We present a theory for the diffraction of large molecules or nanoparticles at a standing light wave. Such particles can act as a genuine photon absorbers due to their numerous internal degrees of freedom effecting fast internal energy conversion. Our theory incorporates the interplay of three light-induced properties: the coherent phase modulation due to the dipole interaction, a non-unitary absorption-induced amplitude modulation described as a generalized measurement, and a coherent recoil splitting that resembles a quantum random walk in steps of the photon momentum. We discuss how these effects show up in near-field and far-field interference schemes, and we confirm our effective description by a dynamic evaluation of the grating interaction, which accounts for the internal states.

In optical pumping of rubidium, a new kind of absorption occurs with a higher amplitude of radio frequency current. From measurement of the corresponding magnetic field value where this absorption occurs, there is a conclusion that it is multi-photon absorption. Both the degeneracy and energy of photons contribute to the intensity.
In this paper we examine the N-photon absorption properties of N00N states, a subclass of path entangled number states. We consider two cases. The first involves the N-photon absorption properties of the ideal N00N state, one that does not include sp ectral information. We study how the N-photon absorption probability of this state scales with N. We compare this to the absorption probability of various other states. The second case is that of two-photon absorption for an N = 2 N00N state generated from a type II spontaneous down conversion event. In this situation we find that the absorption probability is both better than analogous coherent light (due to frequency entanglement) and highly dependent on the optical setup. We show that the poor production rates of quantum states of light may be partially mitigated by adjusting the spectral parameters to improve their two-photon absorption rates. This work has application to quantum imaging, particularly quantum lithography, where the N-photon absorbing process in the lithographic resist must be optimized for practical applications.

Traditional optical phase imprinting of matter waves is of a dynamical nature. In this paper we show that both Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases can be optically imprinted onto matter waves, yielding a number of interesting phenomena such as w avepacket re-directing and wavepacket splitting. In addition to their fundamental interest, our results open up new opportunities for robust optical control of matter waves.
We propose a scheme to make use of recent advances in cavity QED-enhanced resonance fluorescence from quantum dots to generate a stream of entangled and indistinguishable photons. We then demonstrate that we can optically manipulate the state of a tr apped hole spin to achieve complete coherent control of a qubit. In combination with the selective cavity enhancement of the resonantly excited transition, we use this capability to perform a proof-of-principle demonstration of our proposal by showing that the time bin of a single photon is dependent on the measured state of the trapped spin.

In current Bose-Einstein condensate experiments, the shot-to-shot variation of atom number fluctuates up to 10%. In here, we present a procedure to suppress such fluctuations by using a nonlinear p-pi-pbar matter wave interferometer for a Bose-Einste in condensate with two internal states and a high beam-splitter asymmetry (p, pbar not-equal 0.5). We analyze the situation for an inhomogeneous trap within the Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory, as well as a quantum mechanical Josephson model, which addresses complementary aspects of the problem and agrees well otherwise.
