We investigate the formation of CIII 4647-51-50 and CIII 5696 in the atmosphere of O stars to see if they can be reliably used for abundance determinations. We use atmosphere models computed with the code CMFGEN. The key physical ingredients explaining the formation of the CIII lines are extracted from comparisons of models with different stellar parameters and through examining rates controlling the level populations. The strength of CIII 5696 critically depends on UV CIII lines at 386, 574 and 884 A. These lines control the CIII 5696 upper and lower level population. CIII 884 plays a key role in late O stars where it drains the lower level of CIII 5696. CIII 386 and CIII 574 are more important at early spectral types. The overlap of these UV lines with FeIV 386.262, FeIV 574.232 and SV 884.531 influences the radiative transfer at 386, 574 and 884 A, and consequently affects the strength of CIII 5696. CIII 4650 is mainly controlled by the CIII 538 line which acts as a drain on its lower level. FeIV 538.057 interacts with CIII 538 and has an impact on the CIII 4650 profile. Low temperature dielectronic recombinations have a negligible effect on the line profiles. Given our current understanding of the stellar and wind properties of O stars, and in view of the present results, the determination of accurate carbon abundances from CIII 4647-51-50 and CIII 5696 is an extremely challenging task. Uncertainties lower than a factor of two on C/H determinations based only on these two sets of lines should be regarder as highly doubtful. Our results provide a possible explanation of the variability of CIII 4650 in Of?p stars.

We present a novel method to simultaneously characterise the star formation law and the interstellar medium properties of galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) through the combination of [CII] 158$mu$m (and its known relation with star formatio n rate) and CIII]$lambda$1909{AA} emission line data. The method, based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm, allows to determine the target galaxy average density, $n$, gas metallicity, $Z$, and burstiness parameter, $kappa_s$, quantifying deviations from the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. As an application, we consider COS-3018 (z=6.854), the only EoR Lyman Break Galaxy so far detected in both [CII] and CIII]. We show that COS-3018 is a moderate starburst ($kappa_s approx 3$), with $Zapprox 0.4, Z_{odot}$, and $n approx 500, {rm cm^{-3}}$. Our method will be optimally applied to joint ALMA and JWST targets.
Luminous red galaxies (LRGs) are the most massive galaxies at $zsim 0.5$ and, by selection, have negligible star formation. These objects have halo masses between those of $L_{*}$ galaxies, whose circumgalactic media (CGM) are observed to have large masses of cold gas, and clusters of galaxies, which primarily contain hot gas. Here we report detections of strong and extended metal (CIII 977) and HI lines in the CGM of two LRGs. The CIII lines have equivalent widths of $sim 1.8$ r{A} and $sim 1.2$ r{A} , and velocity spreads of $sim 796$ km s$^{-1}$ and $sim 1245$ km s$^{-1}$, exceeding all such measurements from local $sim L_{*}$ galaxies (maximal CIII equivalent widths $sim 1$ r{A}). The data demonstrate that a subset of halos hosting very massive, quenched galaxies contain significant complexes of cold gas. Possible scenarios to explain our observations include that the LRGs CGM originate from past activity (e.g., star formation or active galactic nuclei driven outflows) or from the CGM of galaxies in overlapping subhalos. We favor the latter scenario, in which the properties of the CGM are more tightly linked to the underlying dark matter halo than properties of the targeted galaxies (e.g., star formation).
