We predict from DFT based electronic structure calculations that a monolayer made up of Carbon and Arsenic atoms, with a chemical composition (CAs3) forms an energetically and dynamically stable system. The optimized geometry of the monolayer is slightly different from the buckled geometric configuration observed for silicene and germanene. The results of electronic structure calculations predict that it is a semi-metal. Interestingly, the electronic band structure of this material possesses a linear dispersion and a Dirac cone at the Fermi level around the high symmetric K point in the reciprocal lattice. Thus, at low energy excitation (up to 105 meV), the charge carriers in this system behave as massless Dirac-Fermions. Detailed analysis of partial density of state suggests that the 2pz orbital of C atoms plays vital role in determining the nature of the states, which has a linear dispersion and hence the Dirac cone, around the Fermi level. Thus, the electronic properties of CAs3 monolayer are similar to those of graphene and other group IV based monolayers. In addition, we have also investigated the influence of mechanical strain on the properties of CAs3 monolayer. The buckled configuration becomes the planar configuration for a tensile strain beyond 18%. Our results indicate that the monolayer possesses linear dispersion in the electronic band structure for a wide range of mechanical strain from -12 to 20%, though the position of Dirac point may not lie exactly at the Fermi level. The linear dispersion disappears for a compressive strain beyond -12% & it is due to the drastic changes in the geometrical environment around C atom. Finally, we wish to point out that CAs3 monolayer belongs to the class of Dirac materials where the behaviour of particles, at low energy excitations, are characterized by the Dirac-like Hamiltonian rather than the Schrodinger Hamiltonian.

We study excitonic effects in two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions with Coulomb interactions by solving the ladder approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter equation. It is found that the general 4-leg vertex has a power law behavior with the exponent going from real to complex as the coupling constant is increased. This change of behavior is manifested in the antisymmetric response, which displays power law behavior at small wavevectors reminiscent of a critical state, and a change in this power law from real to complex that is accompanied by poles in the response function for finite size systems, suggesting a phase transition for strong enough interactions. The density-density response is also calculated, for which no critical behavior is found. We demonstrate that exciton correlations enhance the cusp in the irreducible polarizability at $2k_F$, leading to a strong increase in the amplitude of Friedel oscillations around a charged impurity.
Dirac particles have been notoriously difficult to confine. Implementing a curved space Dirac equation solver based on the quantum Lattice Boltzmann method, we show that curvature in a 2-D space can confine a portion of a charged, mass-less Dirac fermion wave-packet. This is equivalent to a finite probability of confining the Dirac fermion within a curved space region. We propose a general power law expression for the probability of confinement with respect to average spatial curvature for the studied geometry.

Dirac point in two-dimensional (2D) materials has been a fascinating subject of research. Recently, it has been theoretically predicted that Dirac point may also be stabilized in 2D magnetic systems. However, it remains a challenge to identify concrete 2D materials which host such magnetic Dirac point. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we propose a stable 2D material, the monolayers TaCoTe$_2$, as an antiferromagnetic (AFM) 2D Dirac material. We show that it has an AFM ground state with an out-of-plane N{e}el vector. It hosts a pair of 2D AFM Dirac points on the Fermi level in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). When the SOC is considered, a small gap is opened at the original Dirac points. Meanwhile, another pair of Dirac points appear on the Brillouin zone boundary below the Fermi level, which are robust under SOC and have a type-II dispersion. Such a type-II AFM Dirac point has not been observed before. We further show that the location of this Dirac point as well as its dispersion type can be controlled by tuning the N{e}el vector orientation.
The recent theoretical prediction and experimental realization of topological insulators (TI) has generated intense interest in this new state of quantum matter. The surface states of a three-dimensional (3D) TI such as Bi_2Te_3, Bi_2Se_3 and Sb_2Te_3 consist of a single massless Dirac cones. Crossing of the two surface state branches with opposite spins in the materials is fully protected by the time reversal (TR) symmetry at the Dirac points, which cannot be destroyed by any TR invariant perturbation. Recent advances in thin-film growth have permitted this unique two-dimensional electron system (2DES) to be probed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The intriguing TR symmetry protected topological states were revealed in STM experiments where the backscattering induced by non-magnetic impurities was forbidden. Here we report the Landau quantization of the topological surface states in Bi_2Se_3 in magnetic field by using STM/STS. The direct observation of the discrete Landau levels (LLs) strongly supports the 2D nature of the topological states and gives direct proof of the nondegenerate structure of LLs in TI. We demonstrate the linear dispersion of the massless Dirac fermions by the square-root dependence of LLs on magnetic field. The formation of LLs implies the high mobility of the 2DES, which has been predicted to lead to topological magneto-electric effect of the TI.
We report on the clear evidence of massless Dirac fermions in two-dimensional system based on III-V semiconductors. Using a gated Hall bar made on a three-layer InAs/GaSb/InAs quantum well, we restore the Landau levels fan chart by magnetotransport and unequivocally demonstrate a gapless state in our sample. Measurements of cyclotron resonance at different electron concentrations directly indicate a linear band crossing at the $Gamma$ point of Brillouin zone. Analysis of experimental data within analytical Dirac-like Hamiltonian allows us not only determing velocity $v_F=1.8cdot10^5$ m/s of massless Dirac fermions but also demonstrating significant non-linear dispersion at high energies.
