Hypergraphs have been becoming a popular choice to model complex, non-pairwise, and higher-order interactions for recommender system. However, compared with traditional graph-based methods, the constructed hypergraphs are usually much sparser, which leads to a dilemma when balancing the benefits of hypergraphs and the modelling difficulty. Moreover, existing sequential hypergraph recommendation overlooks the temporal modelling among user relationships, which neglects rich social signals from the recommendation data. To tackle the above shortcomings of the existing hypergraph-based sequential recommendations, we propose a novel architecture named Hyperbolic Hypergraph representation learning method for Sequential Recommendation (H2SeqRec) with pre-training phase. Specifically, we design three self-supervised tasks to obtain the pre-training item embeddings to feed or fuse into the following recommendation architecture (with two ways to use the pre-trained embeddings). In the recommendation phase, we learn multi-scale item embeddings via a hierarchical structure to capture multiple time-span information. To alleviate the negative impact of sparse hypergraphs, we utilize a hyperbolic space-based hypergraph convolutional neural network to learn the dynamic item embeddings. Also, we design an item enhancement module to capture dynamic social information at each timestamp to improve effectiveness. Extensive experiments are conducted on two real-world datasets to prove the effectiveness and high performance of the model.

Solving semiparametric models can be computationally challenging because the dimension of parameter space may grow large with increasing sample size. Classical Newtons method becomes quite slow and unstable with intensive calculation of the large Hes sian matrix and its inverse. Iterative methods separately update parameters for finite dimensional component and infinite dimensional component have been developed to speed up single iteration, but they often take more steps until convergence or even sometimes sacrifice estimation precision due to sub-optimal update direction. We propose a computationally efficient implicit profiling algorithm that achieves simultaneously the fast iteration step in iterative methods and the optimal update direction in the Newtons method by profiling out the infinite dimensional component as the function of the finite dimensional component. We devise a first order approximation when the profiling function has no explicit analytical form. We show that our implicit profiling method always solve any local quadratic programming problem in two steps. In two numerical experiments under semiparametric transformation models and GARCH-M models, we demonstrated the computational efficiency and statistical precision of our implicit profiling method.
Transformers can generate predictions in two approaches: 1. auto-regressively by conditioning each sequence element on the previous ones, or 2. directly produce an output sequences in parallel. While research has mostly explored upon this difference on sequential tasks in NLP, we study the difference between auto-regressive and parallel prediction on visual set prediction tasks, and in particular on polygonal shapes in images because polygons are representative of numerous types of objects, such as buildings or obstacles for aerial vehicles. This is challenging for deep learning architectures as a polygon can consist of a varying carnality of points. We provide evidence on the importance of natural orders for Transformers, and show the benefit of decomposing complex polygons into collections of points in an auto-regressive manner.

Semantic change detection (SCD) extends the multi-class change detection (MCD) task to provide not only the change locations but also the detailed land-cover/land-use (LCLU) categories before and after the observation intervals. This fine-grained sem antic change information is very useful in many applications. Recent studies indicate that the SCD can be modeled through a triple-branch Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which contains two temporal branches and a change branch. However, in this architecture, the communications between the temporal branches and the change branch are insufficient. To overcome the limitations in existing methods, we propose a novel CNN architecture for the SCD, where the semantic temporal features are merged in a deep CD unit. Furthermore, we elaborate on this architecture to reason the bi-temporal semantic correlations. The resulting Bi-temporal Semantic Reasoning Network (Bi-SRNet) contains two types of semantic reasoning blocks to reason both single-temporal and cross-temporal semantic correlations, as well as a novel loss function to improve the semantic consistency of change detection results. Experimental results on a benchmark dataset show that the proposed architecture obtains significant accuracy improvements over the existing approaches, while the added designs in the Bi-SRNet further improves the segmentation of both semantic categories and the changed areas. For a finite subset $A$ of $mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, Lazar and Wachs (2019) conjectured that the number of cycles on $A$ with only even-odd drops is equal to the number of D-cycles on $A$. In this note, we introduce cycles on a multiset with only even-odd dr ops and prove bijectively a multiset version of their conjecture. As a consequence, the number of cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops equals the Genocchi number $g_n$. With Laguerre histories as an intermediate structure, we also construct a bijection between a class of permutations of length $2n-1$ known to be counted by $g_n$ invented by Dumont and the cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops.
In fringe projection profilometry, the high-order harmonics information of non-sinusoidal fringes will lead to errors in the phase estimation. In order to solve this problem, a point-wise posterior phase estimation (PWPPE) method based on deep learni ng technique is proposed in this paper. The complex nonlinear mapping relationship between the multiple gray values and the sine / cosine value of the phase is constructed by using the feedforward neural network model. After the model training, it can estimate the phase values of each pixel location, and the accuracy is higher than the point-wise least-square (PWLS) method. To further verify the effectiveness of this method, a face mask is measured, the traditional PWLS method and the proposed PWPPE method are employed, respectively. The comparison results show that the traditional method is with periodic phase errors, while the proposed PWPPE method can effectively eliminate such phase errors caused by non-sinusoidal fringes.

