Starting from the well-known field theory for directed percolation, we describe an evolving population, near extinction, in an environment with its own nontrivial spatio-temporal dynamics. Here, we consider the special case where the environment follows a simple relaxational (Model A) dynamics. Two new operators emerge, with upper critical dimension of four, which couple the two theories in a nontrivial way. While the Wilson-Fisher fixed point remains completely unaffected, a mismatch of time scales destabilizes the usual DP fixed point, suggesting a crossover to a first order transition from the active (surviving) to the inactive (extinct) state.

We develop a novel method of replica-exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulation, mass-scaling REMD (MSREMD) method, which improves trajectory accuracy at high temperatures, and thereby contributes to numerical stability. In addition, the MSREMD me thod can also simplify a replica-exchange routine by eliminating velocity scaling. As a pilot system, a Lennard-Jones fluid is simulated with the new method. The results show that the MSREMD method improves the trajectory accuracy at high temperatures compared with the conventional REMD method. We analytically demonstrate that the MSREMD simulations can reproduce completely the same trajectories of the conventional REMD ones with shorter time steps at high temperatures in case of the Nose-Hoover thermostats. Accordingly, we can easily compare the computational costs of the REMD and MSREMD simulations. We conclude that the MSREMD method decreases the instability and optimizes the computational resources with simpler algorithm under the constant trajectory accuracy at all temperatures.
We put forward a general field theory for membranes with embedded activators and analyse their critical properties using renormalization group techniques. Depending on the membrane-activator coupling, we find a crossover between acoustic and diffusiv e scaling regimes, with mean-field dynamical critical exponents z = 1 and 2 respectively. We argue that the acoustic scaling, which is exact in all spatial dimensions, is a suitable candidate for the universal description of the spatiotemporal patterns observed at the leading edge of motile cells. Furthermore, one-loop corrections to the diffusive mean-field exponents reveal universal behaviour distinct from the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling of passive interfaces and signs of strong-coupling behaviour.
The recently developed formalism of nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics (NLFH) has been instrumental in unraveling many new dynamical universality classes in coupled driven systems with multiple conserved quantities. In principle, this formalism requ ires knowledge of the exact expression of locally conserved current in terms of local density of the conserved components. However, for most nonequilibrium systems an exact expression is not available and it is important to know what happens to the predictions of NLFH in these cases. We address this question for the first time here in a system with coupled time evolution of sliding particles on a fluctuating energy landscape. In the disordered phase this system shows short-ranged correlations, this system shows short-ranged correlations, the exact form of which is not known, and so the exact expression for current cannot be obtained. We use approximate expressions based on mean-field theory and corrections to it, to test the prediction of NLFH using numerical simulations. In this process we also discover important finite size effects and show how they affect the predictions of NLFH. We find that our system is rich enough to show a large variety of universality classes. From our analytics and simulations we have been able to find parameter values which lead to diffusive, Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ), $5/3 $ Levy and modified KPZ universality classes. Interestingly, the scaling function in the modified KPZ case turns out to be close to the Prahofer-Spohn function which is known to describe usual KPZ scaling. Our analytics also predict the golden mean and the $3/2$ Levy universality classes within our model but our simulations could not verify this, perhaps due to strong finite size effects.
We analyze the nonlinear relaxation of a complex ecosystem composed of many interacting species. The ecological system is described by generalized Lotka-Volterra equations with a multiplicative noise. The transient dynamics is studied in the framewor k of the mean field theory and with random interaction between the species. We focus on the statistical properties of the asymptotic behaviour of the time integral of the i-th population and on the distribution of the population and of the local field.
Finite heat reservoir capacity and temperature fluctuations lead to modification of the well known canonical exponential weight factor. Requiring that the corrections least depend on the one-particle energy, we derive a deformed entropy, K(S). The re sulting formula contains the Boltzmann-Gibbs, the Renyi and the Tsallis formulas as particular cases. For extreme large fluctuations (compared to the Gaussian case) a new, parameter-free entropy - probability relation emerges. This formula and the corresponding canonical equilibrium distribution are nearly Boltzmannian for high probability, but deviate from the classical result for low probability. In the extreme large fluctuation limit the canonical distribution resembles for low probability the cumulative Gompertz distribution.
