The research aims to assess the water quality of Alkaber Alshemaly River through field and laboratory study included identifying each of the following variables: dissolved oxygen (DO), carbonic biochemical oxygen demand(CBOD), and the river temperature, electrical conductivity (Cond). We have also modeled two important water-quality variables (DO and BOD) using QUAL2K river and stream surface water-quality model. The studied part of the river is an area located between 16 October dam and Alegnsa, where we have five sampling sites. The field and laboratory study showed increase in D.O values to reach the highest values in the months of March, April, January and February, and the lowest values were recorded in the months of July, August, September in all sampling sites. As a final result all D.O values in all locations were higher than the minimum allowable 5 mg/l. For CBOD5 the highest values were recorded in the months of June, July and August, and the lowest values were recorded in the months of March, December, and January at all of the sites studied. In the case of D.O and CBOD, the research showed a good correspondence between the model results and field values in the months of March, January, and November, but the correspondence was relatively less in August. In general, the study showed the possibility to use the QUAL2K model to simulate rivers-water quality in Syria.

This study deals with the determination of total mercury concentration in the water taken from three sites on Al-Kabeer Al-Shemaly River ( near the industrial area and Al- Damat Lake, and 16 Tishreen Lake), also the effect of some physio-chemical p arameters including: DO, pH, T °C. of water in the three sites was studied. Results showed that the total mercury concentration was low in general, where the medium concentration in the three studied sites was 0.29 ppb and it was less than the permission level of total mercury in the surface water(> 10 ppb), the higher value of the medium concentration of total mercury(0.35, 0.31, 0.21)ppb was recorded in the Industrial Area, Damat Lake, then 16 Tishreen Lake, respectively. For the changes in the total concentration of mercury in the three studied sites during seasons of a year, was higher in Summer comparing with other seasons. The results showed positive correlation coefficient between the total mercury concentration and temperature, pH value, but it was negative with DO in Summer.
Al-Kabeer Al-Shemale river rises from Aqraa Mountain and coastal mountains, it is considered one of the largest rivers in the coastal area. Its catchment area is 1097 km2, and empties into the sea to the southern of Lattakia. The study aims to determin e the impact of climate change on the river discharge. Since the rainfall is the major factor in the runoff formation in the river catchment, the rainfall changes have been studied in climatic stations located within the catchment and its surroundings, and for a period of time exceeding thirty years. The study found that the general trend of rainfall change and runoff with time is decreasing, declining rainfall values ranged in the studied stations between (0.4-12.5) mm per year, and the runoff reached 0.08m3/s in the year. A mathematical equation, predict river discharge after knowing the values of daily precipitation, has been concluded.
Al-Kabeer River Coastal Plain faces very important economic activities which lead to growing water demands. This research aims to define the relationship between rainfall and subterranean-water levels. In the mountainous area fissured marl and limest one with high permeability spread. However, on the coastal plateau deposits with moderate to low permeability values spread, and water levels quickly respond to rainfall and irrigation water, which makes it get easily polluted and affected by climatic factors. Analyses and discussions of field data have led to the fact that subterranean-water levels are to do with many natural and artificial interrelated parameters. And in some cases, they can be adversely oriented, and difficult to isolate and monitor separately, and become very difficult to derive mathematical formula for describing the relationship between just two parameters (subterranean-water percentages and rainfall levels)
This research discusses the way of defining hydogeological parameters by using monitored data of the ground water system, for defining the values of these coefficients on large areas, which has a practical significance especially in modeling the hy drogeological problems which allows explaining and checking the hydrodynamic and the hydrogeological structures of the area and the reasons of changing the filteration properties of the aquifer. It appears that transmissivity varied from 36 to 570 m2/day, the permeability from 1 to 53 m/day, and the water yield from low to medium between 0.00004 and 0.2 because of the rising of the coefficient of diffusion. The filtration recharge approximately from 1 - 40% from the rain falls. The obtained results are in good conformity with the geological characteristics - structural and litologic - facies characteristics for the study area.
Modelling the relationship between drinking water turbidity and other indicators of water quality in Al-Sin drinking water purification plant using Dynamic Artificial neural networks could help in the implementation of the stabilization for the per formance of the plant because these neural networks provide efficient tool to deal with the complex, dynamic and non-linear nature of purification processes. They have the ability to response to various instant changes in parameters influencing water purification. In this research, four models of feed-forward back-propagation dynamic neural network were designed to predict the effluent turbidity from Al-Sin drinking water purification plant. The models were built based on turbidity, pH and conductivity of raw water data while the effluent turbidity data were used for verify the performance accuracy of each network. The results of this research confirm the ability of dynamic neural networks in modeling and simulating the non-linearity behavior of water turbidity as well as to predict its values. They can be used in Al-Sin drinking water purification plant in order to achieve the stabilization of its performance.
