Nowadays many software development frameworks implement Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) as a mean of automating the test of interactive systems under construction. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) provides an important capability for managing the complexities of system development. MBSE empowers the formalisms of system architectures for supporting model-based requirement elicitation, specification, design, development, testing, fielding, etc. However, the modeling languages and techniques are quite heterogeneous, even within the same enterprise system, which creates difficulties for data interoperability. The discrepancies among data structures and language syntaxes make information exchange among MBSE models even more difficult, resulting in considerable information deviations when connecting data flows across the enterprise. For this reason, this paper presents an ontology based upon graphs, objects, points, properties, roles, and relationships with entensions (GOPPRRE), providing meta models that support the various lifecycle stages of MBSE formalisms. In particular, knowledge-graph models are developed to support unified model representations to further implement ontological data integration based on GOPPRRE throughout the entire lifecycle. The applicability of the MBSE formalism is verified using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Moreover, the GOPPRRE ontologies are generated from the MBSE language formalisms in a domain-specific modeling tool, textit{MetaGraph} in order to evaluate its availiablity. The results demonstrate that the proposed ontology supports both formal structures and the descriptive logic of the systems engineering lifecycle.
Rehabilitation assessment is critical to determine an adequate intervention for a patient. However, the current practices of assessment mainly rely on therapists experience, and assessment is infrequently executed due to the limited availability of a therapist. In this paper, we identified the needs of therapists to assess patients functional abilities (e.g. alternative perspective on assessment with quantitative information on patients exercise motions). As a result, we developed an intelligent decision support system that can identify salient features of assessment using reinforcement learning to assess the quality of motion and summarize patient specific analysis. We evaluated this system with seven therapists using the dataset from 15 patient performing three exercises. The evaluation demonstrates that our system is preferred over a traditional system without analysis while presenting more useful information and significantly increasing the agreement over therapists evaluation from 0.6600 to 0.7108 F1-scores ($p <0.05$). We discuss the importance of presenting contextually relevant and salient information and adaptation to develop a human and machine collaborative decision making system.
Fatigue is a broad, multifactorial concept that includes the subjective perception of reduced physical and mental energy levels. It is also one of the key factors that strongly affect patients health-related quality of life. To date, most fatigue assessment methods were based on self-reporting, which may suffer from many factors such as recall bias. To address this issue, in this work, we recorded multi-modal physiological data (including ECG, accelerometer, skin temperature and respiratory rate, as well as demographic information such as age, BMI) in free-living environments and developed automated fatigue assessment models. Specifically, we extracted features from each modality and employed the random forest-based mixed-effects models, which can take advantage of the demographic information for improved performance. We conducted experiments on our collected dataset, and very promising preliminary results were achieved. Our results suggested ECG played an important role in the fatigue assessment tasks.
A smart home is grounded on the sensors that endure automation, safety, and structural integration. The security mechanism in digital setup possesses vibrant prominence and the biometric facial recognition system is novel addition to accrue the smart home features. Understanding the implementation of such technology is the outcome of user behavior modeling. However, there is the paucity of empirical research that explains the role of cognitive, functional, and social aspects of end-users acceptance behavior towards biometric facial recognition systems at homes. Therefore, a causal research survey was conducted to comprehend the behavioral intention towards the use of a biometric facial recognition system. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)was implied with Perceived System Quality (PSQ) and Social Influence (SI)to hypothesize the conceptual framework. Data was collected from 475respondents through online questionnaires. Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were employed to analyze the surveyed data. The results showed that all the variables of the proposed framework significantly affected the behavioral intention to use the system. The PSQ appeared as the noteworthy predictor towards biometric facial recognition system usability through regression and sensitivity analyses. A multi-analytical approach towards understanding the technology user behavior will support the efficient decision-making process in Human-centric computing.
Cartograms are map-based data visualizations in which the area of each map region is proportional to an associated numeric data value (e.g., population or gross domestic product). A cartogram is called contiguous if it conforms to this area principle while also keeping neighboring regions connected. Because of their distorted appearance, contiguous cartograms have been criticized as difficult to read. Some authors have suggested that cartograms may be more legible if they are accompanied by interactive features (e.g., animations, linked brushing, or infotips). We conducted an experiment to evaluate this claim. Participants had to perform visual analysis tasks with interactive and noninteractive contiguous cartograms. The task types covered various aspects of cartogram readability, ranging from elementary lookup tasks to synoptic tasks (i.e., tasks in which participants had to summarize high-level differences between two cartograms). Elementary tasks were carried out equally well with and without interactivity. Synoptic tasks, by contrast, were more difficult without interactive features. With access to interactivity, however, most participants answered even synoptic questions correctly. In a subsequent survey, participants rated the interactive features as easy to use and helpful. Our study suggests that interactivity has the potential to make contiguous cartograms accessible even for those readers who are unfamiliar with interactive computer graphics or do not have a prior affinity to working with maps. Among the interactive features, animations had the strongest positive effect, so we recommend them as a minimum of interactivity when contiguous cartograms are displayed on a computer screen.
