Visual quality measures (VQMs) are designed to support analysts by automatically detecting and quantifying patterns in visualizations. We propose a new data-driven technique called ClustRank that allows to rank scatterplots according to visible grouping patterns. Our model first encodes scatterplots in the parametric space of a Gaussian Mixture Model, and then uses a classifier trained on human judgment data to estimate the perceptual complexity of grouping patterns. The numbers of initial mixture components and final combined groups determine the rank of the scatterplot. ClustRank improves on existing VQM techniques by mimicking human judgments on two-Gaussian cluster patterns and gives more accuracy when ranking general cluster patterns in scatterplots. We demonstrate its benefit by analyzing kinship data for genome-wide association studies, a domain in which experts rely on the visual analysis of large sets of scatterplots. We make the three benchmark datasets and the ClustRank VQM available for practical use and further improvements.

Scatterplots are used for a variety of visual analytics tasks, including cluster identification, and the visual encodings used on a scatterplot play a deciding role on the level of visual separation of clusters. For visualization designers, optimizin g the visual encodings is crucial to maximizing the clarity of data. This requires accurately modeling human perception of cluster separation, which remains challenging. We present a multi-stage user study focusing on four factors---distribution size of clusters, number of points, size of points, and opacity of points---that influence cluster identification in scatterplots. From these parameters, we have constructed two models, a distance-based model, and a density-based model, using the merge tree data structure from Topological Data Analysis. Our analysis demonstrates that these factors play an important role in the number of clusters perceived, and it verifies that the distance-based and density-based models can reasonably estimate the number of clusters a user observes. Finally, we demonstrate how these models can be used to optimize visual encodings on real-world data.
Scatterplots are frequently scaled to fit display areas in multi-view and multi-device data analysis environments. A common method used for scaling is to enlarge or shrink the entire scatterplot together with the inside points synchronously and propo rtionally. This process is called geometric scaling. However, geometric scaling of scatterplots may cause a perceptual bias, that is, the perceived and physical values of visual features may be dissociated with respect to geometric scaling. For example, if a scatterplot is projected from a laptop to a large projector screen, then observers may feel that the scatterplot shown on the projector has fewer points than that viewed on the laptop. This paper presents an evaluation study on the perceptual bias of visual features in scatterplots caused by geometric scaling. The study focuses on three fundamental visual features (i.e., numerosity, correlation, and cluster separation) and three hypotheses that are formulated on the basis of our experience. We carefully design three controlled experiments by using well-prepared synthetic data and recruit participants to complete the experiments on the basis of their subjective experience. With a detailed analysis of the experimental results, we obtain a set of instructive findings. First, geometric scaling causes a bias that has a linear relationship with the scale ratio. Second, no significant difference exists between the biases measured from normally and uniformly distributed scatterplots. Third, changing the point radius can correct the bias to a certain extent. These findings can be used to inspire the design decisions of scatterplots in various scenarios.
Speech enhancement (SE) aims to improve speech quality and intelligibility, which are both related to a smooth transition in speech segments that may carry linguistic information, e.g. phones and syllables. In this study, we propose a novel phone-for tified perceptual loss (PFPL) that takes phonetic information into account for training SE models. To effectively incorporate the phonetic information, the PFPL is computed based on latent representations of the wav2vec model, a powerful self-supervised encoder that renders rich phonetic information. To more accurately measure the distribution distances of the latent representations, the PFPL adopts the Wasserstein distance as the distance measure. Our experimental results first reveal that the PFPL is more correlated with the perceptual evaluation metrics, as compared to signal-level losses. Moreover, the results showed that the PFPL can enable a deep complex U-Net SE model to achieve highly competitive performance in terms of standardized quality and intelligibility evaluations on the Voice Bank-DEMAND dataset.
Anomaly detection plays a key role in air quality analysis by enhancing situational awareness and alerting users to potential hazards. However, existing anomaly detection approaches for air quality analysis have their own limitations regarding parame ter selection (e.g., need for extensive domain knowledge), computational expense, general applicability (e.g., require labeled data), interpretability, and the efficiency of analysis. Furthermore, the poor quality of collected air quality data (inconsistently formatted and sometimes missing) also increases the difficulty of analysis substantially. In this paper, we systematically formulate design requirements for a system that can solve these limitations and then propose AQEyes, an integrated visual analytics system for efficiently monitoring, detecting, and examining anomalies in air quality data. In particular, we propose a unified end-to-end tunable machine learning pipeline that includes several data pre-processors and featurizers to deal with data quality issues. The pipeline integrates an efficient unsupervised anomaly detection method that works without the use of labeled data and overcomes the limitations of existing approaches. Further, we develop an interactive visualization system to visualize the outputs from the pipeline. The system incorporates a set of novel visualization and interaction designs, allowing analysts to visually examine air quality dynamics and anomalous events in multiple scales and from multiple facets. We demonstrate the performance of this pipeline through a quantitative evaluation and show the effectiveness of the visualization system using qualitative case studies on real-world datasets.
The vast work in Deep Learning (DL) has led to a leap in image denoising research. Most DL solutions for this task have chosen to put their efforts on the denoisers architecture while maximizing distortion performance. However, distortion driven solu tions lead to blurry results with sub-optimal perceptual quality, especially in immoderate noise levels. In this paper we propose a different perspective, aiming to produce sharp and visually pleasing denoised images that are still faithful to their clean sources. Formally, our goal is to achieve high perceptual quality with acceptable distortion. This is attained by a stochastic denoiser that samples from the posterior distribution, trained as a generator in the framework of conditional generative adversarial networks (CGAN). Contrary to distortion-based regularization terms that conflict with perceptual quality, we introduce to the CGAN objective a theoretically founded penalty term that does not force a distortion requirement on individual samples, but rather on their mean. We showcase our proposed method with a novel denoiser architecture that achieves the reformed denoising goal and produces vivid and diverse outcomes in immoderate noise levels.
