Since it is undesirable to require an external magnetic field for on-chip memory applications, we investigate the use of a Rashba effective field alternatively for assisting the electric-field-induced switching operation of a three terminal perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (pMTJ). By conducting macro-spin simulation, we show that a pMTJ with thermal stability of 61 can be switched in 0.5 ns consuming a switching energy of 6 fJ, and the voltage operation margin can be improved to 0.8 ns. Furthermore, the results also demonstrate that a heavy metal system that can provide large field-like torque rather than damping-like torque is favored for the switching.

We investigate theoretically the switching characteristics of semiconducting carbon nanotubes connected to gold electrodes under an external (gate) electric field. We find that the external introduction of holes is necessary to account for the experimental observations. We identify metal-induced-gap states (MIGS) at the contacts and find that the MIGS of an undoped tube would not significantly affect the switching behavior, even for very short tube lengths. We also explore the miniaturization limits of nanotube transistors, and, on the basis of their switching ratio, we conclude that transistors with channels as short as 50AA would have adequate switching characteristics.
Weyl semimetals in a magnetic field give rise to interesting non-local electronic orbits: the ballistic transport through the bulk enabled by the chiral Landau levels is combined with a momentum-space sliding along the surface Fermi-arc driven by the Lorentz force. Bulk chiral Landau levels can also be induced by axial fields whose sign depends on the chirality of the Weyl point. However, the microscopic perturbations that give rise to them can be described in terms of gauge fields only in the low-energy sectors around the Weyl points. In addition, since pseudo-fields are intrinsic, there is no apparent reason for a Lorentz force that causes sliding along the Fermi-arcs. Therefore, the existence of non-local orbits driven exclusively by pseudo-fields is not obvious. Here, we show that for systems with at least four Weyl points in the bulk spectrum, non-local orbits can be induced by axial fields alone. We discuss the underlying mechanisms by a combination of analytical semi-classical theory, the microscopic numerical study of wave-packet dynamics, and a surface Greens function analysis.
We present a new model of plasma-condensate system, by taking into account an anisotropy of transference reactions of adatoms between neighbor layers of multi-layer system, caused by the strength of the electric field near substrate. We discuss an influence of the strength of the electric field onto first-order phase transitions and conditions for adsorbate patterning in plasma-condensate systems. It is shown that separated pyramidal-like multi-layer adsorbate islands can be formed in the plasma-condensate system if the strength of the electric field near substrate becomes larger tan the critical value, which depends on the interaction energy of adsorbate and adsorption coefficient.

The processional switching mechanism governs magnetic switching in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) in the sub-nanosecond range, which limits the application of spin transfer torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) in the ultrafast region. In this paper, we propose a new picosecond magnetic switching mechanism in a synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) structure using the adjustable Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction controlled by an external electric field (E-field). It is shown that along with the sign change of the RKKY interaction in the SAF structure with an external E-field, the critical switching current density can be significantly reduced by one order of magnitude compared to that of a normal MTJ design at 100 ps; thus, this novel STT-MRAM can be written with a very low switching current density to avoid the MTJ breakdown problem and reduce the writing energy. To understand the physical origin of this abnormal phenomenon, a toy model is proposed in which the external-E-field-controlled sign change of the RKKY interaction in the SAF structure provides an extra contribution to the total energy that helps thespins overcome the energy barrier and break the processional switching mechanism.
Electric field control of magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnets has been intensively pursued in spintronics to achieve efficient memory and computing devices with low energy consumption. Compared with ferromagnets, antiferromagnets hold huge potential in high-density information storage for their ultrafast spin dynamics and vanishingly small stray field. However, the switching of magnetic anisotropy of antiferromagnets via electric field remains elusive. Here we use ferroelastic strain from piezoelectric materials to switch the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and the Neel order reversibly in antiferromagnetic Mn2Au films with an electric field of only a few kV/cm at room temperature. Owing to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, a ratchet-like switching behavior driven by the Neel spin-orbit torque is observed in the Mn2Au, which can be reversed by electric fields.
