Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have enabled significant improvements in pedestrian detection owing to the strong representation ability of the CNN features. Recently, aggregating features from multiple layers of a CNN has been considered as an effective approach, however, the same approach regarding feature representation is used for detecting pedestrians of varying scales. Consequently, it is not guaranteed that the feature representation for pedestrians of a particular scale is optimised. In this paper, we propose a Scale-Aware Multi-resolution (SAM) method for pedestrian detection which can adaptively select multi-resolution convolutional features according to pedestrian sizes. The proposed SAM method extracts the appropriate CNN features that have strong representation ability as well as sufficient feature resolution, given the size of the pedestrian candidate output from a region proposal network. Moreover, we propose an enhanced SAM method, termed as SAM+, which incorporates complementary features channels and achieves further performance improvement. Evaluations on the challenging Caltech and KITTI pedestrian benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method.

We present a multi-camera 3D pedestrian detection method that does not need to train using data from the target scene. We estimate pedestrian location on the ground plane using a novel heuristic based on human body poses and persons bounding boxes fr om an off-the-shelf monocular detector. We then project these locations onto the world ground plane and fuse them with a new formulation of a clique cover problem. We also propose an optional step for exploiting pedestrian appearance during fusion by using a domain-generalizable person re-identification model. We evaluated the proposed approach on the challenging WILDTRACK dataset. It obtained a MODA of 0.569 and an F-score of 0.78, superior to state-of-the-art generalizable detection techniques.

In instance-level detection tasks (e.g., object detection), reducing input resolution is an easy option to improve runtime efficiency. However, this option traditionally hurts the detection performance much. This paper focuses on boosting the perform ance of low-resolution models by distilling knowledge from a high- or multi-resolution model. We first identify the challenge of applying knowledge distillation (KD) to teacher and student networks that act on different input resolutions. To tackle it, we explore the idea of spatially aligning feature maps between models of varying input resolutions by shifting feature pyramid positions and introduce aligned multi-scale training to train a multi-scale teacher that can distill its knowledge to a low-resolution student. Further, we propose crossing feature-level fusion to dynamically fuse teachers multi-resolution features to guide the student better. On several instance-level detection tasks and datasets, the low-resolution models trained via our approach perform competitively with high-resolution models trained via conventional multi-scale training, while outperforming the latters low-resolution models by 2.1% to 3.6% in terms of mAP. Pedestrian detection has achieved great improvements with the help of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). CNN can learn high-level features from input images, but the insufficient spatial resolution of CNN feature channels (feature maps) may cause a loss of information, which is harmful especially to small instances. In this paper, we propose a new pedestrian detection framework, which extends the successful RPN+BF framework to combine handcrafted features and CNN features. RoI-pooling is used to extract features from both handcrafted channels (e.g. HOG+LUV, CheckerBoards or RotatedFilters) and CNN channels. Since handcrafted channels always have higher spatial resolution than CNN channels, we apply RoI-pooling with larger output resolution to handcrafted channels to keep more detailed information. Our ablation experiments show that the developed handcrafted features can reach better detection accuracy than the CNN features extracted from the VGG-16 net, and a performance gain can be achieved by combining them. Experimental results on Caltech pedestrian dataset with the original annotations and the improved annotations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. When using a more advanced RPN in our framework, our approach can be further improved and get competitive results on both benchmarks.

Ship detection has been an active and vital topic in the field of remote sensing for a decade, but it is still a challenging problem due to the large scale variations, the high aspect ratios, the intensive arrangement, and the background clutter dist urbance. In this letter, we propose a locality-aware rotated ship detection (LARSD) framework based on a multi-scale convolutional neural network (CNN) to tackle these issues. The proposed framework applies a UNet-like multi-scale CNN to generate multi-scale feature maps with high-level semantic information in high resolution. Then, a rotated anchor-based regression is applied for directly predicting the probability, the edge distances, and the angle of ships. Finally, a locality-aware score alignment is proposed to fix the mismatch between classification results and location results caused by the independence of each subnet. Furthermore, to enlarge the datasets of ship detection, we build a new high-resolution ship detection (HRSD) dataset, where 2499 images and 9269 instances were collected from Google Earth with different resolutions. Experiments based on public dataset HRSC2016 and our HRSD dataset demonstrate that our detection method achieves state-of-the-art performance.
Pedestrian detection benefits greatly from deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, it is inherently hard for CNNs to handle situations in the presence of occlusion and scale variation. In this paper, we propose W$^3$Net, which attempts to address above challenges by decomposing the pedestrian detection task into textbf{textit{W}}here, textbf{textit{W}}hat and textbf{textit{W}}hether problem directing against pedestrian localization, scale prediction and classification correspondingly. Specifically, for a pedestrian instance, we formulate its feature by three steps. i) We generate a bird view map, which is naturally free from occlusion issues, and scan all points on it to look for suitable locations for each pedestrian instance. ii) Instead of utilizing pre-fixed anchors, we model the interdependency between depth and scale aiming at generating depth-guided scales at different locations for better matching instances of different sizes. iii) We learn a latent vector shared by both visual and corpus space, by which false positives with similar vertical structure but lacking human partial features would be filtered out. We achieve state-of-the-art results on widely used datasets (Citypersons and Caltech). In particular. when evaluating on heavy occlusion subset, our results reduce MR$^{-2}$ from 49.3$%$ to 18.7$%$ on Citypersons, and from 45.18$%$ to 28.33$%$ on Caltech.
