It is well known that oscillations at the electron plasma frequency may appear due to instability of the plasma sheath near a positively biased electrode immersed in plasma. This instability is caused by transit-time effects when electrons, collected by this electrode, pass through the sheath. Such oscillations appear as low-power short spikes due to additional ionization of a neutral gas in the electrode vicinity. Herein we present first results obtained when the additional ionization was eliminated. We succeeded to prolong the oscillations during the whole time a positive bias was applied to the electrode. These oscillations could be obtained at much higher frequency than previously reported (tens of GHz compared to few hundreds of MHz) and power of tens of mW. These results in combination with presented theoretical estimations may be useful, e.g., for plasma diagnostics.

Microwave sheath-Voltage combination Plasma (MVP) is a high density plasma source and can be used as a suitable plasma processing device (e.g., ionized physical vapor deposition). In the present report, the temporal behavior of an argon MVP sustained along a direct-current biased Ti rod is investigated. Two plasma modes are observed, one is an oxidized state (OS) at the early time of the microwave plasma and the other is ionized sputter state (ISS) at the later times. Transition of the plasma from OS to ISS, results a prominent change in the visible color of the plasma, resulting from a significant increase in the plasma density, as measured by a Langmuir probe. In the OS, plasma is dominated by Ar ions and the density is order 10^11 cm^-3. In the ISS, metal ions from the Ti rod contribute significantly to the ion composition and higher density plasma (10^12 cm^-3) is produced. Nearly uniform high density plasma along the length of the Ti rod is produced at very low input microwave powers (around 30 W). Optical emission spectroscopy measurements confirm the presence of sputtered Ti ions and Ti neutrals in the ISS.
The production of weakly relativistic plasma by microwave electric field with circular polarization has been studied. Electron distribution function obtained for this produced plasma and shown that it is non-equilibrium and anisotropic. It is shown t hat produced plasma accelerated on direction of propagation microwave electric field. The electron velocity on this direction strongly depends on electron origination phase during ionization and microwave electric field phase and it s amplitude. The dielectric tensor obtained for this plasma and the weibel instability studied for it.
Inactivation of microorganisms on sensitive surfaces by cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is one major application in the field of plasma medicine because it provides a simple and effective way to sterilize heat-sensitive materials. Therefore, one has to know whether plasma treatment affects the treated surfaces, and thus causes long-term surface modifications. In this contribution, the effect of cold atmospheric Surface Micro-Discharge (SMD) plasma on different materials and its sporicidal behavior was investigated. Hence, different material samples (stainless steel, different polymers and glass) were plasma-treated for 16 hours, simulating multiple plasma treatments using an SMD plasma device. Afterwards, the material samples were analyzed using surface analysis methods such as laser microscopy, contact angle measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the device was used to investigate the behavior of Bacillus atrophaeus endospores inoculated on material samples at different treatment times. The interaction results for plasma-treated endospores show, that a log reduction of the spore count between 4.3 and 6.2 can be achieved within 15 min of plasma treatment. Besides, the surface analysis revealed, that there were three different types of reactions the probed materials showed to plasma treatment, ranging from no changes to shifts of the materials free surface energies and oxidation. As a consequence, it should be taken into account that even though cold atmospheric plasma treatment is a non-thermal method to inactivate microorganisms on heatsensitive materials, it still affects surface properties of the treated materials. Therefore, the focus of future work must be a further classification of plasma-caused material modifications.
We present the first 3D particle-in-cell simulations of laser driven sheath-based ion acceleration in a kilotesla-level applied magnetic field. The applied magnetic field creates two distinct stages in the acceleration process associated with the tim e-evolving magnetization of the hot electron sheath and results in a focusing, magnetic field-directed ion source of multiple species with strongly enhanced energy and number. The benefits of adding the magnetic field are downplayed in 2D simulations, which strongly suggests the feasibility of observing magnetic field effects under experimentally relevant conditions.
We have investigated generation of magnetic fields associated with velocity shear between an unmagnetized relativistic jet and an unmagnetized sheath plasma. We have examined the strong magnetic fields generated by kinetic shear (Kelvin-Helmholtz) in stabilities. Compared to the previous studies using counter-streaming performed by Alves et al. (2012), the structure of KKHI of our jet-sheath configuration is slightly different even for the global evolution of the strong transverse magnetic field. In our simulations the major components of growing modes are the electric field $E_{rm z}$ and the magnetic field $B_{rm y}$. After the $B_{rm y}$ component is excited, an induced electric field $E_{rm x}$ becomes significant. However, other field components remain small. We find that the structure and growth rate of KKHI with mass ratios $m_{rm i}/m_{rm e} = 1836$ and $m_{rm i}/m_{rm e} = 20$ are similar. In our simulations saturation in the nonlinear stage is not as clear as in counter-streaming cases. The growth rate for a mildly-relativistic jet case ($gamma_{rm j} = 1.5$) is larger than for a relativistic jet case ($gamma_{rm j} = 15$).
