We introduce collinear drop jet substructure observables, which are unaffected by contributions from collinear radiation, and systematically probe soft radiation within jets. These observables can be designed to be either sensitive or insensitive to process-dependent soft radiation originating from outside the jet. Such collinear drop observables can be exploited as variables to distinguish quark, gluon, and color neutral initiated jets, for testing predictions for perturbative soft radiation in Monte Carlo simulations, for assessing models and universality for hadronization corrections, for examining the efficiency of pileup subtraction methods, and for any other application that leaves an imprint on soft radiation. We discuss examples of collinear drop observables that are based both on clustering and on jet shapes. Using the soft-collinear effective theory we derive factorization expressions for collinear drop observables from QCD jets, and carry out a resummation of logarithmically enhanced contributions at next-to-leading-logarithmic order. We also identify an infinite class of collinear drop observables for which the leading double logarithms are absent.

We present an extraction of the valence transversity parton distributions based on an analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets. Recently released data for proton and deuteron targets at HERMES a nd COMPASS permit a flavor separation of valence transversities. The present extraction is performed in the framework of collinear factorization, where dihadron fragmentation functions are involved. The latter are taken from a previous analysis of electron-positron annihilation measurements.
Familiar factorized descriptions of classic QCD processes such as deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS) apply in the limit of very large hard scales, much larger than nonperturbative mass scales and other nonperturbative physical properties like intrinsi c transverse momentum. Since many interesting DIS studies occur at kinematic regions where the hard scale, $Q sim$ 1-2 GeV, is not very much greater than the hadron masses involved, and the Bjorken scaling variable $x_{bj}$ is large, $x_{bj} gtrsim 0.5$, it is important to examine the boundaries of the most basic factorization assumptions and assess whether improved starting points are needed. Using an idealized field-theoretic model that contains most of the essential elements that a factorization derivation must confront, we retrace the steps of factorization approximations and compare with calculations that keep all kinematics exact. We examine the relative importance of such quantities as the target mass, light quark masses, and intrinsic parton transverse momentum, and argue that a careful accounting of parton virtuality is essential for treating power corrections to collinear factorization. We use our observations to motivate searches for new or enhanced factorization theorems specifically designed to deal with moderately low-$Q$ and large-$x_{bj}$ physics.
We calculate large mass diphoton exclusive photoproduction in the framework of collinear QCD factorization at next to leading order in {alpha}s and at leading twist. Collinear divergences of the coefficient function are absorbed by the evolution of t he generalized parton distributions (GPDs). This result enlarges the existing factorization proofs to 2 -> 3 processes, opening new reactions to a trustable extraction of GPDs.
The factorization of multi-leg gauge theory amplitudes in the soft and collinear limits provides strong constraints on the structure of amplitudes, and enables efficient calculations of multi-jet observables at the LHC. There is significant interest in extending this understanding to include subleading powers in the soft and collinear limits. While this has been achieved for low point amplitudes, for higher point functions there is a proliferation of variables and more complicated phase space, making the analysis more challenging. By combining the subleading power expansion of spinor-helicity variables in collinear limits with consistency relations derived from the soft collinear effective theory, we show how to efficiently extract the subleading power leading logarithms of $N$-jet event shape observables directly from known spinor-helicity amplitudes. At subleading power, we observe the presence of power law singularities arising solely from the expansion of the amplitudes, which for hadron collider event shapes lead to the presence of derivatives of parton distributions. The techniques introduced here can be used to efficiently compute the power corrections for $N$-jettiness subtractions for processes involving jets at the LHC.
Energy Correlators measure the energy deposited in multiple detectors as a function of the angles between the detectors. In this paper, we analytically compute the three particle correlator in the collinear limit in QCD for quark and gluon jets, and also in $mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We find an intriguing duality between the integrals for the energy correlators and infrared finite Feynman parameter integrals, which maps the angles of the correlators to dual momentum variables. In $mathcal{N}=4$, we use this duality to express our result as a rational sum of simple Feynman integrals (triangles and boxes). In QCD our result is expressed as a sum of the same transcendental functions, but with more complicated rational functions of cross ratio variables as coefficients. Our results represent the first analytic calculation of a three-prong jet substructure observable of phenomenological relevance for the LHC, revealing unexplored simplicity in the energy flow of QCD jets. They also provide valuable data for improving the understanding of the light-ray operator product expansion.
