We propose a generic scattering matrix model implementable in photonics to engineer a new Floquet metallic phase that combines two distinct topological properties: the winding of the bulk bands and the existence of robust chiral edge states. The winding of the bulk bands gives rise to a wavepacket oscillations in real space while conserving its initial momentum. Our findings open the way to the study of a new class of winding Floquet systems.

We develop a theory for the non-equilibrium screening of a charged impurity in a two-dimensional electron system under a strong time-periodic drive. Our analysis of the time-averaged polarization function and dielectric function reveals that Floquet driving modifies the screened impurity potential in two main regimes. In the weak drive regime, the time-averaged screened potential exhibits unconventional Friedel oscillations with multiple spatial periods contributed by a principal period modulated by higher-order periods, which are due to the emergence of additional Kohn anomalies in the polarization function. In the strong drive regime, the time-averaged impurity potential becomes almost unscreened and does not exhibit Friedel oscillations. This tunable Friedel oscillations is a result of the dynamic gating effect of the time-dependent driving field on the two-dimensional electron system.

A network model that can describe light propagation in one-dimensional ring-resonator arrays with a dimer structure is studied as a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-type Floquet network. The model can be regarded as a Floquet system without periodic driving and exhibits quasienergy band structures of the ring propagation phase. Resulting band gaps support deterministic edge states depending on hopping S-matrices between adjacent rings. The number of edge states is one if the Zak phase is $pi$. If the Zak phase is 0, the number is either zero or two. The criterion of the latter number is given analytically in terms of the reflection matrix of the semi-infinite system. These properties are directly verified by changing S-matrix parameters and boundary condition continuously.
We theoretically investigate basic properties of nonequilibrium steady states of periodically-driven open quantum systems based on the full solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equation. In a resonantly driving condition, we find that the transverse relaxat ion, also known as decoherence, significantly destructs the formation of Floquet states while the longitudinal relaxation does not directly affect it. Furthermore, by evaluating the quasienergy spectrum of the nonequilibrium steady states, we demonstrate that the Rabi splitting can be observed as long as the decoherence time is as short as one third of the Rabi-cycle. Moreover, we find that Floquet states can be formed even under significant dissipation when the decoherence time is substantially shorter than the cycle of driving, once the driving field strength becomes strong enough. In an off-resonant condition, we demonstrate that the Floquet states can be realized even in weak field regimes because the system is not excited and the decoherence mechanism is not activated. Once the field strength becomes strong enough, the system can be excited by nonlinear processes and the decoherence process becomes active. As a result, the Floquet states are significantly disturbed by the environment even in the off-resonant condition. Thus, we show here that the suppression of heating is a key condition for the realization of Floquet states in both on and off-resonant conditions not only because it prevents material damage but also because it contributes to preserving coherence.
Intense electromagnetic evanescent fields are thermally excited in near fields on material surfaces (at distances smaller than the wavelength of peak thermal radiation). The property of the fields is of strong interest for it is material-specific and is important for understanding a variety of surface-related effects, such as friction forces, Casimir forces, near-field heat transfer, and surface-coupled molecular dynamics. On metal surfaces, relevance of surface plasmon polaritons (SPlPs), coupled to collective motion of conduction electrons, has attracted strong interest, but has not been explicitly clarified up to the present time. Here, using a passive terahertz (THz) near-field microscope with unprecedented high sensitivity, we unveil detailed nature of thermally generated evanescent fields (wavelength:lamda0~14.5micron) on metals at room temperature. Our experimental results unambiguously indicate that the thermal waves are short-wavelength fluctuating electromagnetic fields, from which relevance of SPlPs is ruled out.
An easy-plane spin winding in a quantum spin chain can be treated as a transport quantity, which propagates along the chain but has a finite lifetime due to phase slips. In a hydrodynamic formulation for the winding dynamics, the quantum continuity e quation acquires a source term due to the transverse vorticity flow. The latter reflects the phase slips and generally compromises the global conservation law. A linear-response formalism for the nonlocal winding transport then reduces to a Kubo response for the winding flow along the spin chain, in conjunction with the parasitic vorticity flow transverse to it. One-dimensional topological hydrodynamics can be recovered when the vorticity flow is asymptotically small. Starting with a microscopic spin-chain formulation, we focus on the asymptotic behavior of the winding transport based on the renormalized sine-Gordon equation, incorporating phase slips as well as Gilbert damping. A generic electrical device is proposed to manifest this physics. We thus suggest winding conductivity as a tangible concept that can characterize low-energy dynamics in a broad class of quantum magnets.
