In this work we analyze the mean-square performance of different strategies for distributed estimation over least-mean-squares (LMS) adaptive networks. The results highlight some useful properties for distributed adaptation in comparison to fusion-based centralized solutions. The analysis establishes that, by optimizing over the combination weights, diffusion strategies can deliver lower excess-mean-square-error than centralized solutions employing traditional block or incremental LMS strategies. We first study in some detail the situation involving combinations of two adaptive agents and then extend the results to generic N-node ad-hoc networks. In the later case, we establish that, for sufficiently small step-sizes, diffusion strategies can outperform centralized block or incremental LMS strategies by optimizing over left-stochastic combination weighting matrices. The results suggest more efficient ways for organizing and processing data at fusion centers, and present useful adaptive strategies that are able to enhance performance when implemented in a distributed manner.

This paper presents an adaptive combination strategy for distributed learning over diffusion networks. Since learning relies on the collaborative processing of the stochastic information at the dispersed agents, the overall performance can be improve d by designing combination policies that adjust the weights according to the quality of the data. Such policies are important because they would add a new degree of freedom and endow multi-agent systems with the ability to control the flow of information over their edges for enhanced performance. Most adaptive and static policies available in the literature optimize certain performance metrics related to steady-state behavior, to the detriment of transient behavior. In contrast, we develop an adaptive combination rule that aims at optimizing the transient learning performance, while maintaining the enhanced steady-state performance obtained using policies previously developed in the literature.

The performance limits of scalar coding for multiple-input single-output channels are revisited in this work. By employing randomized beamforming, Narula et al. demonstrated that the loss of scalar coding is universally bounded by ~ 2.51 dB (or 0.833 bits/symbol) for any number of antennas and channel gains. In this work, by using randomized beamforming in conjunction with space-time codes, it is shown that the bound can be tightened to ~ 1.1 dB (or 0.39 bits/symbol).
In this paper, we consider the problem of optimally coordinating the response of a group of distributed energy resources (DERs) so they collectively meet the electric power demanded by a collection of loads, while minimizing the total generation cost and respecting the DER capacity limits. This problem can be cast as a convex optimization problem, where the global objective is to minimize a sum of convex functions corresponding to individual DER generation cost, while satisfying (i) linear inequality constraints corresponding to the DER capacity limits and (ii) a linear equality constraint corresponding to the total power generated by the DERs being equal to the total power demand. We develop distributed algorithms to solve the DER coordination problem over time-varying communication networks with either bidirectional or unidirectional communication links. The proposed algorithms can be seen as distribute
Although state estimation in networked control systems is a fundamental problem, few efforts have been made to study distributed state estimation via multiple access channels (MACs). In this article, we give a characterization of the zero-error capac ity region of an M-input, single-output MAC at any finite block-length. To this end, nonstochastic information-theoretic tools are used to derive the converse and achievability proofs. Next, a tight condition to be able to achieve uniformly bounded state estimation errors over such a MAC is provided. The obtained condition establishes a connection between the intrinsic topological entropies of the linear systems and the zero-error capacity region of the MAC.
Redundant storage maintains the performance of distributed systems under various forms of uncertainty. This paper considers the uncertainty in node access and download service. We consider two access models under two download service models. In one a ccess model, a user can access each node with a fixed probability, and in the other, a user can access a random fixed-size subset of nodes. We consider two download service models. In the first (small file) model, the randomness associated with the file size is negligible. In the second (large file) model, randomness is associated with both the file size and the systems operations. We focus on the service rate of the system. For a fixed redundancy level, the systems service rate is determined by the allocation of coded chunks over the storage nodes. We consider quasi-uniform allocations, where coded content is uniformly spread among a subset of nodes. The question we address asks what the size of this subset (spreading) should be. We show that in the small file model, concentrating the coded content to a minimum-size subset is universally optimal. For the large file model, the optimal spreading depends on the system parameters. These conclusions hold for both access models.
