In the Survivable Network Design problem (SNDP), we are given an undirected graph $G(V,E)$ with costs on edges, along with a connectivity requirement $r(u,v)$ for each pair $u,v$ of vertices. The goal is to find a minimum-cost subset $E^*$ of edges, that satisfies the given set of pairwise connectivity requirements. We present an extremely simple algorithm to achieve an $O(k^3 log n)$-approximation for this problem, where $k$ denotes the maximum connectivity requirement, and $n$ denotes the number of vertices. We also give a simple proof of the recently discovered $O(k^2 log n)$-approximation result for the single-source version of vertex-connectivity SNDP. We note that in both cases, our analysis in fact yields slightly better guarantees in that the $log n$ term in the approximation guarantee can be replaced with a $log tau$ term where $tau$ denotes the number of distinct vertices that participate in one or more pairs with a positive connectivity requirement.

In the Group Steiner Tree problem (GST), we are given a (vertex or edge)-weighted graph $G=(V,E)$ on $n$ vertices, a root vertex $r$ and a collection of groups ${S_i}_{iin[h]}: S_isubseteq V(G)$. The goal is to find a min-cost subgraph $H$ that conne cts the root to every group. We consider a fault-tolerant variant of GST, which we call Restricted (Rooted) Group SNDP. In this setting, each group $S_i$ has a demand $k_iin[k],kinmathbb N$, and we wish to find a min-cost $Hsubseteq G$ such that, for each group $S_i$, there is a vertex in $S_i$ connected to the root via $k_i$ (vertex or edge) disjoint paths. While GST admits $O(log^2 nlog h)$ approximation, its high connectivity variants are Label-Cover hard, and for the vertex-weighted version, the hardness holds even when $k=2$. Previously, positive results were known only for the edge-weighted version when $k=2$ [Gupta et al., SODA 2010; Khandekar et al., Theor. Comput. Sci., 2012] and for a relaxed variant where the disjoint paths may end at different vertices in a group [Chalermsook et al., SODA 2015]. Our main result is an $O(log nlog h)$ approximation for Restricted Group SNDP that runs in time $n^{f(k, w)}$, where $w$ is the treewidth of $G$. This nearly matches the lower bound when $k$ and $w$ are constant. The key to achieving this result is a non-trivial extension of the framework in [Chalermsook et al., SODA 2017], which embeds all feasible solutions to the problem into a dynamic program (DP) table. However, finding the optimal solution in the DP table remains intractable. We formulate a linear program relaxation for the DP and obtain an approximate solution via randomized rounding. This framework also allows us to systematically construct DP tables for high-connectivity problems. As a result, we present new exact algorithms for several variants of survivable network design problems in low-treewidth graphs.
This study considers the (soft) capacitated vertex cover problem in a dynamic setting. This problem generalizes the dynamic model of the vertex cover problem, which has been intensively studied in recent years. Given a dynamically changing vertex-wei ghted graph $G=(V,E)$, which allows edge insertions and edge deletions, the goal is to design a data structure that maintains an approximate minimum vertex cover while satisfying the capacity constraint of each vertex. That is, when picking a copy of a vertex $v$ in the cover, the number of $v$s incident edges covered by the copy is up to a given capacity of $v$. We extend Bhattacharya et al.s work [SODA15 and ICALP15] to obtain a deterministic primal-dual algorithm for maintaining a constant-factor approximate minimum capacitated vertex cover with $O(log n / epsilon)$ amortized update time, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph. The algorithm can be extended to (1) a more general model in which each edge is associated with a nonuniform and unsplittable demand, and (2) the more general capacitated set cover problem.
Tree comparison metrics have proven to be an invaluable aide in the reconstruction and analysis of phylogenetic (evolutionary) trees. The path-length distance between trees is a particularly attractive measure as it reflects differences in tree shape as well as differences between branch lengths. This paper considers the online machine minimization problem, a basic real time scheduling problem. The setting for this problem consists of n jobs that arrive over time, where each job has a deadline by which it must be completed. The goal is to des ign an online scheduler that feasibly schedules the jobs on a nearly minimal number of machines. An algorithm is c-machine optimal if the algorithm will feasibly schedule a collection of jobs on cm machines if there exists a feasible schedule on m machines. For over two decades the best known result was a O(log P)-machine optimal algorithm, where P is the ratio of the maximum to minimum job size. In a recent breakthrough, a O(log m)-machine optimal algorithm was given. In this paper, we exponentially improve on this recent result by giving a O(log log m)-machine optimal algorithm.
In population protocols, the underlying distributed network consists of $n$ nodes (or agents), denoted by $V$, and a scheduler that continuously selects uniformly random pairs of nodes to interact. When two nodes interact, their states are updated by applying a state transition function that depends only on the states of the two nodes prior to the interaction. The efficiency of a population protocol is measured in terms of both time (which is the number of interactions until the nodes collectively have a valid output) and the number of possible states of nodes used by the protocol. By convention, we consider the parallel time cost, which is the time divided by $n$. In this paper we consider the majority problem, where each node receives as input a color that is either black or white, and the goal is to have all of the nodes output the color that is the majority of the input colors. We design a population protocol that solves the majority problem in $O(log^{3/2}n)$ parallel time, both with high probability and in expectation, while using $O(log n)$ states. Our protocol improves on a recent protocol of Berenbrink et al. that runs in $O(log^{5/3}n)$ parallel time, both with high probability and in expectation, using $O(log n)$ states.
