical magnetic field, $Gamma_{c}=0.28$, with the associated critical exponents $ u=1$ and $gammasimeq0.4$, which are obtained within the finite size scaling analysis on different lattice sizes $N=4times 4, 6times 6, 8times8$. The stability of plaquette-VBS phase at low magnetic fields is examined by spin-spin correlation function, which verifies the presence of plaquette-VBS at $J_2=J_1$ and rules out the existence of a N{e}el phase. In addition, our numerical results suggest that the transition from N{e}el (for $J_2<J_1$) to plaquette-VBS phase is a deconfined phase transition. Moreover, we introduce a mapping, which renders the low-energy effective theory of TFI on CL to be the same model on $J_1-J_2$ square lattice (SL). We show that the plaquette-VBS phase of the highly frustrated point $J_2=J_1$ on CL is mapped to the emergent string-VBS phase on SL at $J_2=0.5J_1$.
We investigate emergent quantum dynamics of the tilted Ising chain in the regime of a weak transverse field. Within the leading order perturbation theory, the Hilbert space is fragmented into exponentially many decoupled sectors. We find that the sec tor made of isolated magnons is integrable with dynamics being governed by a constrained version of the XXZ spin Hamiltonian. As a consequence, when initiated in this sector, the Ising chain exhibits ballistic transport on unexpectedly long times scales. We quantitatively describe its rich phenomenology employing exact integrable techniques such as Generalized Hydrodynamics. Finally, we initiate studies of integrability-breaking magnon clusters whose leading-order transport is activated by scattering with surrounding isolated magnons.

We investigate the quantum phase transition in the random transverse-field Ising model under the influence of Ohmic dissipation. To this end, we numerically implement a strong-disorder renormalization-group scheme. We find that Ohmic dissipation dest roys the quantum critical point and the associated quantum Griffiths phase by smearing. Our results quantitatively confirm a recent theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 100}, 240601 (2008)] of smeared quantum phase transitions.
Considering nonintegrable quantum Ising chains with exponentially decaying interactions, we present matrix product state results that establish a connection between low-energy quasiparticle excitations and the kind of nonanalyticities in the Loschmid t return rate. When domain walls in the spectrum of the quench Hamiltonian are energetically favored to be bound rather than freely propagating, anomalous cusps appear in the return rate regardless of the initial state. In the nearest-neighbor limit, domain walls are always freely propagating, and anomalous cusps never appear. As a consequence, our work illustrates that models in the same equilibrium universality class can still exhibit fundamentally distinct out-of-equilibrium criticality. Our results are accessible to current ultracold-atom and ion-trap experiments.
