Vegetable oil hybrid films cross-linked at the air-water interface: formation kinetics and physical characterization

Vegetable oil based hybrid films were developed thanks to a novel solvent- and heating- free method at the air-water interface using silylated castor oil cross-linked via a sol-gel reaction. To understand the mechanism of the hybrid film formation, the reaction kinetics was studied in detail by using complementary techniques: rheology, thermogravimetric analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of the final films were investigated by nano-indentation, whereas their structure was studied using a combination of wide-angle X-ray scattering, electron diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. We found that solid and transparent films form in 24 hours and, by changing the silica precursor to castor oil ratio, their mechanical properties are tunable in the MPa-range by about a factor of twenty. In addition to that, a possible optimization of the cross-linking reaction with different catalysts was explored and finally, cytotoxicity tests were performed on fibroblasts proving the absence of film toxicity. The results of this work pave the way to a straightforward synthesis of castor-oil films with tunable mechanical properties: hybrid films cross-linked at the air-water interface combine an easy and cheap spreading protocol with the features of their thermal history optimized for possible future micro/nano drug loading, thus representing excellent candidates for the replacement of non-environment friendly petroleum-based materials.

The formation of smart emulsions or foams whose stability can be controlled on-demand by switching external parameters is of great interest for basic research and applications. An emerging group of smart stabilizers are microgels, which are nano- and micro-sized, three-dimensional polymer networks that are swollen by a good solvent. In the last decades, the influence of various external stimuli on the two-dimensional phase behavior of microgels at air- and oil-water interfaces has been studied. However, the impact of the top-phase itself has been barely considered. Here, we present data that directly address the influence of the top-phase on the microgel properties at interfaces. The dimensions of pNIPAM microgels are measured after deposition from two interfaces, i.e., air- and decane-water. While the total in-plane size of the microgel increases with increasing interfacial tension, the portions or fractions of the microgels situated in the aqueous phase are not affected. We correlate the area microgels occupy to the surface tensions of the interfaces, which allows to estimate an elastic modulus. In comparison to nanoindentation measurements, we observe a larger elastic modulus for the microgels. By combining compression, deposition, and visualization, we show that the two-dimensional phase behavior of the microgel monolayers is not altered, although the microgels have a larger total in-plane size at higher interfacial tension. Antagonistic salts are salts which consist of hydrophilic and hydrophobic ions. In a binary mixture of water and organic solvent, these ions preferentially dissolve into different phases. We investigate the effect of an antagonistic salt, tetraphenyl phosphonium chloride PPh$_4$Cl, in a mixture of water and 2,6-lutidine by means of Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulations. For increasing concentrations of the salt the two-phase region is shrunk and the interfacial tension in reduced, in contrast to what happens when a normal salt is added to such a mixture. The MD simulations allow us to investigate in detail the mechanism behind the reduction of the surface tension. We obtain the ion and composition distributions around the interface and determine the hydrogen bonds in the system and conclude that the addition of salt alter the hydrogen bonding.

We study the behavior of five proteins at the air-water and oil-water interfaces by all-atom molecular dynamics. The proteins are found to get distorted when pinned to the interface. This behavior is consistent with the phenomenological way of introd ucing the interfaces in a coarse-grained model through a force that depends on the hydropathy indices of the residues. Proteins couple to the oil-water interface stronger than to the air- water one. They diffuse slower at the oil-water interface but do not depin from it, whereas depinning events are observed at the other interface. The reduction of the disulfide bonds slows the diffusion down.
Hydrophobic PMMA colloidal particles, when dispersed in oil with a relatively high dielectric constant, can become highly charged. In the presence of an interface with a conducting aqueous phase, image charge effects lead to strong binding of colloid al particles to the interface, even though the particles are wetted very little by the aqueous phase. In this paper, we study both the behavior of individual colloidal particles as they approach the interface, and the interactions between particles that are already interfacially bound. We demonstrate that using particles which are minimally wetted by the aqueous phase allows us to isolate and study those interactions which are due solely to charging of the particle surface in oil. Finally, we show that these interactions can be understood by a simple image-charge model in which the particle charge $q$ is the sole fitting parameter.
Recent reports on the production of hydrogen peroxide (H$_2$O$_2$) on the surface of condensed water microdroplets without the addition of catalysts or additives have sparked significant interest. The underlying mechanism is speculated to be ultrahig h electric fields at the air-water interface; smaller droplets present higher interfacial area and produce higher (detectable) H$_2$O$_2$ yields. Herein, we present an alternative explanation for these experimental observations. We compare H$_2$O$_2$ production in water microdroplets condensed from vapor produced via (i) heating water to 50-70 {deg}C and (ii) ultrasonic humidification (as exploited in the original report). Water microdroplets condensed after heating do not show any enhancement in the H$_2$O$_2$ level in comparison to the bulk water, regardless of droplet size or the substrate wettability. In contrast, those condensed after ultrasonic humidification produce significantly higher H$_2$O$_2$ quantities. We conclude that the ultrasonication of water contributes to the H$_2$O$_2$ production, not droplet interfacial effects.
