Most of the prior studies in the spatial ac{DoA} domain focus on a single modality. However, humans use auditory and visual senses to detect the presence of sound sources. With this motivation, we propose to use neural networks with audio and visual signals for multi-speaker localization. The use of heterogeneous sensors can provide complementary information to overcome uni-modal challenges, such as noise, reverberation, illumination variations, and occlusions. We attempt to address these issues by introducing an adaptive weighting mechanism for audio-visual fusion. We also propose a novel video simulation method that generates visual features from noisy target 3D annotations that are synchronized with acoustic features. Experimental results confirm that audio-visual fusion consistently improves the performance of speaker DoA estimation, while the adaptive weighting mechanism shows clear benefits.
Speech separation aims to separate individual voice from an audio mixture of multiple simultaneous talkers. Although audio-only approaches achieve satisfactory performance, they build on a strategy to handle the predefined conditions, limiting their application in the complex auditory scene. Towards the cocktail party problem, we propose a novel audio-visual speech separation model. In our model, we use the face detector to detect the number of speakers in the scene and use visual information to avoid the permutation problem. To improve our models generalization ability to unknown speakers, we extract speech-related visual features from visual inputs explicitly by the adversarially disentangled method, and use this feature to assist speech separation. Besides, the time-domain approach is adopted, which could avoid the phase reconstruction problem existing in the time-frequency domain models. To compare our models performance with other models, we create two benchmark datasets of 2-speaker mixture from GRID and TCDTIMIT audio-visual datasets. Through a series of experiments, our proposed model is shown to outperform the state-of-the-art audio-only model and three audio-visual models.
As we interact with the world, for example when we communicate with our colleagues in a large open space or meeting room, we continuously analyse the surrounding environment and, in particular, localise and recognise acoustic events. While we largely take such abilities for granted, they represent a challenging problem for current robots or smart voice assistants as they can be easily fooled by high degree of sound interference in acoustically complex environments. Preventing such failures when using solely audio data is challenging, if not impossible since the algorithms need to take into account wider context and often understand the scene on a semantic level. In this paper, we propose what to our knowledge is the first multi-modal direction of arrival (DoA) of sound, which uses static visual spatial prior providing an auxiliary information about the environment to suppress some of the false DoA detections. We validate our approach on a newly collected real-world dataset, and show that our approach consistently improves over classic DoA baselines
Although speaker verification has conventionally been an audio-only task, some practical applications provide both audio and visual streams of input. In these cases, the visual stream provides complementary information and can often be leveraged in conjunction with the acoustics of speech to improve verification performance. In this study, we explore audio-visual approaches to speaker verification, starting with standard fusion techniques to learn joint audio-visual (AV) embeddings, and then propose a novel approach to handle cross-modal verification at test time. Specifically, we investigate unimodal and concatenation based AV fusion and report the lowest AV equal error rate (EER) of 0.7% on the VoxCeleb1 dataset using our best system. As these methods lack the ability to do cross-modal verification, we introduce a multi-view model which uses a shared classifier to map audio and video into the same space. This new approach achieves 28% EER on VoxCeleb1 in the challenging testing condition of cross-modal verification.
This paper introduces GigaSpeech, an evolving, multi-domain English speech recognition corpus with 10,000 hours of high quality labeled audio suitable for supervised training, and 40,000 hours of total audio suitable for semi-supervised and unsupervised training. Around 40,000 hours of transcribed audio is first collected from audiobooks, podcasts and YouTube, covering both read and spontaneous speaking styles, and a variety of topics, such as arts, science, sports, etc. A new forced alignment and segmentation pipeline is proposed to create sentence segments suitable for speech recognition training, and to filter out segments with low-quality transcription. For system training, GigaSpeech provides five subsets of different sizes, 10h, 250h, 1000h, 2500h, and 10000h. For our 10,000-hour XL training subset, we cap the word error rate at 4% during the filtering/validation stage, and for all our other smaller training subsets, we cap it at 0%. The DEV and TEST evaluation sets, on the other hand, are re-processed by professional human transcribers to ensure high transcription quality. Baseline systems are provided for popular speech recognition toolkits, namely Athena, ESPnet, Kaldi and Pika.
Variational auto-encoders (VAEs) are deep generative latent variable models that can be used for learning the distribution of complex data. VAEs have been successfully used to learn a probabilistic prior over speech signals, which is then used to perform speech enhancement. One advantage of this generative approach is that it does not require pairs of clean and noisy speech signals at training. In this paper, we propose audio-visual variants of VAEs for single-channel and speaker-independent speech enhancement. We develop a conditional VAE (CVAE) where the audio speech generative process is conditioned on visual information of the lip region. At test time, the audio-visual speech generative model is combined with a noise model based on nonnegative matrix factorization, and speech enhancement relies on a Monte Carlo expectation-maximization algorithm. Experiments are conducted with the recently published NTCD-TIMIT dataset as well as the GRID corpus. The results confirm that the proposed audio-visual CVAE effectively fuses audio and visual information, and it improves the speech enhancement performance compared with the audio-only VAE model, especially when the speech signal is highly corrupted by noise. We also show that the proposed unsupervised audio-visual speech enhancement approach outperforms a state-of-the-art supervised deep learning method.
