Using density-functional theory calculations, we investigated the electronic structure and magnetic exchange interactions of the ordered 3d-5d double perovskite Sr2FeOsO6, which has recently drawn attention for interesting antiferromagnetic transitions. Our study reveals the vital role played by long-range magnetic exchange interactions in this compound. The competition between the ferromagnetic nearest neighbor Os-O-Fe interaction and antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor Os-O-Fe-O-Os interaction induces strong frustration in this system, which explains the lattice distortion and magnetic phase transitions observed in experiments.

Using first-principles density functional calculations, we study the possible phases of CeMnNi$_{4}$ and show that the ground state is ferromagnetic. We observed the hexagonal phase to be lowest in energy whereas experimentally observed cubic phase lies slightly higher in energy. We optimized the structure in both phases and in all different magnetic states to explore the possibility of the structural and magnetic phase transitions at ground state. We do not find any phase transitions between the magnetic and non-magnetic phases. The calculated structural, magnetic properties of cubic phase are in excellent agreement with experiments. Further, we do not observe half metallic behavior in any of the phases. However, the cubic phase does have fewer density of states for down-spin component giving a possibility of forming half metallic phase artificially, introducing vacancies, and disorder in lattice.
We performed a first-principles study of the structural, vibrational, electronic and magnetic properties of NaMnF3 under applied isotropic pressure. We found that NaMnF3 undergoes a reconstructive phase transition at 8 GPa from the Pnma distorted perovskite structure toward the Cmcm post-perovskite structure. This is confirmed by a sudden change of the Mn-F-Mn bondings where the crystal goes from corner shared octahedra in the Pnma phase to edge shared octahedra in the Cmcm phase. The magnetic ordering also changes from a G-type antiferromagnetic ordering in the Pnma phase to a C-type antiferromagnetic ordering in the Cmcm phase. Interestingly, we found that the high-spin d-orbital filling is kept at the phase transition which has never been observed in the known magnetic post-perovskite structures. We also found a highly non-collinear magnetic ordering in the Cmcm post-perovskite phase that drives a large ferromagnetic canting of the spins. We discuss the validity of these results with respect to the U and J parameter of the GGA+U exchange correlation functional used in our study and conclude that large spin canting is a promising property of the post-perovskite fluoride compounds.

Recent experiments reported giant magnetoresistance at room temperature in LaOMnAs. Here a density functional theory calculation is performed to investigate magnetic properties of LaOMnAs. The ground state is found to be the G-type antiferromagnetic order within the $ab$ plane but coupled ferromagnetically between planes, in agreement with recent neutron investigations. The electronic band structures suggest an insulating state which is driven by the particular G-type magnetic order, while a metallic state accompanies the ferromagnetic order. This relation between magnetism and conductance may be helpful to qualitatively understand the giant magnetoresistance effects.
The electronic and magnetic structures of $ {rm ScFe_2} $ and of its dihydride $ {rm ScFe_2H_2} $ are self-consistently calculated within the density functional theory (DFT) using the all electron augmented spherical wave (ASW) method with the local spin density approximation (LSDA) for treating effects of exchange and correlation. The results of the enhancement of the magnetization upon hydrogen insertion are assessed within an analysis of the chemical bonding properties from which we suggest that both hydrogen bond with iron and cell expansion effects play a role in the change of the magnitude of magnetization. In agreement with average experimental findings for both the intermetallic system and its dihydride, the calculated Fermi contact terms $H_{FC}$ of the $^{57}$Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy for hyperfine field, at the two iron sites, exhibit an original inversion for the order of magnitudes upon hydriding.
The temperature dependence of the optical and magnetic properties of CuO were examined by means of hybrid density functional theory calculations. Our work shows that the spin exchange interactions in CuO are neither fully one-dimensional nor fully three-dimensional. The large temperature dependence of the optical band gap and the 63Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance frequency of CuO originate from the combined effect of a strong coupling between the spin order and the electronic structure and the progressive appearance of short-range order with temperature.
