In this paper we study the Hessian map $h_{d,r}$ which associates to any hypersurface of degree $d$ in ${mathbb P}^r$ its Hessian hypersurface. We study general properties of this map and we prove that: $h_{d,1}$ is birational onto its image if $dgeq 5$; we study in detail the maps $h_{3,1}$, $h_{4,1}$ and $h_{3,2}$; we study the restriction of the Hessian map to the locus of hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with Waring rank $r+2$ in ${mathbb P}^r$, proving that this restriction is injective as soon as $rgeq 2$ and $dgeq 3$, which implies that $h_{3,3}$ is birational onto its image; we prove that the differential of the Hessian map is of maximal rank on the generic hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with Waring rank $r+2$ in ${mathbb P}^r$, as soon as $rgeq 2$ and $dgeq 3$.

We study the connected component of the automorphism group of a cubic hypersurface over complex numbers. When the cubic hypersurface has nonzero Hessian, this group is usually small. But there are examples with unusually large automorphism groups: th e secants of Severi varieties. Can we characterize them by the property of having unusually large automorphism groups? We study this question from the viewpoint of prolongations of the Lie algebras. Our result characterizes the secants of Severi varieties, among cubic hypersurfaces with nonzero Hessian and smooth singular locus, in terms of prolongations of certain type.
For a reduced hypersurface $V(f) subseteq mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Milnor algebra $M(f)$ is well understood when $V(f)$ is smooth, as well as when $V(f)$ has isolated singularities. We study the regularity of $M(f)$ when $V(f)$ has a positive dimensional singular locus. In certain situations, we prove that the regularity is bounded by $(d-2)(n+1)$, which is the degree of the Hessian polynomial of $f$. However, this is not always the case, and we prove that in $mathbb{P}^n$ the regularity of the Milnor algebra can grow quadratically in $d$.
Billey and Braden defined a geometric pattern map on flag manifolds which extends the generalized pattern map of Billey and Postnikov on Weyl groups. The interaction of this torus equivariant map with the Bruhat order and its action on line bundles l ead to formulas for its pullback on the equivariant cohomology ring and on equivariant K-theory. These formulas are in terms of the Borel presentation, the basis of Schubert classes, and localization at torus fixed points.

Let p be an odd prime number. We show that there exists a finite group of order p^{p+3} whose the mod p cycle map from the mod p Chow ring of its classifying space to its ordinary mod p cohomology is not injective.
This is an improved version of the eprint previously entitled Unexpected isomorphisms between hyperkahler fourfolds. We study smooth projective hyperkahler fourfolds that are deformations of Hilbert squares of K3 surfaces and are equipped with a po larization of fixed degree and divisibility. They are parametrized by a quasi-projective irreducible 20-dimensional moduli space and Verbitksys Torelli theorem implies that their period map is an open embedding. Our main result is that the complement of the image of the period map is a finite union of explicit Heegner divisors that we describe. We also prove that infinitely many Heegner divisors in a given period space have the property that their general points correspond to fourfolds which are isomorphic to Hilbert squares of a K3 surfaces, or to double EPW sextics. In two appendices, we determine the groups of biregular or birational automorphisms of various projective hyperkahler fourfolds with Picard number 1 or 2.