Helium is the second most abundant element in the universe, and together with silica, they are major components of giant planets. Exploring the reactivity and state of helium and silica under high pressure is of fundamental importance for developing and understanding of the evolution and internal structure of giant planets. Here, using first-principles calculations and crystal structure predictions, we identify four stable phases of a helium-silica compound with seven/eight-coordinated silicon atoms at pressure range of 600-4000 GPa, corresponding to the interior condition of the outer planets in the solar system. The density of HeSiO2 agrees with current structure models of the planets. This helium-silica compound exhibits a superionic-like helium diffusive state at the high pressure and high temperature conditions along the isentropes of Saturn, a metallic fluid state in Jupiter, and a solid state in the deep interiors of Uranus and Neptune. The reaction of helium and silica may lead to the erosion of the rocky core of giant planets and form a diluted core region. These results highlight the reactivity of helium under high pressure to form new compounds, and also provides evidence to help build more sophisticated interior models of giant planets.
Supernumerary Robotics Device (SRD) is an ideal solution to provide robotic assistance in overhead manual manipulation. Since two arms are occupied for the overhead task, it is desired to have additional arms to assist us in achieving other subtasks such as supporting the far end of a long plate and pushing it upward to fit in the ceiling. In this study, a method that maps human muscle force to SRD for overhead task assistance is proposed. Our methodology is to utilize redundant DoFs such as the idle muscles in the leg to control the supporting force of the SRD. A sEMG device is worn on the operators shank where muscle signals are measured, parsed, and transmitted to SRD for control. In the control aspect, we adopted stiffness control in the task space based on torque control at the joint level. We are motivated by the fact that humans can achieve daily manipulation merely through simple inherent compliance property in joint driven by muscles. We explore to estimate the force of some particular muscles in humans and control the SRD to imitate the behaviors of muscle and output supporting forces to accomplish the subtasks such as overhead supporting. The sEMG signals detected from human muscles are extracted, filtered, rectified, and parsed to estimate the muscle force. We use this force information as the intent of the operator for proper overhead supporting force. As one of the well-known compliance control methods, stiffness control is easy to achieve using a few of straightforward parameters such as stiffness and equilibrium point. Through tuning the stiffness and equilibrium point, the supporting force of SRD in task space can be easily controlled. The muscle force estimated by sEMG is mapped to the desired force in the task space of the SRD. The desired force is transferred into stiffness or equilibrium point to output the corresponding supporting force.
Deep neural networks have significantly improved appearance-based gaze estimation accuracy. However, it still suffers from unsatisfactory performance when generalizing the trained model to new domains, e.g., unseen environments or persons. In this pa per, we propose a plug-and-play gaze adaptation framework (PnP-GA), which is an ensemble of networks that learn collaboratively with the guidance of outliers. Since our proposed framework does not require ground-truth labels in the target domain, the existing gaze estimation networks can be directly plugged into PnP-GA and generalize the algorithms to new domains. We test PnP-GA on four gaze domain adaptation tasks, ETH-to-MPII, ETH-to-EyeDiap, Gaze360-to-MPII, and Gaze360-to-EyeDiap. The experimental results demonstrate that the PnP-GA framework achieves considerable performance improvements of 36.9%, 31.6%, 19.4%, and 11.8% over the baseline system. The proposed framework also outperforms the state-of-the-art domain adaptation approaches on gaze domain adaptation tasks.

Silica, water and hydrogen are known to be the major components of celestial bodies, and have significant influence on the formation and evolution of giant planets, such as Uranus and Neptune. Thus, it is of fundamental importance to investigate thei r states and possible reactions under the planetary conditions. Here, using advanced crystal structure searches and first-principles calculations in the Si-O-H system, we find that a silica-water compound (SiO2)2(H2O) and a silica-hydrogen compound SiO2H2 can exist under high pressures above 450 and 650 GPa, respectively. Further simulations reveal that, at high pressure and high temperature conditions corresponding to the interiors of Uranus and Neptune, these compounds exhibit superionic behavior, in which protons diffuse freely like liquid while the silicon and oxygen framework is fixed as solid. Therefore, these superionic silica-water and silica-hydrogen compounds could be regarded as important components of the deep mantle or core of giants, which also provides an alternative origin for their anomalous magnetic fields. These unexpected physical and chemical properties of the most common natural materials at high pressure offer key clues to understand some abstruse issues including demixing and erosion of the core in giant planets, and shed light on building reliable models for solar giants and exoplanets.