We discuss new Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopic observations of four luminous galaxies at z~7-9 selected to have intense optical line emission by Roberts-Borsani et al. (2016). Previous follow-up has revealed Lyman-alpha in two of the four galaxies. Our ne w MOSFIRE observations confirm that Lyman-alpha is present in the entire sample. We detect Lyman-alpha emission in COS-zs7-1, confirming its redshift as z=7.154, and we detect Lyman-alpha in EGS-zs8-2 at z=7.477, verifying a tentative detection presented in an earlier study. The ubiquity of Lyman-alpha in this sample is puzzling given that the IGM is likely significantly neutral over 7<z<9. To investigate this result in more detail, we have initiated a campaign to target UV metal emission in the four Lyman-alpha emitters as a probe of both the radiation field and the velocity offset of Lyman-alpha. Here we present the detection of intense CIII] emission in EGS-zs8-1, a galaxy from this sample previously shown to have Lyman-alpha at z=7.73. Photoionization models indicate that an intense radiation field and low metallicity are required to reproduce the intense CIII] and optical line emission. We argue that this extreme radiation field is likely to affect the local environment, increasing the transmission of Lyman-alpha through the galaxy. Moreover, the centroid of CIII] indicates that Lyman-alpha is redshifted from the systemic value by 340 km/s. This velocity offset is larger than that seen in less luminous systems, providing an additional explanation for the transmission of Lyman-alpha emission through the IGM. Since the transmission is further enhanced by the likelihood that such systems are also situated in the densest regions with the largest ionized bubbles, the visibility of Lyman-alpha at z>7 is expected to be strongly luminosity-dependent, with the most effective transmission occurring in systems with intense star formation.
We study the mean properties of a large representative sample of 217 galaxies showing CIII] emission at $2<z<4$, selected from a parent sample of $sim$750 main-sequence star-forming galaxies in the VANDELS survey. These CIII] emitters have a broad ra nge of UV luminosities, thus allowing a detailed stacking analysis to characterize their stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR) and stellar metallicity, as a function of the UV emission line ratios, EWs, and the carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) abundance ratio. Reliable CIII] detections represent $sim$30% of the parent sample. Extreme CIII] emitters (EW(CIII])$gtrsim$8r{A}) are exceedingly rare ($sim$3%) in VANDELS. The UV line ratios of the sample suggest no ionization source other than massive stars. Stacks with larger EW(CIII]) show larger EW(Ly$alpha$) and lower metallicity, but not all CIII] emitters are Ly$alpha$ emitters. The stellar metallicities of CIII] emitters are not significantly different from that of the parent sample, increasing from $sim$10% to $sim$40% solar for stellar masses $log$(M$_{star}$/M$_{odot})sim$9-10.5. The stellar mass-metallicity relation of the CIII] emitters is consistent with previous works showing strong evolution from $z=0$ to $zsim3$. The C/O abundances of the sample range 35%-150% solar, with a noticeable increase with FUV luminosity and a smooth decrease with the CIII] and Ly$alpha$ EWs. We discuss the CIII] emitters in the C/O-Fe/H and the C/O-O/H planes and find they follow stellar and nebular abundance trends consistent with those of Milky Way halo and thick disc stars and local HII galaxies, respectively. A qualitative agreement is also found with chemical evolution models, which suggests that CIII] emitters at $zsim$3 are experiencing an active phase of chemical enrichment.

We have obtained the first complete ultraviolet (UV) spectrum of a strong Lyman continuum(LyC) emitter at low redshift -- the compact, low-metallicity, star-forming galaxy J1154+2443 -- with a Lyman continuum escape fraction of 46% discovered recentl y. The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph spectrum shows strong Lya and CIII] 1909 emission, as well as OIII] 1666. Our observations show that strong LyC emitters can have UV emission lines with a high equivalent width (e.g. EW(CIII])$=11.7 pm 2.9 AA$ rest-frame), although their equivalent widths should be reduced due to the loss of ionizing photons. The intrinsic ionizing photon production efficiency of J1154+2443 is high, $log(xi_{rm ion}^0)=25.56$ erg$^{-1}$ Hz, comparable to that of other recently discovered $z sim 0.3-0.4$ LyC emitters. Combining our measurements and earlier determinations from the literature, we find a trend of increasing $xi_{rm ion}^0$ with increasing CIII] 1909 equivalent width, which can be understood by a combination of decreasing stellar population age and metallicity. Simple ionization and density-bounded photoionization models can explain the main observational features including the UV spectrum of J1154+2443.
