We report hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements of the electronic structure of the prototypical correlated oxide SrxCa1-xVO3. By comparing spectra recorded at different excitation energies, we show that 2.2 keV photoelectrons contain a substantial surface component, whereas 4.2 keV photoelectrons originate essentially from the bulk of the sample. Bulk-sensitive measurements of the O 2p valence band are found to be in good agreement with ab initio calculations of the electronic structure, with some modest adjustments to the orbital-dependent photoionization cross sections. The evolution of the O 2p electronic structure as a function of the Sr content is dominated by A-site hybridization. Near the Fermi level, the correlated V 3d Hubbard bands are found to evolve in both binding energy and spectral weight as a function of distance from the vacuum interface, revealing higher correlation at the surface than in the bulk.

In the present study we examine nature of a charge ordering transition in monolayer vanadium diselenide ($VSe_{2}$), which would be distinguished from that of $VSe_{2}$ bulk samples, driven by more enhanced electron-electron correlations. Recently, a ngle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements uncovered that the Fermi surface nesting becomes perfect, where the dynamics of hot electrons is dispersionless along the orthogonal direction of the nesting wave-vector. In addition, scanning tunneling microscopy measurements confirmed that the resulting CDW state shows essentially the same modulation pattern as the three dimensional system of $VSe_{2}$. Here, we perform the renormalization group analysis based on an effective field theory in terms of critical CDW fluctuations and hot electrons of imperfect Fermi-surface nesting. As a result, we reveal that the imperfect nesting universally flows into perfect nesting in two dimensions, where the Fermi velocity along the orthogonal direction of the nesting vector vanishes generically. We argue that this electronic reconstruction is responsible for the observation that the CDW transition temperature is much more enhanced to be around $T_{c} > 300$ $K$ than that of the bulk sample.

In atomic physics, the Hund rule says that the largest spin and orbital state is realized due to the interplay of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and the Coulomb interactions. Here, we show that in ferromagnetic solids the effective SOC and the orbital magnetic moment can be dramatically enhanced by a factor of $1/[1-(2U^prime-U-J_H)rho_0]$, where $U$ and $U^prime$ are the on-site Coulomb interaction within the same oribtals and between different orbitals, respectively, $J_H$ is the Hund coupling, and $rho_0$ is the average density of states. This factor is obtained by using the two-orbital as well as five-orbital Hubbard models with SOC. We also find that the spin polarization is more favorable than the orbital polarization, being consistent with experimental observations. This present work provides a fundamental basis for understanding the enhancements of SOC and orbital moment by Coulomb interactions in ferromagnets, which would have wide applications in spintronics.

The newly discovered CaFe$_4$As$_3$ system displays low-temperature Fermi liquid behavior, with enhanced electron-electron correlations. At high temperatures, the magnetic susceptibility shows Curie-Weiss behavior, with a large temperature-independen t contribution. Antiferromagnetic ordering is observed below T$_N$ = (88.0 $pm$ 1.0) K, possibly via a spin density wave (SDW) transition. A remarkably sharp drop in resistivity occurs below T$_2$ = (26.4 $pm$ 1.0) K, correlated with a similarly abrupt increase in the susceptibility, but no visible feature in the specific heat. The electronic specific heat coefficient $gamma$ at low temperatures is close to 0.02 J mol$^{-1}_{Fe}$ K$^{-2}$, but a higher value for $gamma$ ($sim$0.08 J mol$^{-1}_{Fe}$ K$^{-2}$ can be inferred from a linear C$ / $T textit{vs.} T$^2$ just above T$_2$. The Kadowaki-Woods ratio A$/gamma^2$ = 55$*10^{-5}$ $mu Omega$cm mol$^2$ K$^2 $mJ$^{-2}$ is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of heavy fermions.
Conducting and magnetic properties of a material often change in some confined geometries. However, a situation where a non-magnetic semiconductor becomes both metallic and magnetic at the surface is quite rare, and to the best of our knowledge has n ever been observed in experiment. In this work, we employ first-principles electronic structure theory to predict that such a peculiar magnetic state emerges in a family of quaternary Heusler compounds. We investigate magnetic and electronic properties of CoCrTiP, FeMnTiP and CoMnVAl. For the latter material, we also analyse the magnetic exchange interactions and use them for parametrizing an effective spin Hamiltonian. According to our results, magnetism in this material should persist at temperatures at least as high as 155 K.
Combined experimental and modeling studies of the magnetocaloric effect, ultrasound, and magnetostriction were performed on single-crystal samples of the spin-dimer system Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ in large magnetic fields, to probe the spin-correlated regim e in the proximity of the field-induced XY-type antiferromagnetic order also referred to as a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. The magnetocaloric effect, measured under adiabatic conditions, reveals details of the field-temperature ($H,T$) phase diagram, a dome characterized by critical magnetic fields $H_{c1}$ = 30.4 T, $H_{c2}$ = 62 T, and a single maximum ordering temperature $T_{{rm max}}(45~$T$)simeq$8 K. The sample temperature was observed to drop significantly as the magnetic field is increased, even for initial temperatures above $T_{{rm max}}$, indicating a significant magnetic entropy associated to the field-induced closure of the spin gap. The ultrasound and magnetostriction experiments probe the coupling between the lattice degrees of freedom and the magnetism in Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Our experimental results are qualitatively reproduced by a minimalistic phenomenological model of the exchange-striction by which sound waves renormalize the effective exchange couplings.
