We study the connected component of the automorphism group of a cubic hypersurface over complex numbers. When the cubic hypersurface has nonzero Hessian, this group is usually small. But there are examples with unusually large automorphism groups: the secants of Severi varieties. Can we characterize them by the property of having unusually large automorphism groups? We study this question from the viewpoint of prolongations of the Lie algebras. Our result characterizes the secants of Severi varieties, among cubic hypersurfaces with nonzero Hessian and smooth singular locus, in terms of prolongations of certain type.

A classical result of Bondal-Orlov states that a standard flip in birational geometry gives rise to a fully faithful functor between derived categories of coherent sheaves. We complete their embedding into a semiorthogonal decomposition by describing the complement. As an application, we can lift the quadratic Fano correspondence (due to Galkin-Shinder) in the Grothendieck ring of varieties between a smooth cubic hypersurface, its Fano variety of lines, and its Hilbert square, to a semiorthogonal decomposition. We also show that the Hilbert square of a cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 3 is again a Fano variety, so in particular the Fano variety of lines on a cubic hypersurface is a Fano visitor. The most interesting case is that of a cubic fourfold, where this exhibits the first higher-dimensional hyperkahler variety as a Fano visitor.

It is shown that an irreducible cubic hypersurface with nonzero Hessian and smooth singular locus is the secant variety of a Severi variety if and only if its Lie algebra of infinitesimal linear automorphisms admits a nonzero prolongation.
In the realm of conformal geometry, we give a classification of the Euclidean hypersurfaces that admit a non-trivial conformal infinitesimal variation. In the restricted case of conformal variations, such a classification was obtained by E. Cartan in 1917. The case of infinitesimal isometric variations was done by U. Sbrana in 1908. In particular, we show that the class of hypersurfaces that allow a conformal infinitesimal variation is much larger than the one considered by Cartan.
VB-groupoids and algebroids are vector bundle objects in the categories of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids respectively, and they are related via the Lie functor. VB-groupoids and algebroids play a prominent role in Poisson and related geometries. A dditionally, they can be seen as models for vector bundles over singular spaces. In this paper we study their infinitesimal automorphisms, i.e. vector fields on them generating a flow by diffeomorphisms preserving both the linear and the groupoid/algebroid structures. For a special class of VB-groupoids/algebroids coming from representations of Lie groupoids/algebroids, we prove that infinitesimal automorphisms are the same as multiplicative sections of a certain derivation groupoid/algebroid.

In this paper we study principally polarized abelian varieties that admit an automorphism of prime order $p>2$. It turns out that certain natural conditions on the multiplicities of its action on the differentials of the first kind do guarantee that those polarized varieties are not jacobians of curves.
