ovide information on the limits of Frame Semantics (Fillmore 1982, Fillmore1985). Multilingual semantic annotation offers critical input for research on linguistic diversity and recurrent patterns in computational typology. Drawing on results from FrameNet annotation of parallel texts, this paper proposes frame semantic annotation as a new component to complement the state of the art in computational semantic typology.
In this paper, we describe the process of developing a multilayer semantic annotation scheme designed for extracting information from a European Portuguese corpus of news articles, at three levels, temporal, referential and semantic role labelling. T
he novelty of this scheme is the harmonization of parts 1, 4 and 9 of the ISO 24617 Language resource management - Semantic annotation framework. This annotation framework includes a set of entity structures (participants, events, times) and a set of links (temporal, aspectual, subordination, objectal and semantic roles) with several tags and attribute values that ensure adequate semantic and visual representations of news stories.
We aimed to distinguish between them and the other research areas such as information retrieval and data mining. we tried to determine the general structure of such systems which form a part of larger systems that have a mission to answer user querie
s based on the extracted information. we reviewed the different types of these systems, used techniques with them and tried to define the current and future challenges and the consequent research problems.
Finally we tried to discuss the details of the various
implementations of these systems by explaining two platforms Gate and OpenCalais and comparing between their information
extraction systems and discuss the results.
