We consider singly-quantized vortex states in a condensate of 52Cr atoms in a pancake trap. We obtain the vortex solutions by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the rotating frame with no further approximations. The behavior of the condensate is studied under three different situations concerning the interactions: only s-wave, s-wave plus dipolar and only dipolar. The energy barrier for the nucleation of a vortex is calculated as a function of the vortex displacement from the rotation axis in the three cases. These results are compared to those obtained for contact interaction condensates in the Thomas-Fermi approximation, and to a pseudo-analytical model, showing this latter a very good agreement with the numerical calculation.

Engineering of synthetic magnetic flux in Bose-Einstein condensates [Lin et al., Nature {bf 462}, 628 (2009)] has prospects for attaining the high vortex densities necessary to emulate the fractional quantum Hall effect. We analytically establish the hydrodynamical behaviour of a condensate in a uniform synthetic magnetic field, including its density and velocity profile. Importantly, we find that the onset of vortex nucleation observed experimentally corresponds to a dynamical instability in the hydrodynamical solutions and reveal other routes to instability and anticipated vortex nucleation.
The knowledge of vortex nucleation barriers is crucial for applications of superconductors, such as single-photon detectors and superconductor-based qubits. Contrarily to the problem of finding energy minima and critical fields, there are no controll able methods to explore the energy landscape, identify saddle points, and compute associated barriers. Similar problems exist in high-energy physics where the saddle-point configurations are called sphalerons. Here, we present a generalization of the string method to gauge field theories, which allows the calculation of energy barriers in superconductors. We solve the problem of vortex nucleation, assessing the effects of the nonlinearity of the model, complicated geometry, surface roughness, and pinning.
We study the properties of singly-quantized linear vortices in the supersolid phase of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature modeling $^{164}$Dy atoms. The system is extended in the $x-y$ plane and confined by a harmonic trap in the the polarization direction $z$. Our study is based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We characterize the ground state of the system in terms of spatial order and superfluid fraction and compare the properties of a single vortex and of a vortex dipole in the superfluid phase (SFP) and in the supersolid phase (SSP). At variance with a vortex in the SFP, which is free to move in the superfluid, a vortex in the SSP is localized at the interstitial sites and does not move freely. We have computed the energy barrier for motion from an equilibrium site to another. The fact that the vortex is submitted to a periodic potential has a dramatic effect on the dynamics of a vortex dipole made of two counter rotating parallel vortices; instead of rigidly translating as in the SFP, the vortex and anti-vortex approach each other by a series of jumps from one site to another until they annihilate in a very short time and their energy is transferred to bulk excitations.
The behaviour of a harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with its dipole moments rotating at angular frequencies lower than the transverse harmonic trapping frequency is explored in the co-rotating frame. We obtain semi-analytical sol utions for the stationary states in the Thomas-Fermi limit of the corresponding dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation and utilise linear stability analysis to elucidate a phase diagram for the dynamical stability of these stationary solutions with respect to collective modes. These results are verified via direct numerical simulations of the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which demonstrate that dynamical instabilities of the co-rotating stationary solutions lead to the seeding of vortices that eventually relax into a triangular lattice configuration. Our results illustrate that rotation of the dipole polarization represents a new route to vortex formation in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.
Based on the two-dimensional mean-field equations for pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in a rotating frame with both attractive and repulsive dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) as well as arbitrary polarization angle, we study the profil es of the single vortex state and show how the critical rotational frequency change with the s-wave contact interaction strengths, DDI strengths and the polarization angles. In addition, we find numerically that at the `magic angle $vartheta=arccos(sqrt{3}/3)$, the critical rotational frequency is almost independent of the DDI strength. By numerically solving the dipolar GPE at high rotational speed, we identify different patterns of vortex lattices which strongly depend on the polarization direction. As a result, we undergo a study of vortex lattice structures for the whole regime of polarization direction and find evidence that the vortex lattice orientation tends to be aligned with the direction of the dipoles.
