Using first-principles density functional calculations, we study the possible phases of CeMnNi$_{4}$ and show that the ground state is ferromagnetic. We observed the hexagonal phase to be lowest in energy whereas experimentally observed cubic phase lies slightly higher in energy. We optimized the structure in both phases and in all different magnetic states to explore the possibility of the structural and magnetic phase transitions at ground state. We do not find any phase transitions between the magnetic and non-magnetic phases. The calculated structural, magnetic properties of cubic phase are in excellent agreement with experiments. Further, we do not observe half metallic behavior in any of the phases. However, the cubic phase does have fewer density of states for down-spin component giving a possibility of forming half metallic phase artificially, introducing vacancies, and disorder in lattice.

Using density-functional theory calculations, we investigated the electronic structure and magnetic exchange interactions of the ordered 3d-5d double perovskite Sr2FeOsO6, which has recently drawn attention for interesting antiferromagnetic transitions. Our study reveals the vital role played by long-range magnetic exchange interactions in this compound. The competition between the ferromagnetic nearest neighbor Os-O-Fe interaction and antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor Os-O-Fe-O-Os interaction induces strong frustration in this system, which explains the lattice distortion and magnetic phase transitions observed in experiments.
Magnetic insulators are often antiferromagnetic (AFM) and layered AFM compounds usually show low ordering temperature. On the other hand, layered ferromagnetic (FM) insulators with high-TC are very rare although they could be quite useful for spintronic applications. Here, using crystal field level analysis in combination with density functional theory calculations as well as Monte Carlo simulations, we predict that the layered insulator Sr2NiRuO4 would have a strong FM coupling with TC as high as 240 K. The tetragonal crystal field in the Ni-O-Ru square plane stabilizes the S=1/2 Ni+ and S=3/2 Ru3+ states. The unique level ordering and occupation optimize the FM Ni-Ru superexchange interactions in the checkerboard arrangement, thus suggesting Sr2NiRuO4 as an unusual high-TC layered FM insulator. This work highlights the potential of charge-spin-orbital degrees of freedom for stabilizing strong FM coupling in layered oxides.
Mg2NiH4 is a promising hydrogen storage material with fast (de)hydrogenation kinetics. Its hydrogen desorption enthalpy, however, is too large for practical applications. In this paper we study the effects of transition metal doping by first-principles density functional theory calculations. We show that the hydrogen desorption enthalpy can be reduced by ~0.1 eV/H2 if one in eight Ni atoms is replaced by Cu or Fe. Replacing Ni by Co atoms, however, increases the hydrogen desorption enthalpy. We study the thermodynamic stability of the dopants in the hydrogenated and dehydrogenated phases. Doping with Co or Cu leads to marginally stable compounds, whereas doping with Fe leads to an unstable compound. The optical response of Mg2NiH4 is also substantially affected by doping. The optical gap in Mg2NiH4 is ~1.7 eV. Doping with Co, Fe or Cu leads to impurity bands that reduce the optical gap by up to 0.5 eV.

The electronic and structural properties of (i) boron doped graphene sheets, and (ii) the chemisorption processes of hydrogen adatoms on the boron doped graphene sheets have been examined by {it ab initio} total energy calculations.
By means of ab-initio calculations, we have investigated the chemisorption paroperties of ethanol onto segregating binary nanoalloys. We select nanostructures with icosahedral shape of 55 atoms with a Pt outermost layer over a M core with M=Ag,Pd,Ni. With respect to nanofilms with equivalent composition, there is an increse of the ethanol binding energy. This is not merely due to observed shortening of the Pt-O distance but depends on the nanoparticle distortion after ethanol adsorption. This geometrical distortion within the nanoparticle can be interpreted as a radial breathing, which is sensitive to the adsortion site, identified by the O-anchor point and the relative positions of the ethyl group. More interestingly, being core-dependent -larger in Pd@Pt and smaller in Ni@Pt-, it relates to an effective electron transfer from ethanol and the M-core towards the Pt-shell. On the view of this new analysis, Pd@Pt nanoalloys show the most promissing features for ethanol oxidation.
