We present the first detection of the l-C3H+ hydrocarbon in the interstellar medium. The Horsehead WHISPER project, a millimeter unbiased line survey at two positions, namely the photo-dissociation region (PDR) and the nearby shielded core, revealed a consistent set of eight unidentified lines toward the PDR position. Six of them are detected with a signal-to-noise ratio from 6 to 19, while the two last ones are tentatively detected. Mostly noise appears at the same frequency toward the dense core, located less than 40 away. We simultaneously fit 1) the rotational and centrifugal distortion constants of a linear rotor, and 2) the Gaussian line shapes located at the eight predicted frequencies. The observed lines can be accurately fitted with a linear rotor model, implying a 1Sigma ground electronic state. The deduced rotational constant value is Be= 11244.9512 +/- 0.0015 MHz, close to that of l-C3H. We thus associate the lines to the l-C3H+ hydrocarbon cation, which enables us to constrain the chemistry of small hydrocarbons. A rotational diagram is then used to infer the excitation temperature and the column density. We finally compare the abundance to the results of the Meudon PDR photochemical model.

Aims. To follow the species chemistry arising in diverse sources of the Galaxy with Herschel. Methods. SPIRE FTS sparse sampled maps of the Orion bar & compact HII regions G29.96-0.02 and G32.80+0.19 have been analyzed. Results. Beyond the wealth of atomic and molecular lines detected in the high-resolution spectra obtained with the FTS of SPIRE in the Orion Bar, one emission line is found to lie at the position of the fundamental rotational transition of CH+ as measured precisely in the laboratory (Pearson & Drouion 2006). This coincidence suggests that it is the first detection of the fundamental rotational transition of CH+. This claim is strengthened by the observation of the lambda doublet transitions arising from its relative, CH, which are also observed in the same spectrum. The broad spectral coverage of the SPIRE FTS allows for the simultaneous measurement of these closely related chemically species, under the same observing conditions. The importance of these lines are discussed and a comparison with results obtained from models of the Photon Dominated Region (PDR) of Orion are presented. The CH+ line also appears in absorption in the spectra of the two galactic compact HII regions G29.96-0.02 and G32.80+0.19, which is likely due to the presence of CH+ in the the Cold Neutral Medium of the galactic plane. These detections will shed light on the formation processes and on the existence of CH+, which are still outstanding questions in astrophysics.
We introduce xCOLD GASS, a legacy survey providing a census of molecular gas in the local Universe. Building upon the original COLD GASS survey, we present here the full sample of 532 galaxies with CO(1-0) measurements from the IRAM-30m telescope. Th e sample is mass-selected in the redshift interval $0.01<z<0.05$ from SDSS, and therefore representative of the local galaxy population with M$_{ast}>10^9$M$_{odot}$. The CO(1-0) flux measurements are complemented by observations of the CO(2-1) line with both the IRAM-30m and APEX telescopes, HI observations from Arecibo, and photometry from SDSS, WISE and GALEX. Combining the IRAM and APEX data, we find that the CO(2-1) to CO(1-0) luminosity ratio for integrated measurements is $r_{21}=0.79pm0.03$, with no systematic variations across the sample. The CO(1-0) luminosity function is constructed and best fit with a Schechter function with parameters {$L_{mathrm{CO}}^* = (7.77pm2.11) times 10^9,mathrm{K,km,s^{-1}, pc^{2}}$, $phi^{*} = (9.84pm5.41) times 10^{-4} , mathrm{Mpc^{-3}}$ and $alpha = -1.19pm0.05$}. With the sample now complete down to stellar masses of $10^9$M$_{odot}$, we are able to extend our study of gas scaling relations and confirm that both molecular gas fraction and depletion timescale vary with specific star formation rate (or offset from the star-formation main sequence) much more strongly than they depend on stellar mass. Comparing the xCOLD GASS results with outputs from hydrodynamic and semi-analytic models, we highlight the constraining power of cold gas scaling relations on models of galaxy formation.

To prepare for the unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution provided by ALMA and Herschel/HIFI, chemical models are being benchmarked against each other. It is obvious that chemical models also need well-constrained observations that can serve a s references. Photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) are particularly well suited to serve as references because they make the link between diffuse and molecular clouds, thus enabling astronomers to probe a large variety of physical and chemical processes. At a distance of 400 pc (1 corresponding to 0.002 pc), the Horsehead PDR is very close to the prototypical kind of source (i.e. 1D, edge-on) needed to serve as a reference to models.
Pety et al. (2012) recently reported the detection of several transitions of an unknown carrier in the Horsehead PDR and attribute them to l-C3H+. Here, we have tested the predictive power of their fit by searching for, and identifying, the previousl y unobserved J=1-0 and J=2-1 transitions of the unknown carrier (B11244) towards Sgr B2(N) in data from the publicly available PRIMOS project. Also presented here are observations of the J=6-5 and J=7-6 transitions towards Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(OH) using the Barry E. Turner Legacy Survey and results from the Kaifu et al. (2004) survey of TMC-1. We calculate an excitation temperature and column density of B11244 of ~10 K and ~10^13 cm-2 in Sgr B2(N) and ~79 K with an upper limit of < 1.5 x 10^13 cm-2 in Sgr B2(OH) and find trace evidence for the cations presence in TMC-1. Finally, we present spectra of the neutral species in both Sgr B2(N) and TMC-1, and comment on the robustness of the assignment of the detected signals to l-C3H+.
Using the IRAM 30m telescope we have surveyed a $1times0.8^{circ}$ part of the Orion molecular cloud in the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO (2-1) lines with a maximal spatial resolution of $sim$11 and spectral resolution of $sim$ 0.4 km~s$^{-1}$. The cloud a ppears filamentary, clumpy and with a complex kinematical structure. We derive an estimated mass of the cloud of 7700 M$_{text{Sun}}$ (half of which is found in regions with visual extinctions $A_V$ below $sim$10) and a dynamical age for the nebula of the order of 0.2 Myrs. The energy balance suggests that magnetic fields play an important role in supporting the cloud, at large and small scales. According to our analysis, the turbulent kinetic energy in the molecular gas due to outflows is comparable to turbulent kinetic energy resulting from the interaction of the cloud with the HII region. This latter feedback appears negative, i.e. the triggering of star formation by the HII region is inefficient in Orion. The reduced data as well as additional products such as the column density map are made available online at http://userpages.irap.omp.eu/~oberne/Olivier_Berne/Data.
