Skyrmions in chiral magnetic materials are topologically stable and energetically balanced spin configurations appearing under the presence of ferromagnetic interaction (FMI) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Much of the current interest has focused on the effects of magneto-elastic coupling on these interactions under mechanical stimuli, such as uniaxial stresses for future applications in spintronics devices. Recent studies suggest that skyrmion shape deformations in thin films are attributed to an anisotropy in the coefficient of DMI, such that $D_{x}! ot=!D_{y}$, which makes the ratio $lambda/D$ anistropic, where the coefficient of FMI $lambda$ is isotropic. It is also possible that $lambda_{x}! ot=!lambda_{y}$ while $D$ is isotropic for $lambda/D$ to be anisotropic. In this paper, we study this problem using a new modeling technique constructed based on Finsler geometry (FG). Two possible FG models are examined: In the first (second) model, the FG modeling prescription is applied to the FMI (DMI) Hamiltonian. We find that these two different FG models results are consistent with the reported experimental data for skyrmion deformation. We also study responses of helical spin orders under lattice deformations corresponding to uniaxial extension/compression and find a clear difference between these two models in the stripe phase, elucidating which interaction of FMI and DMI is deformed to be anisotropic by uniaxial stresses.

Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) is a ferroelectric polymer characterized by negative strain along the direction of the applied electric field. However, the electromechanical response mechanism of PVDF remains unclear due to the complexity of the hie rarchical structure across the length scales. As described in this letter, we employ the Finsler geometry model as a new solution to the aforementioned problem and demonstrate that the deformations observed through Monte Carlo simulations on 3D tetrahedral lattices are nearly identical to those of real PVDF. Specifically, the simulated mechanical deformation and polarization are similar to those observed experimentally.

The pyramid-to-dome transition in Ge$_{x}$Si$_{1-x}$ on Si(100) initiated by step bunching on pyramidal quantum dots is atomistically simulated using a novel multi-state lattice model incorporating effective surface reconstructions. Results are expla ined by a simple theory based on a shallow island approximation. Under given deposition conditions in $d$ dimensions, the shape transition is shown to occur at island size $n_c$ following $n_c^{1/d} propto x^{-zeta}$ independent of temperature and deposition rate, where $zetaalt 2$ and $x$ is the actual Ge concentration in the island. The transition has an energy barrier dominated by the facet interface energy. Fast deposition however can out-run and delay the transition to larger island sizes.

In this paper we present a classical Monte Carlo simulation of the orthorhombic phase of crystalline polyethylene, using an explicit atom force field with unconstrained bond lengths and angles and periodic boundary conditions. We used a recently deve loped algorithm which apart from standard Metropolis local moves employs also global moves consisting of displacements of the center of mass of the whole chains in all three spatial directions as well as rotations of the chains around an axis parallel to the crystallographic c-direction. Our simulations are performed in the NpT ensemble, at zero pressure, and extend over the whole range of temperatures in which the orthorhombic phase is experimentally known to be stable (10 - 450 K). In order to investigate the finite-size effects in this extremely anisotropic crystal, we used different system sizes and different chain lengths, ranging from C_12 to C_96 chains, the total number of atoms in the super-cell being between 432 and 3456. We show here the results for structural parameters, such as the orthorhombic cell parameters a,b,c, and the setting angle of the chains, as well as internal parameters of the chains, such as the bond lengths and angles. Among thermodynamic quantities, we present results for thermal expansion coefficients, elastic constants and specific heat. We discuss the temperature dependence of the measured quantities as well as the related finite-size effects. In case of lattice parameters and thermal expansion coefficients, we compare our results to those obtained from other theoretical approaches as well as to some available experimental data. We also suggest some possible ways of extending this study.

We use the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method to calculate the ground state phase diagram of solid molecular hydrogen and examine the stability of the most important insulating phases relative to metallic crystalline molecular hydrogen. We de velop a new method to account for finite-size errors by combining the use of twist-averaged boundary conditions with corrections obtained using the Kwee-Zhang-Krakauer (KZK) functional in density functional theory. To study band-gap closure and find the metallization pressure, we perform accurate quasi-particle many-body calculations using the $GW$ method. In the static approximation, our DMC simulations indicate a transition from the insulating Cmca-12 structure to the metallic Cmca structure at around 375 GPa. The $GW$ band gap of Cmca-12 closes at roughly the same pressure. In the dynamic DMC phase diagram, which includes the effects of zero-point energy, the Cmca-12 structure remains stable up to 430 GPa, well above the pressure at which the $GW$ band gap closes. Our results predict that the semimetallic state observed experimentally at around 360 GPa [Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 108}, 146402 (2012)] may correspond to the Cmca-12 structure near the pressure at which the band gap closes. The dynamic DMC phase diagram indicates that the hexagonal close packed $P6_3/m$ structure, which has the largest band gap of the insulating structures considered, is stable up to 220 GPa. This is consistent with recent X-ray data taken at pressures up to 183 GPa [Phys. Rev. B {bf 82}, 060101(R) (2010)], which also reported a hexagonal close packed arrangement of hydrogen molecules.
We have studied the island size distribution and spatial correlation function of an island growth model under the effect of an elastic interaction of the form $1/r^{3}$. The mass distribution $P_n(t)$ that was obtained presents a pronounced peak that widens with the increase of the total coverage of the system, $theta$. The presence of this peak is an indication of the self-organization of the system, since it demonstrates that some sizes are more frequent than others. We have treated exactly the energy of the system using periodic boundary conditions which were used in the Monte-Carlo simulations. A discussion about the effect of different factors is presented.
